They use it to check and see where a provider's pics may have originally come from in the event that they're fake.

TinEye is a moderately useful alternative to waiting for 'dasmith' to call BS on the latest fake photos ad.

[Edit]

Not a stupid question at all, btw.

It's the ads that make TinEye necessary that are stupid.

http://www.TinEye.com is a reverse image locator. Meaning, when you load the image Url into its search, it will find where the image was located from.

If you are using Mozilla's Firefox browser, you can load it into the browser itself, instead of going to the site. Right click (for PC's) and it's there and it does work, if its been added into the TE database

TinEye has some promise, but the problem with it right now is that its database of images is very small. Therefore, with any given picture search, you're not likely to come up with any matches.

One of the most interesting uses I've heard about is that somebody recently debunked a purported photo of a giant snake by using TinEye to locate the original background image, thus proving that the snake had been Photoshopped in.

OK fine; I wasn't trying to start a fight. My own experience has been that my image searches on TinEye yielded no results. I was not, however, using it for "hobby" related purposes.

No big deal.
