"Cat issues, part 2 'How do you make a cat happy indoors?'"

LAST EDITED ON 27-Aug-10 AT 12:00 PM (PST)

Part 1 is in Soapbox.

http://forum.myredbook.com/dcforum2/soapz/9919.html

After my suggestion of making the cat an indoor cat I was asked how do you do that if it is used to being an outdoor cat.
Well, I dunno. My cats have always been indoor ones.
I know it is safer for the cat, there are less cars in your home for example. I know cats live levels so things to climb are good, but I would like people to add sugestions.

Oh yea, cats like board games as well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7i94rBUpaY

I was also asked declaw or not?
Some people think it is cruel to declaw and that is like someone ripping off your fingernails. This is not true at all. A cats claw is conected to the "finger" bone, it is like CUTTING YOUR FINGER OFF AT THE SECOND KNUCKLE!

It is not cruel IT IS FUCKING BARBARIC!

Buy a multi-platformed catree. Its a solid investment. Its both play and their own piece of furniture. They scratch that up instead of your furniture.

Provide an area where your cat can just look out the window. Cats can amuse themselves really easy by just being visually stimulated. My bed and her catree are right next to a window. She can be glued to the window like I'm glued to the TV. Its cute and funny when she gets excited by a bird or bug that just flew by.

Play with your cat. Play with your cat. Play with your cat. At least 5 minutes everyday. I not only do it for her benefi, but mine as well. Its fun for me too. Every cat has differnt prefences in toys. Some like flashy, some noisy/squeaky, ssome bouncy. Some love bubbles, my girl HATES them. Figure out what your cat likes and stock up.

And yes, don't ever declaw your cat!

For a catree you can find great deals on eBay for example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/80-CAT-TREE-CONDO-FURNITURE-SCRATCHING-POST-PET-HOUSE-/150485682148?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2309a547e4

For play time, cats do go nuts over a laser pointer but you really are being a cock tease to them when you use them. They like a tactile pay off. So they are all hunt no capture.
My girl likes ball type toys, anything she can bat really far, ping pong balls thrill her. And the boy likes things he can pick up in his mouth. It is cute to see him wandering around with a fuzzy mouse in his mouth while he looks for a place to put it. I am always finding his toys in open boxes, their food and water bowl, my shoes and my pants pockets. Thats what happens when you don't hang up your jeans, you find a cat spit covered toy when you reach for your keys.

Thank you for that reminder as to why a cat should not get to wander freely.

It is ok to allow a cat to go outside, just not to let them run free outside.
I have extended my fence on my patio and it can not be climbed by my cats. They hang out in the sun sometimes but they do not get to run free. People do not let dogs run free, they find ways to keep them on their property and the same can be done with cats.

I don't know Kallell. Running free makes me happy. I think that the house pet thing/zoo is pretty cruel. It's a feel good thing for you, not really that interesting for the animals.

Are you opposed to all pet ownership?

Just wondering because all pets other than some cats are house pets.

Dogs do not get to run free, they might have a yard but it is fenced, birds, hampsters, turtles, fish. None of them get to run free.

Do you take the PETA type stance that all pet ownership is cruelty and slavery?
If so I understand it but do not agree.

We punish criminals by placing them in a building with locked doors and we don't give them a key.

I'm not a PETA tard Kallell. But the house pet thing is barbaric if you asked me. Most "common household pets" have their sexual organs removed to prevent over population and behavior that is unacceptable to their owners.

Would you be cool if you were confined to your house forever and your balls were chopped off by your "owner"?

I do not think you are a PETA tard, they take even more extreem stances but one of their positions is that "common household pets"
are kept as slaves and treated like prisoners.

But I do not fully understand your view on this, do you think that all dogs and cats should just be free to roam the land?

It sounds cool in a Disney movie way, but it is not realistic.

Yes! But I'm not suggesting a Disney style tear jerking release of house pets into the wild.

It sounds nice, but city streets are not the ideal environment for the domesticated house pet.

I gather that you think no one should have a pet and animals that we have domesticated over the years should be free, sonds nice as well, but it would end badly for all.

I think it's safe to say that we disagree. I think that animals should be left alone to live their lives as god intended.

I am not sure what God intented, we do not believe in each other.

But I think we agree in principle. I certainly agree that no more types of animals should be domesticated and I revel in the stories of a peson keeping a chimp as a pet only to have the chimp turn on him and rip his beanbag off.

But man has domesticed cats and dogs, and we have created a world that is not a safe environment for them. Humans need to be responsible and provide environment for them.

I'm going to completely agree with Kallell here. It just comes down to protecting them and keeping them healthy. Outdoors their life span is cut in half, if not more.

I have an indoor cat who hasn't been out since she was a baby. She was a sick baby when I first came across her, and living rough. Her life is pampered now and she never appears bored, and all her needs are met. She has all her claws and uses her living environment as her jungle. She runs everywhere, sometimes doing flips, etc.. but main thing she is safe. ALL the cats who were out door cats disappeared, during the time when I was determining whether or not to let her out. I lived in apartments and every single one of those cats came up missing in a pretty short period of time.
Not mine... she is staying in and I plan to do the next 20years with her...... She is great, and I'm quite sure she is very happy. Whenever she hears my voice she wags her tail.

11 years ago, I got a little ranch in Newcastle, CA to which I added two French ducks (the ones with the big plumes on their heads) to enjoy the fresh water stream and pond, two goats (to keep back the blackberries), two cats and two German Shepherd dogs.

Three years later, when we moved back down the hill, I had NO ducks, one very traumatized goat, one frazzled cat, and one, crazy, dog left.

I found out that when you live in the country - you don't have outdoor pets - you have "snacks."

I've since moved back to the country.

However -

The only pets I have are two big tanks of beautiful fish.

Visually pleasing, relaxing and much less worry.

It's always Summer at my place! xoxo

Jewels, I would wag my tail too if I had one whenever I hear your voice. Now if I could just get you to wag your tail when you hear my voice.

I have outdoor/indoor cats. They actually prefer indoors becuase every chance they get, they run inside when I open the door and run under my bed, I think they are scared of the outside world. The above picture of the cat hit by a car is what eventually happens to all the cats I have own throughout the years becuase they go outside not knowing the dangers of human activity.

What I am interested in is getting some type of device that attaches to the fence and does not allow my cats to jump over but still remain in my back yard. Does anyone know of such a thing?
