"Craigslist Adult Section.... how long will it last?"

I was watching AndersonCooper tonight and many nonprofits and others are working to bring down the adult section of craigslist because there have been many connections to young sex trafficking..

Opinions??

Thank you for opportunity to speak on this.

I admire CN for holding out and persisting against this onslaught of State AGs, a VERY motley crew of ambitious pols with sharp elbows and minimal scruples. And much too much power. Who try to find a vehicle to higher office by demonizing prominent folks and then attacking them. Think Spitzer. Was he not involved in previous "action".

Hypocrites all.

I respect the law. I disrespect state AGs.

Concerning these "connections" - i dont believe "many". What is the source for "many". Approximately what is the number, how many is "many". Yeah, some will say "one is too many". BS. Some, probably. In my view not sufficient cause to abridge A#1.

Right solution for trafficking is to legalize sex working, sensibly regulate it, shine light in those dark corners. Shutting down CL adult just grows ( slighly ) other venues. So long as adults want illicit sex, there will be venues.

Same thing for drugs, legalize it. But thats a whole other story.

Prohibition Redux.

Personal opinions aside, I suspect it's just a matter of time before CraigsList's adult ads are shut down for good.

Why..and who can force it?

Hooker ads are in newspapers every day..and nobody cares (or can touch them either).

Its an election year...its cheaper to point to the ads on CL, than to accept that they're EASY TO FIND THERE, and prosecute the people in them.

I agree with you bilbaox. I'm glad to see that Craigslist is finally fighting back against these hypocrites and defending their first amendment rights to publish classified ads.

It's time to turn the table on these grandstanders and make protests against their positions in feedback to the mainstream media. Support the non-profits such as EPIC, ACLU, and others that fight to retain our rights, and speak out against these grandstanding politicians, and drop support for the non-profits that are attacking Craigslist.

I hope that Craigslist stands by their guns and defends their rights. This is a tempest in a teapot and will eventually go away if Craigslist just sticks by their guns. They have the law and a large part of the public on their side if they stick by their principles.

Craigslist isn't fighting back so much on principle but that their biggest source of revenue will evaporate if the adult ads are shut down.

I rarely post on there because I don't want my phone buzzing 24/7, spending hours weeding through all the creepy callers, etc.

All of my clients from CL postings have been RB gentlemen that I could research and/or had really good conversations with to establish a level of trust.

About half of the men that call as a result of CL postings can barely speak English.

I won't see clients who can't speak/understand good English (I've had many who put someone else on the phone to translate for them)because I cannot properly communicate my boundaries.

You also can't put any rates or very much information in your ad at all so nearly every caller is asking all kinds of questions I won't answer.

However,

There ARE thousands and thousands of providers across the nation where CL clients make up the bulk of their business.

All of them pay $10 to post and $5 each time they repost.

You cannot edit an ad once it's approved (which can be difficult to do - I have the most vanilla adult massage ad on there) but you can repost it as many times as you like after approval is won.

If you want to stay on the first page, you have to repost like crazy.

That's a lotta $$$$ in the CL coffers and I don't think the CL powers-that-be want to see any of that go away anytime soon.

It's always Summer at my place! xoxo

Thats not really true, I have posted on CL, and I put my rates and I word my ad in a way that they DO know it is a sensual massage...

and in fact, I RARELY get a guy who does not speak English call me.... also.... I STILL screen even on CL... most can not provide a reference, but almost ALL will provide my alternate screening... if they want to see me bad enough they do it, and they HAVE done it happily...

also, if you post an ad on CL during the day time it almost COMPLETELY cuts down on any calls after around 5 or 6pm

I do get an occasional call, but I just hit reject and I have it on my voice mail that I do not accept calls after a certain hour, nor do I accept blocked calls... so if they want to speak to me they can leave a message or call me back the next morning..

