This truly is a heart warming story.

The title, 'Boy’s Best Friend' Risks Life to Save Owner From Swarm of Bees " says it all.

'Boy’s Best Friend' Risks Life to Save Owner From Swarm of Bees

Published September 02, 2010 | FoxNews.com

Pinky the puppy is being called a hero after she literally jumped to the rescue and saved her best friend, 9-year-old Richie Bragg, after he was attacked by a swarm of bees on Sunday.

"I had an allergic reaction, because I didn't know I was allergic to bees," Richie said.

And little could Pinky have known that she, too, was allergic.

The 18-week-old boxer, who was given to Richie as a gift from his grandmother, jumped on the boy and distracted them as they began to attack.

"They just got onto Pinky and a whole bunch of bees followed her," he said.

Richie ran into his house, but his mom had to close the door on his puppy, who was still surrounded by bees. "She was yelping when she got to the door," said Richie, who suffered only a few stings and whose dad rushed him to the hospital. He has a blood clotting condition and could have been in serious trouble if Pinky hadn't distracted the bees, his parents told Fox 8 News.

Richie's mom rushed Pinky to the Stow Kent Animal Hospital, where veterinarian Dr. Jaime Marietti stayed with the pup for 4-5 hours and removed more than 40 stings. She described Pinky as “nonresponsive,” saying "You couldn't see either of her eyes, she was swollen completely. Her ears were actually swollen and sticking straight out because they were so swollen."

Pinky was having trouble breathing, as well. She did not move as the doctor stuck an IV in her.

"Boxers, especially, tend to be a little bit more allergic to bees; however, she had an anaphylactic reaction," Marietti said. "We were trying to get her through this. She never even looked at us, she never lifted her head up, she didn't pay attention to anything."

Marietti was able to stabilized Pinky, and once her breathing became regulated and her swelling came down, there was no stopping her.

The Bragg Family has left for their Labor Day vacation, and guess who's along for the ride.

"Pinky, you really saved my life!" Richie told his dog.

I'm sorry. I just can't seem to get past this. They shut the door on the puppy. Jeeeeeeze louise has no one ever heard of hose or spray or sheets or something???!!!

They shut the door on the puppy surrounded by stinging bees after she saved the kid's life. They shut the door on her.

I know what so many of you are likely to respond..."she's just a dog, they had to do it or the bees'd be inside, they had to think of the kid"--who only had a few stings mind you, thanks to that puppy they shut outside alone, swarmed by bees-- etc etc etc.

I don't care. They shut the door on the puppy & left her out their in fear & great pain.

I can't get past that & I don't find their story heartwarming.... those people just piss me off.

But thanks for sharing anyway blue thrills () I'm just weird that way!

I echo your sentiments in that I think the family needed to do something other than closing the door on the poor pup. Some folks just don't respond well in unexpected or crisis situations.

As you alluded to ... perhaps hosing the poor pup down with water would have helped in alleviating the number of stings she had to endure.

I found the courage and instinctive nature of the pup to save her guardian and best friend heart warming. There were a couple of articles that suggested that she somehow knew of her guardian's medical condition (allergic to bee stings), and hence acted swiftly and drew the attention of the swarming bees.

What I was most relieved to hear is that Pinky, the pup, is well on her way to an expeditious and full recovery.

Cheers,

Yes it is blue thrills! I love how this pup Buddy did the Lassie thing! *And* how his pal Ben ran back for him without a second thought.
Very cool.

And I didn't mean to imply anything less than heroic about the puppy's actions in other story. She was great & instinctively selfless. The owners actions (in that 1st story) just so infuriated me I couldn't get past it. Maybe especially the fact that they saw absolutely **nothing wrong** with their INACTION--as evidenced by the fact they were willing to crow about the entire thing via media outlets. I would have been so ashamed had I behaved in such a manner to any animal in my care I would never have broadcast such abuse/neglect/cruelty to the world!

I think animals in general give so much more to us then we do to/for them...another reason it pisses me off so much when we withhold the most basic stuff from them.

Ok ok, I'll climb down off my high horse

Thanks for this blue!

I echo your sentiments about the owners in the 1st story.

I am dog lover, and had a great companion for 16 years ... That pooch was a world traveler, full of energy and smart as a whip.

Sometimes, it's so easy for all of us to take the unconditional love of our pets for granted.

Cheers,

Because this story makes me feel like Vada Sultenfuss when Thomas J. Sennett gets his.

The dogs courage is the only "heart warming" part about this story. I agree with you, Ms. Sage.
