   Craigs List R.I.P.

http://blog.patyuen.com/2010/09/03/craigslist-removes-adult-services-section-at-the-urging-of-attorney-generals-from-17-states/

Craigslist removes Adult Services section at the urging of Attorney Generals from 17 States
Posted on September 3, 2010 by patyuen

On August 24th, Attorney Generals from 17 States in calling on craigslist to immediately remove the Adult Services portion of the site due to continued rampant prostitution advertisements and mounting public outrage. The multi-state letter, to craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster and founder Craig Newmark, contends that craigslist cannot — or will not — adequately screen these ads, so it should stop accepting them altogether and shut down the Adult Services section.

It appears Craiglist is complying with the request with little fanfare or announcement. Users from across the country have been reporting the removal of the section in multiple cities including those in the San Francisco Bay Area even though California was not one of the States who signed the letter. It’s unclear why the site decided to mark the section as censored rather than removing it altogether. Perhaps it is a way for them to make a statement. It is not just censored for non logged in users. Users with accounts will see the same black ‘censored’ label over the previous Adult Services listing.

   disappointing...

Maybe someone should suggest that these attorney generals refrain from wearing seat-belts, because driving is dangerous, and they shouldn't take any actions that would seem to endorse a dangerous activity. Plus, the threat of ejection, dismemberment, and death should serve as incentive to drive carefully.

prostitution, like alcohol(and other drugs...), has been with us since the dawn of civilization, and neither one is just going to magically disappear any time soon. Lots of people, especially the religious sort, have problems with one or the other (frequently both), and seem to expect the world to turn into a magical-happy-unicorn-farm-paradise if they can successfully pound the great evil(s) out of existence. Despite failing at this for thousands of years, they don't seem to be letting up any time soon...

If they are truly concerned about the harm done to humans (not that they are, it just makes it easier for them to demonize anyone who disagrees with them), they would be in favor of decriminalization, and channeling the money/funding away from enforcement and into education and social services.

but then, I guess that's a bit to liberal and socialist for most folks, cause after-all, you aren't really being productive unless you are punishing someone...

<sigh>

Here's the plan- post something in casual encounters that
refers to your ad in, say maybe for instance the Vancouver
Canada "erotic services" section. They're only closing the
U.S. adult section. Think this might work? Get creative.
If need be, change the ads from one city/ country to the next.
As long as you find a way to refer to them and your phone number
is in it it should work.

there are numerous ways around this, but it just makes it more of a pain in the ass for everyone involved...

providers posting in casual encounters will get flagged, actual casual encounter posts will get swamped by provider ads, providers will likely get numerous requests for freebies, and numerous other problems that aren't coming to my inebriated mind right now...

There was a good reason that craigslist had separate ce and as sections, attempting an unofficial (or even official...) merger of the two will just make everything more troublesome (although, it may be the only workable option...)

and just to continue the rant, I'd be willing to bet that most(80%+) of the people involved in the removal of the adult services section would also like to see the casual encounters section eliminated.

Wow, I spend a couple of weeks in the desert and the whole world changes. LOL

If anyone looks through archives from around 2006 or 7 I predicted the demise of CL way back then. It took a bit longer, but I'm not surprised. It has been way to out of hand.

In the "old days" of the Internet the girls who advertised on various sites were quality professionals, then CL arrived along with cell phones and every street girl and her pimp brought their ghetto mentality to Internet dating. That is what ruined it. Too many low lifes. Too many criminals. Too many scumbags. Of both (all sexes). Too many robbers. Too many rapists. And a couple of child exploiters.

So now it's gone. I think maybe it's a good thing. It will drive people to sites like this. It will help quality providers regain the trust and confidence of gentlemen who will be less likely to be taken advantage of.

I think this is a chance for sites like RB to improve the quality of experience. Especially by blocking people using stolen photos, knows "robs" etc. I also think eventually most contact sites are going to become semi-private paid membership "clubs" where everyone is vetted and safe.

I also think this CL thing is going to hurt lower end TS providers more than GG's who have better alternatives for contacts.

But what do I know, I could be totally wrong...

It's not as if Craiglist was deriving a whole lot of income from the Erotic/Adult listings. Actually the hoopla generated created foot traffic for the uninitiated to Craigslist in general. Those people became aware of Craigslist's other sections. Craigslist generates all of its income from Jobs Posting and some select market rental advertising.

What is the name of the other Craigslist type thing that was more friendly? I was lead to it from here a few times, but now I forget. It had a similar layout to CL.

I'm really going to miss it, it served me well for years. Also when I was out of the area it made it easy to find a provider... Damn shame, pot is virtually legal now, but people still freak out over prostitution. Drives me insane!

I don't think Craigslist increased prostitution. It made the police have to work. Citizens would want to know why weren't arresting the listed prostitutes. The process is simple enough, but very time consuming!

Chalk up another victim to unwarranted political intimidation by state attorneys general. This move comes on the heels of a scathing letter sent to Craigslist by seventeen state AGs insinuating that Craigslist is culpable for the “victimization of children.” While the state attorneys general are likely celebrating victory this holiday weekend, all they’ve really done is to stifle free speech online and complicate efforts by law enforcement authorities to go after the real bad guys — you know, the ones who are forcing kids into sex slavery.
These AGs are actively pushing this activity further underground where it will be harder for them to stop it. And they're doing it by focusing in on the highly emotional claims of "child trafficking" on the site -- as if those involved suddenly will stop trafficking if they can't post to Craigslist.
And they say that they won't stop there. These AGs will be going after all web sites and newsprint who advertize adult services.
Here's their lead man Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, one of the AGs who pressed for the change ...............A DEMOCRAT
