It is very sad. At the height of the Vietnam War, as many Americans were killed on US highways each year as Americans were killed in the entire Vietnamese war. Fortunately, fewer people are killed now on the road than at that time. Still, every day there are stories of people killed due to carelessness and inattention. Alcohol plays a role in a high percentage of traffic accidents and deaths.
Due to our constant need to communicate via text and Twitter, more and more drivers are distracted by their cell phones, smart phones and personal assistant devices. Despite the law requiring hands free use of cell phones while driving, it is still a common sight to see people driving and talking while holding cell phones to their ears. I do a lot of driving. A large percentage of inattentive drivers I see are talking on a cell phone held up to their ears. These drivers drive abnormally slow (or sometimes fast), weave, have trouble keeping their vehicles in their lanes and often make sudden stops or turns. They are oblivious to anyone else being on the road.
My favorites, though, are the people who just have to get to where they are going and feel that any speed they drive is acceptable. I have seen drivers put their lives and the lives of others at risk to save literally SECONDS of travel time. Imagine: jeopardizing other people's lives to save a few seconds.
Many are lucky and survive. Then there are those like the people in this video. Crosses and flowers blossom in front of trees on Fair Oaks Boulevard when youths are killed. Tears are shed.
Of course, many think that the laws apply only to others, not to them. Please help everyone understand that the laws are there for everyone's safety and well being.
