A person's IQ will drop 20 points for watching reality TV shows as well as develop a skewed sense of social behavior and ethics.

Don’t know why people still insist on calling them reality show, there scripted and staged more and more with each new season. Reality is for the most part boring to watch, so they need to be creative in finding new ways spice them up for the audiences. That requires preplanning.

That which doesn't kill me, makes me monger.

........ABSOLUTELY FUCKIN HATE THEM!!....

I think it leads in the "dumbing down" of America and contributes to the tabloid, salacious-seeking idiots who love to watch other people's drama rather than paying mind to their own! (guilty pleasures)

I can imagine though plenty of the drama-driven providers who probably love these shows.. I know one provider was seriously entertaining the notion of being on Bad Girls (a show on who can be the biggest drama bitch).

Its actually a VERY sad commentary of where we are.

I find that mostly women watch reality shows and they give their reason as "They make me feel better about myself". Very sad that they need shows where people are showing the worst of themselves to make others feel better about themselves. Sounds like counselling would work better.

Just wanted to clarify, I do NOT watch crazy people on reality shows to feel "better" about myself. I watch them because I want to see a crazy person, I have to go to school almost everyday and spend every other free moment studying. That hour or 2 a week I watch is like going people watching at a mixer. Its fun to see the crazies go crazy on tv and make an ass of themselves.

A close friend who watches these shows- called it "Guilty Pleasures"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guilty_pleasure

A guilty pleasure is something one enjoys and considers pleasurable despite feeling guilt for enjoying it. Often, the "guilt" involved is simply fear of others discovering one's lowbrow or otherwise embarrassing tastes, rather than actual moral guilt. Fashion, music,[1] and food (especially unhealthier foods high in sugar and/or fat) can be examples of guilty pleasures

What I hate the most is when I see a friend or family member that I had previously respected watching them.

Actually, COPS is the longest running reality TV show on the air.

Probably the original reality TV show would be Candid Camera, depending on how you define reality TV.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reality_television

@London: The first ever reality TV show and longest running reality TV show may be two different shows. One show could be the first ever reality TV show without being the longest running reality TV show.

I hate how people continue referring to these glorified game shows as reality shows. There are plenty of reality show on TV worth watching, on channels like Discovery, PBS, and The History Channel - shows that deal with ....well reality.

The one that said its the "dumbing down of america" was right on.

America has a 25% high school dropout rate, highest teen pregnancy rate, highest divorce rate (disposable marriage), highest level of bankruptcies, society thinks an apology is enough for rape or a felony, 1 in 8 receive welfare or food stamps, Snooky alerts(spelling ?) man this is depressing, but reality.

The scary thing is this...

Between Maury Povich and a few other daytime shows and these "Reality Shows"... what I believe happens is the viewers (especially young uneducated viewers) of these shows begin to become desensitized to dysfunctional behavior. In effect, one starts to believe that this behavior is commonplace- NORMAL! They see it EVERYDAY for hours - one show after another!.. re-progamming their reality about what use to be shameful behavior, now becomes "Normal Behavior"!

You get Maury and a few other scandalous daytime shows and then endless hours of Bad Girls and other shows all evening long. Rather than shame and condemn undesirable behavior as a community- we have allowed the Media to re-define the "norms" that generally set the boundaries of a "functional" society.

And its only getting worse... of lowest and most scandalous the "reality TV" personalities end up getting their own shows - so it becomes who can out-do the others in displaying the worst of human behavior.

Among the worst of the worst are the "Real housewives of... (fill in the city), a bunch of botoxed, face and butt lifted, lipoed, vacuous bimbos, all of them who would be living in trailer parks except for being born or married into money.

OTOH, I do have a weakness for two "reality" shows--Top Chef, and Project Runway. And, yes, I am heterosexual all the way. But, I am drawn to creativity and talent. The folks on these shows, as quirky as they may be--especially the fashion designers on Project Runway--have lots of both.
