"Free thanksgiving meals in the Bay Area ..."

fighting the forces of evil since 1952...

I'll be cooking a turkey on Thanksgiving but some people are not as fortunate or out of work or homeless and can't do so.

Here's a list of places that will be feeding people on Thanksgiving around the Bay.

If you buy $ 25 at Safeway you can buy a turkey for as low as $ 6.99.

Should you be so inclined, perhaps donating a turkey to an organization that gives out food baskets to the needy would be in order this season.

I've done this in the past by going in and buying stuff at one Safeway and getting my turkey and then going to another and donating the 2nd turkey to an organization.

# "Giving Thanks at Thanksgiving" -- 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Nov. 24. Local churches are planning a home-cooked style meal of turkey with all the trimmings for anyone in need of a hot meal on Thanksgiving. The meal will be served at First Lutheran Church, 4000 Concord Blvd., Concord. The church is also collecting new socks in all sizes, new or gently used blankets/sleeping bags, coats, and gloves for distribution after the meal. Donations are accepted 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. weekdays, at First Lutheran Church through Nov. 23. If donations cannot be left during those hours or for details, call 925-270-0984.

Free holiday meals in Oakland and the East Bay
By OaklandSeen.com | Published November 19, 2010

With Oakland’s 17% unemployment rate, there are many local folks that are among the 15 million “food insecure” Americans. That means they don’t know where their next meal is coming from. But there is help available. Here are some details about where to obtain food baskets and holiday meals.

If you or anyone you know will be hungry and alone during the holiday season, please refer them to one of these locations. The Thanksgiving tradition includes the concept of plenty for everyone. Please share this information far and wide.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, Calif. -- The spirit of giving is on display in Alameda County cities today, with various groups distributing or serving up Thanksgiving meals.

In Berkeley, members of the city's Police Department, the Berkeley Boosters Association and the University of California Police Department met at 6 a.m. to assemble 250 food baskets.

Each basket contains a turkey, fresh produce and enough canned and packaged food to serve about eight people. They will be handed out by uniformed Berkeley police and parking officers.

Twenty Berkeley and UC police officers raised about $8,000 for the food baskets earlier this year when they rode more than 200 miles in three days on their bicycles.

The Alameda Food Bank will distribute 500-plus turkeys at its warehouse at 650 W. Ranger Ave. from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

In addition to the turkeys, the food bank will give away stuffing, gravy and 2,500 pounds of produce to eligible families.

The food will be handed out by volunteers from the Alameda Fire Department, Clif Bar and the software company Wind River.

The Oakland Department of Human Services, along with the Community Action Partnership and the Emergency Food Providers Committee, is hosting the 19th annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the Marriott Oakland City Center at 1001 Broadway from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

The event is open to all low-income or homeless families and individuals.

More than 2,500 people were served at the dinner last year.

At 5 p.m., Oakland Raiders players will help serve Thanksgiving meals to youngsters at the Dream Catchers Youth Shelter and Support Center at 422 Jefferson St. in Oakland.

On Wednesday evening, Raiders linebackers will host a Thanksgiving dinner for the residents of Paradise Residential Homes at 136 Valdivia Circle in San Ramon. Paradise Residential Homes is a place for youths who have left foster care.

We've been donating much more lately to the local food banks and charities. People are really hurting out there. Sometimes it's easy to forget or not to see it, but the $$ we blow for an hour of fun is the difference between some people feading their kids for a month or having them go hungry.

Thanks for the info Falkie. You should consider bringing food baskets to Oakland OWS and other entities fighting back against the conservative dream of removing all social safety nets from the most needy among us. The kind of safety nets that have helped you in your times of need.

Thanks Falkie for the nice post, very thoughtful of you

Don't worry about these two and their comments, apparently they're heartless and only have hate to offer this holiday season

Well said ! Never understood why there are people who feel the need to attack others at every occasion, including a nice thread like this one. Create another thread and reference to this if you like ! Too much hate plus too much time in their hands ???

Whatever. Jerry Sandusky might be bringing his neighbors kids cross cookies and hot apple cider today, but that doesn't make him a good guy or a trustworthy messenger. you can't spend 364 days a year posting cartoons equating social safety nets to Nigerian Socialism and then expect a post like this for Thanksgiving will make me want to thank God for your generous largeness.

Nice post Faulkie.

Donating your time helping cook, prepare, serve food, is also needed and even more fulfilling than a donation of food...
