Cook up a big pot of boiling water and pour it down the drain. It works on slow drains and is good maintenence even if your drain is acting ok. It doesn't work very well on standing water though, but if you do this often enough you won't have standing water clogs.

I've tried it and it works for me.

It's even better if you pour some bleach in with the hot water.

It can crack kitchen or Bathroom sinks made of that. I always turn on the cold water when dumping pasta or vegi water to avoid this.

Hmmm.. reading "if your drains get clogged" and "using snakes to unclog a drain" in the context of FBSM brought some other image to mind..

I guess my mind is in the gutter..

Hi Layla,

I also learned a great trick, from my Dad. When I've used this trick, it's nearly always worked like a champ:

When your drain is clogged, and you have a garbage disposal, try this: take the back end of a broom, a mop, etc, insert it between one of the disposal blades, and with pressure and vigor, move it back and forth, to budge the blades to move.

It takes a few moments and a little effort, but soon, your drain won't be clogged and your disposal with hum like a song

Be sure to run water with your disposal, for a few moments, to make sure it's working fine.

Big love,
DreuCMT

I am PROBABLY wrong -- but I think Layla is talking about her bath tub? Oil from the massage getting caked in the bath tub drain?

Ah!!! Yes, jay, great catch!

In the case of my bathtub, I've been fortunate that the only time it clogged was when my office building had a pipe break of epic proportions

It's been frustrating, as we've had a few water-main pipes meltdowns, in the last year But thank goodness none of the other meltdowns have affected my bathtub, like the memorable 'PipeGate' episode!

I immediately went out, after the 'PipeGate' episode here, and bought another plunger for my bathtub (thanks Walgreens!), that I've only used that one time, and it will ONLY be used, for my bathtub. I plunged the ugly bathtub clog to completion, thus my bathtub, after a vigorous scrub of comex and bleach, was good as gold again

Big love,
DreuCMT

   Hey Dreu,

Your tip worked!!!! I shoved the back end of a toilet plunger down the drain, moved it back-and-forth and got the garbage disposal blades to rotate. I was not looking forward to spending the weekend under my kitchen sink.

When I'm outside today I'll give a thumbs up towards the sky

I have been to FBSM providers (2 that I can recall) that did not know the shower drain was clogged. Talk about disgusting. Standing in shower water doesn't provide the ambiance I seek.
QC ladies. Check your operation daily and you won't lose the quiet client that never complains he just never returns.

Great tip about the boiling water! However, I would be careful not to mix chlorine bleach with hot water and have it standing for any length of time. It creates trihalomethanes which are toxic to breathe in and are considered to be carcinogenic.I have steadily switched to green products in my practice and my life for the health of myself, my clients and the planet.

You sound like a very resourceful lady! I love hearing your tips. I am glad the coconut oil thing is catchin on, too! Did you ever find the best way to get that out of the sheets?

If you have old biodiesel laying around, don't want to put it in your engine, then pour it down a slow drain instead. It will dissolve just about anything that is sticking to the sides of your pipes-- soap scum, grease, oils, anything-- but won't harm the pipes.

to research whether "unclogging the drain" might be another euphemism, but I guess you're being serious.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Hate to belabor the obvious. I love the Yankee ingenuity embedded in the suggestion of using the broom handle to get the disposal to unlock. Am I the only person who knows that at the bottom side of almost every disposal in the known world is an Allen screw? With an Allen wrench one can achieve the same result much more elegantly. Insert the Allen wrench in the screw and rock back and forth. The Allen screw is attached to the disposal blades.

As for unclogging a bathroom or other drain, here's a suggestion from Joey Green:

"Keep drains open. Pour one-half box of old baking soda down the drain followed by one cup Heinz White Vinegar. When the bubbling stops, run the hot water."

That's exactly what I ALWAYS do xo bd

EDIT: I especially like the earth friendliness of these kindsa old school tips, as opposed to the toxicity of draino type stuff.
