"Is it safe to surf this site using a hotel's wireless connection?"

So I got a room with the hotel's wireless connection and was wondering if the hotel can monitor its traffic and know that I am this site doing research? If yes, any consequences or no big deal?

The short answer is yes they can see which site you go to by the IP address.

But you have to remember that someone has to view the log of all the sites that everyone in the hotel goes to. And if they want to know exactly what you are doing at the site, they have to get additional too to sniff out which pages you are going to exactly. This is normally an extra tool that not a lot of hotels have unless the person(s) working there is really bored and/or have a lot of time on their hand.

In general, like the real traffic at hotels. People working there don't have enough time or care enough to figure out what you are doing inside your hotel. Well, unless they are really free or really nosy.

Yes they can tell and NO it's no big deal. This industry pumps quite a bit of $$ into the hotel business model.

Don't use a serious password for this site. None of the traffic, including your authentication info (password), is encrypted, meaning that any other asshole on the same subnet can follow what you're doing with readily available software.

The hotel doesn't care about hobbyists (it's part of the reason they're in business).

WHY I HAD TO CHANGE HOTELS LAST WEEK

Last week I checked into my hotel and was a bit lonely.

I thought, I'll call one of those girls you see advertised in Red Book like escorts and such, so

I found an ad for a girl calling herself Erogonique, a lovely girl, bending over in the photo.

She had all the right curves in all the right places, beautiful long wavy hair, long graceful legs..... Well, you get the picture!

I figured, what the heck, give her a call ...... "Hello," the woman says . God, she sounded sexy.

Afraid I would lose my nerve if I hesitated, I rushed right in. "Hi, I hear you give a great massage and 'Id like you to come to my room and give me one. No, wait, I should be straight with you. I'm in town all alone and what I really want is sex. I want it hard, I want it hot, and I want it now.

Bring implements, toys, rubber, leather, whips, everything you've got in your bag of tricks.

We'll go hot and heavy all night; tie me up, cover me in chocolate syrup and whipped cream, anything and everything! Now, how does that sound?"

"That sounds fantastic," she says, "but you need to press 9 for an outside line."

I know a couple hotel security and a couple front desk agents. These guys will talk smack about you behind your back knowing that you and your "so called girlfriend" are really you and a escort. They can care less.
Us bros. are still paying customers. Especially in this recession the hotel/motel Biz isnt doing good at all. As long as you keep it discreet, no loud noises in the halls and you leave the room as you found it and havent trashed it. They can care less what you do, who you do it with and their "free wireless" is the last thing on their minds.

The only time they get weary is when a girl is having incalls, and numerous men come up and down the stairway and or lobby. If the escort doesnt have any organization skills the last thing we want or mgmt. wants is "johns" hanging around in the hallways or lobby.
Some junkier motels have " no visitors after 10pm rules"

Like the time I visited a cutie at the "oasis" at Franklin and Eddy. I went past the old man at the counter through the automatic sliding door with this blonde chic. we go to the room and it was filled with other girls suit cases. We did the deed and as we were getting dressed her girls came up all paranoid. As she walked me out 4 cops were walking up the stairwell to her room. WE both met "face to face" with 4 cops. Luckily she had some "taco bell" trash in her hands. The lady cop even asked out loud " are these them"? We both kept quiet and kept walking down stairs as the cops continued walking up. I got to the parking lot and the old man told me to stop, and I was like bye. ran to my car and glad the cops werent blocking the driveway exits. Kinda felt bad that she was going to have to make up a story on her own who I was and who they all were.

Yes, it's safe. I work in the hotel wireless industry and the majority of hotels outsource the wireless service to a 3rd party. About the only thing they do is throttle back your bandwith. They definitely don't monitor web traffic. The smaller hotels that offer free wifi pretty much have a setup like you would at home, wifi router and a DSL or cable internet connection. They wouldn't be able to identify who you were anyways since you're just an IP address.

The story about dialing 9 for an outside line made me spit out my coffee on to my desk. That cracked me up. That should be part of a comic's monologue.

NutNBolt: are there any privacy/invasion of privacy legal issues for hotels with the capability to monitor guests' e-mail traffic?

I doubt a hotel can listen to your phone calls legally.

I wouldn't worry about the hotel, they have no vested interest in invading your privacy. In fact quite the opposite. On the other hand, another guest with even modest hacking skills can see all the traffic on the hotel network and perhaps even identify your machine. If you are concerned that someone is out to get YOU, then you may want to consider investing in a wireless 3G card and encrypting your communications.

Why a 3G card? The standard wireless cards won't work with encryption?

If you don't trust the wireless connection, most hotels have a Business Center or internet stations, so just use their computers. Some are completely free for internet usage and printing. The pay stations usually allow you to pay in cash for a prepaid card for total discretion.

Last year I had just installed a new version of ZoneAlarm on my lap top, before checking into a hotel. The program was learning my system, and was reporting any attempts to access it from the outside. I was amazed at how many attempts were being block, several in a row at times. They seemed to be coming from out side the hotels system, so I thought I might be a hacker or hackers looking for credit card information on the hotels network. This is just my experience, but I have seen a lot of what looked to be just probing, in many hotels networks.

When there’s an alternative, I have quit using the wireless in hotels. I use the CAT5 connections in the room whenever it’s possible.

Yes, as long as no under 18 material is passed through. If it disturbs you, go to a nearby coffee shop w/WiFi or a laundrymat next to one.
