"Eat Pray Love?"

I saw it recently, and think it's a film which would tend to attract many regulars of this forum.

Before I give my take, how about yours?

Did you read the book before seeing the film? If so, how did it stand up? If not, do you think it held it's own cinema-wise?

(I have not seen the film,BTW).

More often than not, the film quite doesn't capture the full spirit of the book.

Eat pray love is no different. Don't get me wrong. The movie is entertaining. But, I found the book to be much better.

Didn't read the book.

I think it's unfair and actually kinda irrelevant to compare a book to a film. They are very different media, and a film which slavishly emulated a book would be 10 hours long. Though at first blush it seems logical to compare a book to a film, IMO it's a rookie move.

The movie did not meet expectations, and Julia Roberts was not good enough to carry it, especially considering so many other actresses could have done it as well or better. The Italian scenes were trivial fantasy, the other parts were ok. More than most films, this one would definitely appeal somewhat more to female sensibilities than male ones.

It's a pretty film, though, and the supporting actors are terrific, especially Richard Jenkins.

I have to disagree with ya there Oralio. While they are indeed different media & therefore have different values & tools at their disposal to use, there's nothing wrong with comparing them from the starting point of their core themes & plots; of following the path of what they choose to highlight & how. It's fascinating to me to see what one director/actor/writer (etc) chooses to do with the same basic material. In fact it's very valuable to compare what is done with those things in varying media, how each respective writer/director chooses to manipulate his media &/or the work's themes to suit his own visions...

So while this is not a direct comparison necessarily, it's still simply reviewing what different creative people do artistically with the same raw materials. And a movie doesn't have to slavishly emulate a book in order to accurately capture the tones & subtle meanings, to take on the same emotional or intellectual direction, one as the other. I've seen plenty that attempted this dull take & moved so far from the original meanings it was hard to imagine it wasn't done on purpose....

Just sayin'

Point taken.

Just let me never hear you say "the book was better."

That's my point, put more succinctly. It's fine to compare the two from an artistic POV, but to compare them on a qualitative level, it's grossly unfair, sometimes to the book, sometimes to the film.

LAST EDITED ON 01-Sep-10 AT 11:18 AM (PST)

I've had the book on my shelf for months.

Just got Anthony Bourdain's new book "Medium Raw" from a handsome client (yesterday),

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?rlz=1T4ACAW_en___US371&q=anthony+bourdain+books&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=11336971436115472934&ei=wZd-TK2mLpSCsQO2m6yqCw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CDAQ8wIwAA#

I have all my wonderful books in my bookshelf/nightstand next to my bed with a copy of

"Children of the Light (reading it again) - " on top.

I am currently reading all three - back and forth - back and forth...until I fall asleep at night.

I didn't enjoy the movie at all...I didn't get taken in by the main character and her quest to find...???...and she didn't seem to know either. I'm not a fan of chick flicks I'm more of a psychological thriller type of gal

haven't seem the film or read the book, but speaking of the talented cast... Javier Bardem when he was doing the press tour was asked about his being in a "chick flick". Not comprehending the term, he interpreted it to mean he was in a "porno" film. Turning it around quickly, he quipped that perhaps Expendibles in reality is a 'DICK flick'. Yep, kinda...

I'd rather watch Inception 10 more times than sit through a
minute of Eat Pray Love