Anytime I post after say about 3pm, then yes I get calls late into the night, but before that, it is not so much a worry...

also I do not worry about being on the "first page" because there REALLY is not that many women that post on cl every day... really... go count... not compared to rb anyways... on a given day in the ESCORTS section, rb has 200 plus girls posting...

on CL, from 12a-11:59p you might get 180-190 posts in a BUSY day... and about 20 are posts from AMPS, 5-10 from MfM, 15-20 from TfM, and the rest from the other girls... HOWEVER most women post their ad 2x on average.... some do more, I have seen mgirls do 4x even 8x!!! but on average I would say most do 2x.. ( I only post once every few days now, but there have been days where I posted more...) so if you think about it, if there are 180-190 even say 200 posts in a day and most post 2x, thats the SAME 90-100 people posting every day... and again 30-40 of those are not even escorts or women or massage women... so you are looking at about 60-70 other providers you are competing with for ad space, versus the 200 plus on rb....

I do agree RB is easier to screen, but it is no lie that in SACRAMENTO anyways, that there is less competition on CL than on RB... and if you write a very nice, well thought out ad, you stand out among the others, and they can tell you are of a different class..

This is of course just my opinion.. but... I do speak from experience!

I don't know why I've never been able to post rates in my ads without them getting rejected.

I know of a couple other RB ladies who have rates in their ads as well. Maybe you gals got lucky with a more lenient mod.

I always post in the morning (I'm an early bird) and I have no idea why I get so many non-English-speaking fellas that call.

Must be some kind of:
"Let-me-give-ya-some-big-booty-blonde-love-energy"

I send out or something!

lol cute summer... maybe read my ad there? I dunno.. I had 3 up at once, I would update one ad one day, another another, and the third the last day, and rotate them out.. this way I could have 3 different pics.... all say the same thing and all have my rates....
and all 3 were approved... so I dunno ???

I wonder as much as the next provider what works on that place and what doesn't; on CL it all seems so arbitrary.

I never saw your ads; I'm sure they're nice!

I don't look through 'em like I used to.

Ever since my business grew under this pseudonym (apart from the massage collectives) I don't post my ad more than once a month or less for a couple of years now.

I just use the same, classy, vanilla ad showing half my smiling face/fully-clothed with a tiny bit of cleavage -

over and over and over again.

It's always Summer at my place! xoxo

This is interesting. It seems if they are making money off of the ads placed, then aren't they making money off a sexworker (massage or otherwise)? They are benefiting from a person doing sexual acts, right? Then isn't it a form of pimping and pandering?

Just curious.

Interesting point! I dont think so. They aren't selling any people's services. Listing them isn't pandering, IMO.

What about Village Voice listing adult ads. True, gals/guys don't pay VV directly. But sum people buy the paper 4 the ads. So VV profits from them. NYC DA did go after them in the 80s on this point. Ya know I disrespect DAs, AGs.

Many blurry boundaries here.

Then of course there is the elephant in this room ...

it doesn't matter if the craigslist section lives or dies...something else will be created or get bigger because of the CL loss and it will continue in some other form...

if men or women want illegal sex they will get it regardless...

remember...the internet has only been around for a few years...

My Guess:
Cl is a national company with servers stateside, their adult ads time is limited.

The freedom of speech thing is very questionable, think about it would ads for bags of crank be covered under the law not so sure. Yes the state can go after the advertiser but likely a conservative court would say taking these ads is akin to aiding and abetting.

I have said in the past we are in a bit of a dream world thinking even here in the liberal Bayarea that sex work can be accepted by the society at large. IMHO the only way this could happen is that all taint of coercion is removed from the work. A Nevada style system is probably as close as it could ever get and that is not likely. Dont tell dont be in your face and hope the LE priorities in your area are other things are the best cas.

Future, look at the type of people moving up in the political world and dont mistake Tea Party types for libertarians. Big issues such as stem cells, abortion, freedom of religion will easily devolve into moral legislation of all types.

For those of you that doubt this tell your liberal friends (dont dare tell the conservative ones) about your participation in the sex work sub culture and see how they take it.

I stopped using Craigslist months ago. They have screwed up my ads twice with no refund or response from customer service. They are so anal about what you can put in these ads it's ridiculous. At $10 to get it approved and $5 per day to keep it running, they should be kissing MY ass for that garbage advertisement. I hope the section goes away so CL clients will start looking at better sites.
