No surprise really that RB would be mentioned in the media including the following article. But I know for a fact that RB management as well as volunteer moderators are vigilant in keeping this site limited to those 18 and over, as it should be.

Craigslist adult-services sections shut down in U.S.

From staff and wire reports
Posted: 09/04/2010 10:20:59 AM PDT
Updated: 09/04/2010 09:46:29 PM PDT

Craigslist, one of the world's biggest providers of Internet classified advertising, abruptly shut down the "adult services" section of its websites in the United States this weekend, apparently in response to criticism from prosecutors that it had become a tool for prostitution.

But it was unclear whether Craigslist -- an icon of the new media transformation of American society -- had closed the site to placate those critics, or to hit back at them, casting itself as the victim of censorship. On its famously bare-bones websites, the blue-lettered link for adult services was gone. It was replaced with a black box, containing one word: "Censored."

Craigslist's usually outspoken leaders gave no explanation for their move and no signal as to whether it would be permanent. Last year, the site increased the screening of these ads after authorities in New England said a man had killed one woman and attacked two others he'd contacted through Craigslist. On Craigslist sites in other nations, the "erotic" sections remained open.

Critics greeted the change with praise and wariness, saying they wanted to be sure it was closed for good.

"They lack either the will or the wherewithal to effectively screen for prostitution ads. Which is why we (said) to them, 'Shut down the site,' " said Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, one of 18 attorneys general who made that demand in a letter to Craigslist last month. He added, "We hope that their example in doing the right thing will lead others to follow them."

The long-running battle about Craigslist's "adult" or "erotic" ads -- which can be thinly veiled as advertisements for a massage or can contain explicit photos and text -- illustrates the complexity of policing the Internet. On one side is an iconoclastic company defending what it sees as a major virtue of the Web: The ability to create a self-regulating virtual commons. On the other are prosecutors and anti-prostitution activists who say that the anonymity of the online world can be a great vice, making it easier for people to exploit women and children in the real world.

By choosing the word "censored," Craigslist seemed to signal that the battle will continue, said Jason Schultz, a law professor at UC Berkeley.

"Maybe what (Craigslist is) trying to do is raise the other side of the issue, which is that there's serious First Amendment, freedom-of-information issues" on their side, Schultz said. "This seems to me completely adversarial, still."

Katrina Hernandez, administrator for the Family Life Christian Center in San Jose, said she and her fellow church members were thrilled by the news.

"We have many people in our church who have recovered from child molestation and pornography," she said, "and to see these avenues for predators shut down is awesome. Is it a violation of Craigslist's First Amendment rights? I'm looking at it more from a moral standpoint, and to me, the protection of children supersedes everything else. I'm happy Craigslist is doing the right thing."

Silicon Valley tech pundit and Mercury News columnist Larry Magid said that, assuming the shutdown wasn't the job of a hacker, the move by Craigslist shows just how much pressure the site was under to clean up its act. He said political pressure from attorneys general, as well as from some media outlets and other organizations, has been "pretty enormous, and perhaps it finally got to them."

Craigslist is widely loved by its users, said Magid, many of whom "have found jobs, or housing or tenants or sold their cars through the site. So maybe Craigslist figures that it wasn't worth it to spoil all that goodwill because of some cases where people were abusing the service.

"On the other hand, a lot of people out there felt that Craigslist wasn't doing enough to protect children by blocking exploitative advertising," said Magid, who is a board member of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and a member of the Obama administration's Online Safety & Technology Working Group.

E-mails sent Saturday afternoon to Craigslist were not answered. However, on Aug. 24, site spokeswoman Susan MacTavish Best issued a statement that read:

"We strongly support the Attorneys General desire to end trafficking in children and women, through the Internet or by any other means. We hope to work closely with them, as we are with experts at nonprofits and in law enforcement, to prevent misuse of our site in facilitation of trafficking, and to combat such crimes wherever they appear, online or offline."

It's unclear how much Craigslist's decision will help police. One Silicon Valley law-enforcement officer familiar with vice-squad work said Saturday that an even bigger headache for police trying to stop online prostitution and child exploitation is myredbook.com as well as some local alternative newspapers, which prominently feature numerous ads for places such as massage parlors in the back pages.

"My Red Book is a huge vehicle for online prostitution," said the officer, "so our guys work that one and even the back of newspapers. I'm sure they'll be happy Craigslist is getting rid of these ads, but I'm not sure how much difference it'll make."

Craigslist began as an e-mail newsletter in San Francisco in 1995, and grew into a hub for free classified ads that has more than 700 local sites around the world. The company says it has more than 50 million users in the U.S., competing with newspapers for classified ads in their circulation areas.

Most of the site's ads can be placed for free. But "adult" ads cost $10 apiece, and there are enough of them to bring in about $36 million in revenue estimated early this year -- about a third of the company's total -- according to a recent analysis by the Advanced Interactive Media Group.

