Groundshark it is an important movie for local consumption.
What we perceive as cruelty may be part of a cultural norm like bull fighting in Spain (It often is cruel though in a universal sense). The battle to change hearts and minds IMHO has to come from within the culture that accepts it. The whale wars show and featured sea shepherds is good example. Speaking of cultural norm I think Hindus and vegetarians in general would be appalled at our own meat packing houses. Bow hunting is accepted by many (Certainly not all) in our culture too, read a bit about it. We sort of idolize marine mammals but all animals should be treated with some respect.
IMHO if one feels strongly about this lets support these movements in other countries but work more on making sure we aren't hypocrites about it.
I do have to admit when the anti whalers land a stink bomb aboard the Japanese whaling (oops research) ships I smile.
BTW I could not and will not watch any of these but their existence shouldn't be ignored. Tell your reps to vote the budget for more inspectors

Finally I believe (cant find it easily) that a group of Native Americans in Alaska has whale hunts that could be considered similar.
