"What areas of SF are not safe ??"

I will be attending a week long meeting at the end of August, and have been doing much reading about providers, locations, and transportation in SF. In looking forward to my visit, it occurred to me that some areas of the city might not be safe to walk through at certain times of the day.

I will be staying at the Pickwick Hotel and attending meetings at the Moscone Center. Also have several ladies that I would like to see and will be using the MUNI to travel to various parts of the city. Powell Street station seems to be the main point that I will be using.

Any advice on areas to avoid, or at least be cautious of, would be greatly appreciated.

What tough time?

I love sex with some kinky men from RB... its a lot of fun for a tranny like me so why not?

I also love sex with women too.

Castro is just a neighborhood to me.. it has good T shirt store for men, good sex toy stores and good pizza. Not really a place for gourmet. But wonderful for people who love creative flower arrangement and fun hardware store.

I hang out with my RB lady friends at Divas, Folsom leather bar and Mission dyke bars.. they are all friendly places for us.

I'd avoid Nordstroms and that whole mall, everyone I know has been either pick pocketed there or had their credit card information stole and subjected to identity theft..

close your eyes and pretend I'm a girl.

Pickwick is at 5th and Mission. It's safe from there to Moscone. If you have issues, try avoid going down Mission btwn. 6th/10th.

Another area of concern might be the Tenderloin, but the TL isn't so much of an issue on violence as it is drugs and skid row. I walked through the TL all the time without an issue.

In general you won't have issues in SF.

apparently, unless u r a German tourist SF is safe.

no, seriously SF is very safe. the TL is no big deal, just sad to c d f*cked up people.

if u r cabbing, do not worry.

the higher crime areas r no place anyone will be doing incall - the Bayshore and the Outer Mission in particular.

Avoid? The Castro has some nice restaurants and has a pretty lively nightlife. Compared to many SF neighborhoods its clean and has some great architecture. Just a beautiful neighborhood. Very safe too. Not much reason to avoid.

To the OP: The area your hotel is in is kinda safe. It can be kinda dirty and grimey. But if you act as if you 'belong', most of the characters will leave you alone.

You should visit the Castro for all the reasons soundwave mentioned above. However, the best reason to visit is there is no chance that you will run into Parkton5. That's worth the trip alone!!

Parkton3 is correct. There are gang bangers there called the Castro Street Posse and their leader is called Big Daddy Kane. This goes unreported in the news. They target unsuspecting hetero business men on business trips, to San Francisco. These gang members carry Anacondas, so they can cold cock you with their meat missle from 12 feet away. They look like Boy George but they are much buffer and with mohawks. Walk past a dark alley in Castro and they GOTCHA! You are out cold.

Next thing you know, you'll wake from your dizzy fog, and left wondering why your pants is unbuttoned and zipped down with your pants halfway down below your butt cheeks...then you'll soon realize your butthole is hurting.

If you do venture in this neighborhood, carry pepper spray...if you even feel a slight touch, spray indiscriminately! A whole lot goes a long way. Parkton3 was only concerned about your well being while touring San Francisco.

I wouldn't walk around Palou and 3rd street ( Bay View) at 2 am if I were you lol. and you may see some action ( not the good kind) ares between O'Farrell and Market. Also 6th between Market and Folsom isn't very pleasant for visitors either.

There is the Western Addition too but you won't visit there anyways.

Mission and Valencia streets are fun and safe now.

BTW if you already have notion that SF is unsafe just stay in Union Square and Marina/ Union Street Area. You will enjoy SF more that way.

Thanks to all for the information. Not really concerned about getting into trouble, but now I have a few areas that I will be cautious about. No sense in taking unnecessary chances. Thanks again.

Obviously you're in a big city so you need to keep your wits about you everywhere, especially late at night, but pretty much anywhere is OK except for housing projects (Sunnydale, Bayview/Hunters Point and a couple of others), and it's unlikely you get anywhere near them mongering.

Well, there you go biged357, pohaku is willing to take ya on a tour to Castro and protect ya from the big bad gangsters there. You have nothing to worry about.

Another clue to determine your surroundings, if you see road bumps on the street, you are not in a good neighborhood.

SF is not like New York or Philly, where are distinctly unsafe neighborhoods, sometimes quite close to desirable locations. It's a very small city and basically safe. Any place within walking distance from your hotel is fine. You may find some unsavory neighborhoods and use your better judgment to get out of there. Your life won't be in danger, but it may be unpleasant.

Because it's a small city, cabs are a great way to get around to places not close to a BART station. You're a cable car ride away from Fisherman's Wharf, something that's fun for visitors. I'm sure the hotel will have a map showing the nearest line.

If you have time for some day trips, you might try Golden Gate part, home of the Exploratorium, Academy of Sciences (with the new rain forest dome) and the deYoung Museum, which is hosting a bunch of French Impressionist paintings.

Bring WARM clothes. At night, SF can get quite cool with damp air, wind and temps in the 60's. They sell a LOT of sweatshirts during the summer.

Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur.

The Exploratorium is awesome but it's not in Golden Gate Park, it's in the Presidio.

Bring warm clothes is the best advice an SF visitor can get!