Both prosecutors and anti-prostitution groups say these ads have become a bazaar for prostitutes and pimps. Instead of taking the risk of meeting customers on the street, the activists say, they can arrange visits in hotel rooms.

Staff writer Patrick May and the Washington Post contributed to this report.

Really Tomcat? Please send me some good news bro.

I could be wrong, but the majority of people here are looking for bareback services and could really give a shit about checking the ID of young providers.

Pitt, I'm not sure why, but I expect more thoughtful commentary from you. You have NO idea what the majority of people here are looking for, or whether they care about checking ID's.

Well Pitt, maybe that is what YOU are looking for here but I'm pretty sure that the majority aren't looking for those services and care about the age of the provider they are with! At least not the people I have talked to on here want either of those.
Red and the Mods do what they can to keep this an "adult" board but every now and then, one sneaks through with a fake ID, etc.

For the grandstanding phrase, I love the way the Silicon Valley LE idiot throws in "child exploitation" along with the online prostitution line. With all the cutbacks, I guess he has to grantstand to get more funding, you know donuts and Starbucks are getting more expensive, plus they need more funding for their 90%+ retirement pensions with full medical that they don't pay into to be able to retire at 50!

I'm not looking for bareback services, Mikey. But you are fully engaged in the RBGFE fuck story. And your attempt to spin it is pretty fucking lame. I've been an advocate of safety.

Just a question, are your reviews accurate, Mikey? You've checked the ID of every "young provider" that you've paid to have sex with you and you've never engaged in bareback services?

We need not fight among ourselves.

“Wherever the real power in a Government lies, there is the danger of oppression. In our Governments, the real power lies in the majority of the Community, and the invasion of private rights is chiefly to be apprehended, not from the acts of Government contrary to the sense of its constituents, but from acts in which the Government is the mere instrument of the major number of the constituents.” James Madison 4th US President

The “moral majority” which is neither is driving the government action on this.

Precisely! And this "moral majority" along with the government is attempting to sway public opinion by deliberately misleading the public with grandiose exaggerations of the extent of the very real problem of "child exploitation" in their crusade against sites with an adult entertainment theme.

RB is about what consenting ADULTS do in private.

The media are complicit as well. Check out this grossly one-sided story, told to us just as the government and the politicians wanted it told.

No free advertising for OSJ in this one, though.

I saw it too. Thankfully she is one of the few lady's that allure us with eye candy but do so in such a way that showing her face is not necessary. Imagine if the news channel showed the screen shot and it was a lady that did show her face. The public and loved ones might have noticed. The internet is one thing, but broadcast television is another.

As far as CL, I never used it for hobbying, just RB, so I am not really affected. It might be a problem now to sort out all the ads on RB that will influx from CL.

CL's closure of adult ads is all over the news.

What gets me are the responses;
these are typical ~from the Washington Post:

"Craigslist does NOT deserve to make money from adult service posters - BUT NOT for the reasons the anti-trafficking groups say.

CL got MAJOR BAD KARMA for the HORRIFIC and discriminatory abuses they subjected the poor adult service posters to for years with the gestapo posting restrictions.

For example - Giving NO WARNING before putting poor women's accounts on hold and not telling women WHY or allowing them a chance to be forgiven. Giving NO WARNING when they just decide to ban you from the site - again NOT giving any reason other than their WHIMS. Discriminating against women posters on the site by only allowing them to post ONE photo when all OTHER CL ads allow 4 photos.

Look - Craigslist was treating adult service posters like TOTAL sh-t whereas ALL OTHER websites for such adult ads - treat the women NORMALLY and don't just abuse them by putting their ads on hold or at least give Warnings or Recommendations FIRST before kicking you OFF the site FOREVER.

YOU GOT WHAT YOU DESERVED CRAIGSLIST - NOW STEP ASIDE AND LET NICE AND NON-ABUSIVE PEOPLE BE IN CHARGE OF ADULT ADS."

"I think that legalizing prostitution would bring down the number of rapes, because at least some of those rapists would probably pay for sex rather than just grabbing someone."

"The first problem is the First Amendment. The second amendment gives a certain group the right to bear firearms which are exponentially more dangerous than sex. Human trafficking will take place whether Craigslist exists or not. Which leads to the next point of the legalization of prostitution. Craigslist is safer than walking the streets looking for a sex worker. What this action does is to put more people in danger by putting prostitution back on the street and it violates the First Amendment."

"It is odd that the awesome power of the United States cannot shut down Wikileaks, but it can shut down the Adult section of Craigslist.

The controversy is being fuelled by the recession. If unemployment were 3%, there would be fewer adults and children prostituting themselves and others."

Wikileaks server is in Sweden.
And the owner(s) is in Australia.
Neither subject to US or State laws, or currently vulnerable to US or State prosecutors.

Both the Craislist servers and owners are in the US.

The redbook servers are somewhere in Canada, and the owners' location is unknown.
