"Bay Area Wine Bars, etc..."

Since I rarely have any free time to go out, I need recommendations from people who appreciate wine and good imported beer (Czech pilsners are a favourite.) I'm usually in the Palo Alto, Stanford area, San Francisco and Berkeley.
The places don't need to be posh or anything, but I'd like to avoid large crowds of drunk people and big screen TVs.

Thanks in advance!

Try Vineyard Gate in Millbrae. Google their website for info on tastings. You might also try a kinda new place in San Mateo called 750. I think it's on Elsworth downtown.
Happy tasting. Maybe I'll see you at one or the other.

Woody ;-}>

In SF, there's a very nice place called First Crush, a few blocks from Union Square, under a Japanese restaurant and a block away from the Hilton. It's a small place, maybe seats 30 or so at capacity?

In SJ, there's a wine bar I can't remember the name of on 1st St., sandwiched between an art gallery and a hookah bar, about a half-block from the Agenda restaurant/nightclub and a block away from the Fairmont.

There's a wine bar/restaurant in Palo Alto on University Avenue, but I can't remember the name nor the exact location, other than it's about a block away from a bookstore (not Borders).

In downtown Palo Alto, just off of University, a fun place devoted to local art, wines & cheeses, some beers. They serve appetizers only, and close at 9.

********
Also Palo Alto, about a half-block from Borders, a wine bar w/ large selection (automated wine bank!), full restaurant, very pretty (European look & feel), ok food.

*********
In "beautiful downtown" Redwood City, a newish wine bar with a nice feel, they regularly have music. Their angle is wines that cost $39 or less, all are rated 90 pts or higher (nothing like defining your market!) Limited appetizer menu.

*****
Farther afield, in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose, a very fun wine & cheese shop with attitude (they have a "cheap date" night once a month of wine tasting and gourmet grilled cheese "sandwiches," I hear it's packed). Some fun boutiques on that same block.

Hi Malka!

The wine bar in Palo Alto is called Vin Vino:

http://www.vinvinowine.com/

It's on California Avenue - easier to park than University Avenue.

They emphasize European wines and have a daily tasting of about 6-8 wines by the glass. Never a drunk or TV to be seen in the place!

I think it's closed on Mondays (?)... you can check the website.

Call me if you go there, cutie!

Enjoy,
JJJ

Vintage Wine Merchants at Santana Row, San Jose, is a wine store with a nice bar area - fits perhaps 10, 15 people. Great selection! DT

I was just at the venovenue. There was a mixed crowd of older and younger people. I had fun chatting it up with a few people around my age.

I was also thinking that the Slanted Door has a lot of variety in terms of drinks. Although, it's a restaurant and always very packed and sometimes people fight just to sit at the bar depending on the day. But, alas when you do sit down, their food is heavenly and the drink selection is fairly vast. http://www.slanteddoor.com/

The wine bar in Palo Alto that I was thinking of is Lavanda Restaurant and Wine Bar, 185 University Ave. Only have been there a few times, but it does seem to attract hotties, and the hostess was also pretty cute!

Met a friend @ Piatti's @ Rivermark on Montague/Agnews the other night. Had some great Italian wines... fairly reasonably per glass too!

There's a very good one on Shattuck south of Vine, next door to Cesar's (may be affiliated with Cesar's - I don't recall its name but I've been there and enjoyed it).

great global selection, pre-set "flights", cheese, bread, olives, etc.

cool modern elegant decor, classy style but mellow staff (no snob factor)

highly recommend

yes, this one is new.

one thing to note, do not do the "card" payment, where you pay a given amount (say 30.00) and then get "tastings" from a machine at different prices based on the wine

issue is the 2 oz tastes are pretty tiny and the fees add up very fast

stick with by the class
