"Pre-Paid Celluar Phones - Why You Need One"

From all the problems I've had in the past and all of the postings I see on a monthly basis, I thought I would post this here.

I've had the problems of providers calling me back days or even weeks later or when I specifically told them not to call back. You can get your self into trouble this way with your SO. Big trouble.. I've also sweated my SO finding my cel bill and asking questions I didn't want to answer.

Don't call providers from your home number. It's a stupid thing to do and can get you into trouble (blackmail for one).

Don't call providers from work either, for the same reasons.

I also tried the pre-paid calling card route to hide the fact I was calling local numbers. The card will run out of time just when you need it most. In addition, you can get into trouble if you leave the card hanging around.

Pre-paid cards also have the problem (not all of them) that the phone number the provider sees when you call may not be the number that you are dialing from. Because of this, she may not answer. I've seen more than one provider not answer a call because its not a local areacode or exchange, requiring you to leave a message and wait for a call back from her.

Using pay phones suck as well as providers rarely answer their phone when you want them to and pay phones are few and far (and always gross or broke) in between.

The answer, my RB friends.... Pre-paid cellular phones!

I own a Virgin pre-paid cellular phone. I bought it at Target for around $60.00. No credit card is required to activate it, there's no monthly statement mailed to you. You register the phone via the phone itself or the web. Its has voice mail and can surf the web. It’s a better phone, feature wise than my regular cel!

To re-charge it, you can purchase cards from Target and other places for $10.00, $20.00, etc. amounts. Buy the card, type in the number on the card into the phone and re-charge it. The minutes last for more than a year. The per-minute-cost is somewhat expensive, but then again, how many minutes do you need?

A couple of things with the pre-paid phones for guys with SOs

Pay cash for the re-charge card so it doesn't show up on your monthly statement. You don't want you’re SO asking you what you bought at Target last month when you never go to Target. Also, throw the card away after you use it.

Leave it at work or at the very least, turn off the ringer if you bring it in the house. The reasons are obvious.

In summary,

After struggling with the phone problem for over a year, I finally got one and one big headache with this hobby for me was instantly solved!

Good Luck!

I totally agree with you. I have one and love it. There's one thing that I think you mis-stated....
"The minutes last for more than a year."
Actually, you have to put in at least a $20.00 "top-up" every 3 months (90 days) to keep the account active, whether you use up your minutes or not. Still a killer deal in my opinion, for those of us who aren't yapping around the clock on it. About $7.00/month? I can live with that!

I got one of the Virgin pre-paid phones at Walmart for $9.00 and it has served me well.

I got the metro pcs phone instead. With metro pcs you have UNLIMITED minutes in the bay area every month (cost of $38 incl voice mail). You don't receive paper bills, just a text message a few days before the due date. You can make payments in cash at any metro pcs store. I've had mine for almost a year and it works pretty good. Reception is a bit spotty in some places, but generally works well. You can get UNLIMITED nationwide calling for something like $5 more per month. Not fancy but works for what you need.

Another thing which is important to many people is anonymity. You can buy your Metro phone under any name, address, or whatever you want. They don't ask for ID, and don't care.

Metro is now offering another thing which can be real helpful to hobbyists. Its call Wired Plastic. It is a debit Master Card, but it isn't attached to any of your bank accounts. You load it up with money any number of ways (including money orders, and paypal). You then have a Master Card you can use to check into hotels, motels, etc. This tends to go over better than checking in with cash. Now....the Wired Plastic cards are NOT completely anonymous. You have to give them a real name and social security number and address. But they don't, as far as I know, mail you anything after you get the card (in the mail). I don't see why you couldn't use your office address.. Or a friends house. You can check your balance etc on line, and they will also update you via a (free) text message to your Metro phone as to your remaining balance.

This card would seem to be great because there is nothing a SO or wife would ever see (as long as she doesn't see the card itself.). However, you still wouldn't want to leave a hooker to use a room after you were finished with it...because it still is under your real name etc.

Another place to get this cards are at your local 7-Eleven and some gas stations and convenience stores. They will sell you an anonimous prepaid "credit card " that must people buy instead of gift certificates and that acts like a regular visa up to the pre-paid amount.

Granted I have never actually used this card for Hotels but it works great at restaurants and other similar locations.

The best of it is, you will have access to it immediately (no waiting for it to be mailed to you).

Friendly reminder, the room is STILL your responsibility, I know of providers that have asked to keep the room to "work it" all night (a BIG NO! in my book) I also know of friends that spent a nprmal date with some girl they knew and ended up having to pay for extra days or damaged stuff after they hade left.

I have Metro too, but unfortunately the service is not nationwide or statewide. I also have a prepaid cell for when I'm not in my "calling area".

Other than that one drawback (cant go to vegas, reno, la, etc), Metro is one of the best plans out there!

Many more options in 2005: Metro has limited coverage. Compare the rates and frequency of refill required, as well as coverage as all or nearly all pre-paid phones do not require your personal info. Currently Boost(Nextel), Virgin, and T Mobile all are competitive, $20 or $25 gets you 90 days (if you call a lot you will need more). Tracphone very recently lowered their rates to get in the ballpark, you get a whole year for $90 but only 150min with that. Go Phone (Cingular) is slightly higher for minimum users and Cellular One is higher yet. They all need to continually adjust to the market so expect future changes.
I will use few minutes so went with T Mobile. They never ask for your name or any contact info when you set it up. You never get a paper or e-mailed bill, you just check remaining time on your phone and add as needed ($25 gives you up to 90 days). You can delete the log of calls on your phone (incoming or outgoing) in case the phone falls into the hands of your SO.

I've got MetroPCS and it's nice to think "Call the East Coast - Anytime... ". For some strange reason, though, I can't convince my wife to use it, even when calling her family back east. I'm not sure what's up with that... :(

You can get a bill showing the phone numbers called, but you may be able to figure out some way around it. Heck, I'm lucky - I may have a *business* reason to talk to some of your providers... I can't say more before I do some checks, but that would be nice...

"Don't call me a lady!" "My bad." ;O

My only additional suggestion (I didn't see it above) is don't use the batphone to call home either. Anyone nowadays can trace all the calls any cell phone makes simply by paying money to an Internet provider. You don't really want anything OTHER than the provider's number to show up on these searches.

Only use the batphone when you're going into the bat cave.

This is the best idea in my experience...
One additional discretion notice. You should enable the security code in settings for the phone. Power off the phone when not needed. If the phone is found out and it is off it will appear useless. Then you can make up an "I found it..." story.

All great advice,, I would add that I do not list the correct names in the phone. Like Andrew for Ana, and Mitch for Michelle, Jenkins for Jennifer. Just something to jog you memory,, I have the net 10 and it works fine, I never run out of minutes and it holds a charge for a couple of weeks, but I do not have it on all the time. it costs 30 for 300 minutes and 60 days. I like the idea of having all my numbers in a phone rather than written down somewhere.

If you are worried about your SO finding the second phone or accidently leaving it on and ringing at the wrong time then there is an easy solution. Get a dual SIM phone and then you can put both lines into the same phone. Only works if both of your carriers are GSM (ATT, Tmobile, Tracfone) but otherwise its a great anonymous solution.

While using an online service is a cheap way of hiding activity from friends and family, you now risk exposure if LE gains access via your computer or your online provider.
