"calling all outlaws"

No, it's not an invitation to crime, fool, it's your Sunday history lesson.

Because on this day, September 5, 1847, Jesse James was born. That's right, 163 years of legend and financial upset in the Wild West.

He was born in Missouri and when he was still in his teens he formed a gang with his brother Frank and a couple of other bad boys. They robbed banks and trains for 12 years and got away with it. He wasn't stopped until Robert Ford, a bounty hunter posing as an accomplice, shot him in the back and killed him in a hotel room in Minnesota.

His body was exhumed in 1995 to make sure it was really him, gross huh.

So that's what I know. Carry on.

Gretchen

Little known factoid: my father's middle name was "James", his best friend, who also happened to be the doctor who delivered me, had the middle name of "Jesse". When I was born, they conspired to have me officially named "Jesse James", that is until my mom found out and threw a conniption fit... they had to destroy the birth certificate and issue a new one...

More to to it than that; ex-confederate; member of Quantrill's Raiders; Lawrence Massacre. American history can be fun.

Yes, he was a slaver and psychopath to the end. He grew up killing Union men as a teenager at the end of the Civil War, got killing in his blood and carried on waging his own war against the north and authority. When you know what he and his kin were really like, it is hard to see why people glorify him.

I guess that all of us here are "outlaws", in that we act outside of the law, but hopefully it just adds to the charm of our respective personalities. I've never condoned illegal behavior that has any element of violence or a crime where there is a victim, but victimless crimes.......they're O.K. in my book and think that it's the laws that need to be changed, not the outlaws. We outlaws just don't agree with our society's rules that tell us how we're supposed to be. I never did want to be stamped out of a cookie cutter mold, so I guess that I'm a cookie gone bad - but not half-baked.

The murder rate per capita in the worst of the old west towns was only about 1 in 100,000 per year, which is thirty times lower than modern-day DC or Oakland and 100 times lower than Ciudad Juarez.

Though he got his ass shot out of Minnesota when the town of Northfield rose up as a militia to teach his gang of murdering thugs a lesson, (something the people of Kansas and Missouri never thought to do apparently) I'm pretty sure he got shot in Missouri.

Oh yeah, this man is not a hero

I'd piss on his grave given the chance.

Right, he was murdered in Missouri. That makes twice in my life I've been wrong about something, if you count spelling errors. LOL.

I'm not sure why he is such a figure of legend. Maybe just because he eluded capture for so long. Also I guess he had some personal charm if he was not shooting at you. But yeah, he was a violent criminal.

Yeah...it perplexes me why this secesh, first-cousin-marrying fucknut is worshipped the way he is.

We're talking about a man who likely dressed as a Union soldier at Centralia, and certainly participated in killing about 23 unarmed Union soldiers there who were all on leave. Not to mention his robbery and murder crime spree to follow.

It's hilarious to me, to see how entertainers, especially, glorify him. You have Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen and Hank Williams, Jr. (among others) singing about him, and uber-dumbfuck Brad Pitt playing him in a hilariously titled movie: "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." Hank's lyrics about him are just as hilarious, likening this piece of shit to Robin Hood. Not one scintilla of evidence that James gave one cent of his ill-gotten gains to the poor (except his poor wife/cousin, maybe).

Sorry, but dressing up as a Union soldier to kill 23 unarmed men, robbing unsuspecting and unarmed bank employees, murdering an unarmed bank employee out of mistaken identity and using pseudonyms to hide from the law all sound way more cowardly than a man who infiltrated the gang and shot the lunatic when it was safest to do so.

Here's the only good picture (IMO) of Jesse:
