"Submission and Masochism"

I'm curious how you see the relation between submission and masochism, or for that matter between dominance and sadism.

There is the stereotype of the masochistic sub and the sadistic Domme/Dom, but anyone who has been around the BDSM world knows this is simplistic.

So what's a non simplistic way of thinking about this?

For me as a Top/Dom I'm only enthusiastic about sessioning with someone who trusts me. Over time we develop an intuitive sense of just how hard we can play, always fully aware of consent and respect for boundaries. I like being strict; I like being severe - something a casual outside observer might label "sadistic". However, I only enjoy doing this knowing that the person I'm sharing the experience with is as desirous of receiving as I am of giving.

I'm not sure what the clinical definitions are of masochism and sadism, but I tend to think of them as being labels attached by someone on the outside as an observation. I adore the submissives I've played with, and would do nothing to jeopardize their trust. I have it in my mind that a truly sadistic person doesn't necessarily feel concern for that.

Interesting topic.

I'm not sure if you have any "sadism" in you at all based on what you've said. Sadism would mean a pleasure in inflicting pain. It seems you enjoy control and discipline.

This is what I'm asking about. How connected is D/s with S/M? Why does it seem that we expect for the D's to be sadists and the submissive to be masochsts?

A sadistic sub or a masochistic dom/mme are rarely discussed. But maybe they should be.
