"Cookies : firewall : privacy software : login issues"

LAST EDITED ON 02-Nov-08 AT 05:59 PM (PST)

This site requires cookies and HTTP_REFERER to work properly.

If you are having trouble:
1. clicking on SEARCH, INBOX, POST, REPLY... returns you to the message board lobby.
2. System keeps asking you to log in. After you login, no error message is given, but you are prompted to log in again.
3. For VIP members using classic interface, the search by reviewer gives a a referer error.

Check your browser for proper cookie and referer handling, click (do NOT copy and paste) on this health check link:

http://forum.myredbook.com/cgi-bin/checkReferer.pl

You should see only SUCCESS messages. If you see any FAILURE messages, you must FIX THEM FIRST or you will not be able to use the site properly.

For HTTP_REFERER failures:

If you have the Symantec Norton Internet Security, Norton Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm, Earthlink AdSubtracter, or a similar "privacy" product that blocks the HTTP_REFERER variable from being passed, you will need to configure them to permit access for this site.
See Symantec service note at bottom of this post for more information.

For COOKIE failures:

Unblock cookies for:
myredbook.com
mypinkbook.com

If you are using Internet Explorer:
select TOOLS -> INTERNET OPTIONS
click PRIVACY TAB
set slider to MEDIUM (or click the DEFAULT button)
click OK

There are many cookie blocking utilities: Symantec Norton products, ZoneAlarm, Google toolbar, yahoo toolbar, and many others. You likely have one or more of these products installed and you must make sure that each one is configured to allow cookies.

Still can't figure out how to get SUCCESS results?

It is likely that you have either not configured your software properly, or have other blockers in place.

1. Completely disable and shut off the software. This will rule out a misconfiguration problem. Redo the test link.

2. If you still get the same error, look for and disable other products that could be causing the issue. Redo the test link each time.

3. If you are using an anonymous proxy server or other proxy server, turn that off and redo the test link.

4. Install and use a different browser, Opera is a good, lightweight choice. This will rule out any toolbar or browser helpers which have been embedded into your IE or default browser.

FireFox http://www.mozilla.com
Opera http://www.opera.com
Safari http://www.apple.com/safari
Chrome http://www.google.com/chrome

5. Once you get a successful test result, go back and reenable the software you disabled one at a time. Redo the test link each time.

Should the test fail, you will know which software is causing the problem. Work to configure that software properly so as to pass the test. Check with the software vendor for any patches or technical support on configuration.

Zone Alarm pro is really bad about that, it blocks EVERYTHING, I couldn't figure out why I kept having to log in everytime I clicked on a link, turned off Zone Alarm and that fixed it.

I have a hardware firewall and am running no firewall software at all. I was having identical problems when I upgraded to Netscape 8.1 (from 7.2 which run perfectly). I passed your checkReferer.pl test with no problems.

I was able to get around the problems by changing the "Current Site Rating" in the Security Center to "I trust this Site."

Happy browsing:
