"Contractor type question"

I'm hoping someone will know about how much it will cost to move a gas line at my house. I had a major electrical problem and have to dig a trench so pg&e can replace the underground wires/conduit. The pg&e guy then said that the city will make me move my gas line over or someting like that. The job is expensive enough and I have no idea how much I'm looking at for moving a gas line. I will find out early next week, but I'm freaking out about what it might cost me. I don't know ANYTHING about this stuff...Thanks,

Brandee

Ask for a second opinion from a different PG&E employee, preferably a supervisor or manager.

Suggest getting a subscription to angie's list to help vette the trenching contractor.

how did the electrical problem occur - was it your fault? pg&e's fault, or ???

moving a gas line is not trivial, make sure the contractor has good insurance and double-check with your homeowner's insurance if it is your fault to see if there is any coverage

The big question is why do you have move the gas line.

Any job over $500 you need to use a licensed contractor. Otherwise both you & the contractor are in the wrong. You can check with the CSLB to make sure the guy is licensed.

It can be done for way less than $500. Gas lines are easy to run.

I would think the price would be wholly dependent on the type of property (suburbs, urban, rural), and the specific circumstances.

I.E. distance between the supply to the meter, the terrain, obstacles such as driveways, sidewalks, paths, trees, other utilities, etc.

Also, open trenching may not be required (horizontal directional drilling/boring).
