"Lucky there is no mandatory Tipping at AAMPS?"

I almost always tip something , the service has to be really bad for me to give no tip. I figure I tip for service at a restaurant , I should tip at an AAMP, since the service is sooo.. much more personal.

But after reading this I was thinking it is a good thing for many hobbiests, who refuse to tip on principal, there is no mandatory tipping at AAMPS!

Pleez keep this thread light, we have had too many heated threads in the past about tipping and it just gets old...

Couple busted for not paying tip
The gratuity was mandatory for large parties, but what if the service stinks?
Posted by Karen Datko on Friday, November 20, 2009 1:38 PM
Bizarre story of the week: Two restaurant patrons were arrested on a charge of theft when they refused to pay a $16 mandatory tip that was part of their bill.

College student Leslie Pope told a TV reporter that the service was so bad at the Bethlehem, Pa., establishment that she had to get the table’s silverware and napkins and walk to the bar to refill her soda. An hour after the group of eight ordered chicken fingers and other bar grub, the food arrived.

Bing: Tipping etiquette
The menu says an 18% tip is included in the bill for parties of six or more. The tip on their bill amounted to $16.35 (inexplicably higher than 18%).

NBC Philadelphia reports:

After the $73 bill came, the group paid for food, drinks, and tax but refused to pay the tip. After explaining the bad service to the bartender in charge, Pope claimed he took their money and called police. The couple was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car.
“They cuffed the Pope in Bethlehem,” one Fox TV anchor in Philly remarked.

According to the NBC report, the owner said managers offered to comp the food, but the couple said that didn’t happen. The NBC reporter speculated that the charges will probably be dropped.

Readers who posted comments at various online articles about the situation offered a variety of views -- the most thorough discussion can be found at lehighvalleylive.com -- including:

The couple should have paid the tip -- particularly after police were called.
The manager should have apologized for bad service and moved on. No need to call the cops. “Obviously we would have liked for the patron and the establishment to have worked this out without getting the police involved,” Deputy Police Commissioner Stuart Bedics told NBC.
Mandatory tips are outrageous. A tip is a reward for good service. “I know that many places will add it to the bill on parties over a certain number, but I think that the patrons should also have the right to not pay when there is bad service,” “oldgoat” said in a comment at Newser.
What should have happened here? What do you think?

This is a civil issue unless it states "service charge" in place of gratuity or tip on the menu.

If the couple genuinely felt they were deducting money because services were not rendered or rendered unsatifactory in accordance to the full extent of the written agreement, legally they are fine.

Its actually very surprising any self respecting officer would make this arrest.

The pope will be ok, unless she is a belligerent neanderthal in court.

'Tipping" doesn't always have to be done in the form of $$, often I will bring 'goodies', 'dinners'(having a meal with the RA), multiple hours spending sometime chatting and relaxing. It's been awhile since I actually gave $$ as a tip.

I don't have a problem 'tipping' if the service is good, otherwise forget it. To be arressted, to much....

The idea that someone is required to tip 18% is insane if their

is slow and bad service. The management should be ashamed of them-

selves for calling the police. It would of been much better too have

just let their guests leave without having too pay a tip.

Yes, but it would also set a bad precedent because once that has happened people will start leaving before the food comes and after that some will start leaving before they even ordered.

This whole tipping craze is really bad actually. Bad service should merit less tip. And in large groups if the service is bad the establishment should do the right thing and excuse the tip.

I tip heavy when service is outstanding. I tip very little to nothing when it is bad.

Face it, if it is a service industry then they should give you good service. It the job. They give you shit service and it's on them.

Sorry to sound like an ass, but if the service was bad then the 18% should be taken from their bad servers.

But then again was service really that bad? It's a whole word of mouth thing, but what would be their reasons to lie. They were willing to get arrested for what they believed was bad unfair crap service and standing up for themselves.

I dont get why you guys would tip at the 200dollar AAMPs?
Thats just not warranted.
Its a different story if I run into a gem at a discount place like I did last week. When I came back on another day, I tipped and she upped her service.
It doesnt make sense to do that at a 200-place when its expected.
WTF?

For parties of 6-8 (depending on restaurant policy), a gratuity is added to the bill. Gratuity will be 15-18% and is considered part of the bill. The server is still required to give good service. He/she should in fact give superior service since the tip is guaranteed (servers make 90% of their income from tips). But if service was horrible, they have the right to not pay the added-on gratuity. Call for the manager and explain the situation. The manager should have removed the gratuity from the bill. The police should never have been called. So instead, they (the restaurant) will probably get a lot of bad press which may effect their future business. Everyone loses. The restaurant blew it. I normally tip over 20% but if service was bare minimum maybe 10-15%. For truely horrible service, I would leave a penny.

Usually it seems there is a discount for Gang bangs ?
Or at least that is what they say when advertising!

So in hobbying this logically is very different?

My comments about tipping are from experience from both sides of the deal and are in reference to the OP subject (patrons refused automatic tip for large party when received horrible service).

For hobbying, I don't normally tip at an AAMP. But you can, if you want, give an additional tip for an outstanding performance. The tip would be whatever you want (not based on a percentage). Usually $20-$100. Sometimes, you may get extra special treatment on your next visit. But then you may be trapped into giving her a tip each time you visit her (or you might get the "what, no tip for me today?" look).

Also sounds here like we tip better for food than we do for hobby. However, food stays with us for more than an hour before a good release (between 12 to 24 hours). In our hobby we have just about an hour for a good release, and then were empty.
