"Any Droid X users?"

I'm thinking of switching to the Droid X when my contract expires in a couple of months.

Do any of you use it as a tethering device for your computer?

All the best,

Don't have a droid x, but am using a nexus one a droid phone. Tethering on that one works well. Not as fast as a landline but good to use on the road. If they still have tethering disabled on the droid, pdanet will do the job.

Thanks for the information, Kartoffel.

I'm currently using a Blackberry that also works well as a tethering device (and, as you said, not as fast as a landline but still fairly quick).

All the best,

I used to have an iphone but the dropouts just bothered me too much...and when I got it they said I could only tether it to an Apple computer but that might have changed by now. But with the antenna issue I stay away from iphones until they get it right. A friend has the droid incredible and she really likes it but i don't know if she uses it as her ip connection. I hear blackberry will come out with a new storm soon...so wait for that it might be just what you want.

My iPhone 3gs works great. But now AT&T is screwing everybody by getting rid of the unlimited data plan and giving you 2gig's instead. Which if your tethering will eat up those 2gig's right away. Just another master plan to get more money out of us.

Thanks brando fan and ledsled.

Yes, the antenna problems have me a bit leery about Iphones, and right now I'm getting unlimited downloads, so the 2G limit doesn't sound good.

Maybe the new products soon to come out will suit me (I just got off some sites that talk about the new Storm 3 set to come out in October? and even a Storm 4 planned for Spring 2011--both with 4G capabilities, improved web browsers, and can act as "hot spots" for multiple internet devices--and something called "LTE" which means you won't have to upgrade to new phones in the future; they'll be able to utilize new OS and other apps/widgets as they come about).

All the best,

i used to have the blackberry tour, but switched to the droid x. i am much happier with this phone than with the blackberry. i also use it for tethering and it works quite well. i would recommend switching to the droid over the blackberry. just a lot more applications available for it. the only problem is battery life!! doesn't last long when on the internet

Kat, ss, and hard,

Thanks for the information.

Kat, is 4G already available in the Central Valley?

And, ss, you mention the battery life: When you plug in the phone to your computer, does the computer recharge the phone's battery? (Mine does right now, so I never have to worry about the phone's battery draining--at least if whatever computer I'm using is plugged into an outlet and not using an internal battery like one of my laptops).

Hard, do you use it for tethering too?

I played with a Droid X at a Verizon store and I have to admit it was incredibly fast--but they wouldn't tether it to one of their laptops (for a variety of reasons) for a demo.

My upgrade date is just over a month away--Blackberry better come out quickly with their new stuff or they might very well lose a long-time customer.

All the best,

latinopoet

Latin- I am not in Central Valley- I am in Cleveland, as in Ohio. And they should be rolling out the 4g soon.

When I plug mine into the computer I don't see any battery drain but then again I don't really see it charging the phone either. I think I fried the battery on the initial charge since I didn't charge it for the recommended 24 hours when I first got it. I only charged it two hours before playing with it

LAST EDITED ON 04-Sep-10 AT 04:44 AM (PST)

Since the lithium batteries came out they say it's no longer necessary to charge them 24 hrs. I've had the Droid Eris about a year (chose it over motorola cuz i liked the little ball/mouse) and still haven't touched on it's full potential. It's no secret Verizon backs tethering on there phones far more than at&t, hence the shutting down of netshare way back when. I'm looking hard at the new Droid as well but soon as you get one you know an even better one will come out right behind it. one of the main things is the card as they do differ quite a bit. I was going to upgrade to a 16g card but the real good ones were more than the dam phone ! I use the paid pdanet version ($18 bucks one time fee ) & it's great.

Mister Lixter

ps. ED, iphones are pretty bad ass aswell to bad there service sucks ! lol
