"Internet fuels virtual subculture for sex trade, study finds"

Interesting article from Michigan State University

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Internet has spawned a virtual subculture of “johns” who share information electronically about prostitution, potentially making them harder to catch, according to a new study co-authored by a Michigan State University criminologist.

The research by MSU’s Thomas Holt and Kristie Blevins of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte challenges the common perception that sex customers act alone and do not interact for fear of reprisal or scorn. The study appears in the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography.

Holt, assistant professor of criminal justice, said today’s Web-savvy johns use the Internet to solicit prostitutes and to provide each other with warnings of prostitution hot zones and stings, which can hamper the efforts of law enforcement officials.

But the more police become familiar the johns’ Web activities, the more it can help them zero in on the perpetrators, Holt added.

“The growth of these deviant subcultures has made it more difficult for law enforcement,” said Holt, who has helped police devise prostitution stings. “On the other hand, it gives us a new opportunity to use the way the offenders communicate to better target their activities.”

The study analyzed prostitution Web forums in 10 U.S. cities with the highest rates of prostitution arrests: Atlanta; Baltimore; Chicago; Dayton, Ohio; Elizabeth, N.J.; Fort Worth, Texas; Hartford, Conn.; Inglewood, Calif.; Las Vegas; and Memphis, Tenn.

In the Web forums, the johns provide detailed information on the location of sexual services on the streets and indoors, as well as ways to identify specific providers, information on costs and personal experiences with providers.

The open nature of the forums led the johns to carefully disguise their discussions with a unique language, or argot, based largely on code and acronyms. This argot may help johns and sex workers to avoid legal sanctions and any social stigma associated with participating in the sex trade, the researchers said.

The study also said the johns place significant value on the notion that paid sexual encounters are normal and nondeviant. “These Internet communities help these individuals justify their behavior,” Holt said.

In addition, the study found that the johns, in their Internet exchanges, generally perceive prostitutes as commodities rather than people.

I perceive them as people, people with pussies I like to fuck!

One presumes that these "researchers" didn't reach the logical conclusion that prostitution should simply be legalized/de-criminalized in the United States (and not just the state of Nevada). The sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol for consumption used to be illegal in the United States, but Americans eventually realized that it was ultimately a huge waste of effort to try to criminalize basic human nature, and Prohibition was ultimately repealed.

As for "studies" coming out of Michigan State, have you seen their huge unemployment rates, and the generally crappy state economy in Michigan? The dads in that state have good reason to worry that their daughters will end up turning to prostitution as a means to pay their bills.

Personally, I generally perceive prostitutes as hard-working people; but I perceive these sort of time/money-wasting "researchers" as commodities.

I was with a provider friend of mine the other day down in Sacramento (I live in Reno) and we had a bite to eat and then went Halloween costume shopping for her, as she has a party to go to next weekend. After that we stopped in a tobacco shop. There was another female customer in the store probably in her early 40s. We all were talking about vices like smoking—being in a tobacco shop—when out of the blue this other female customer said "You know, the government should just make prostitution legal and tax and regulate it, just like alcohol and tobacco." My provider friend looked at her and said, "I totally agree." I looked at both of them and thankfully I managed to keep a straight face.

My point of this story is that I think there are substantial numbers of people INCLUDING women who feel prostitution, especially when we are not talking about SWs, should be legal. More people than those in government or academia like the authors of this study will admit. You cannot legislate morality. Trying to eliminate prostitution through the criminal justice system is just about as futile as was trying to criminalize alcohol during prohibition or is marijuana today.

I'm a bit surprised too that SF and RB wasn't mentioned but consider the wording of their inclusion data set:

"The study analyzed prostitution Web forums in 10 U.S. cities with the highest rates of prostitution arrests: Atlanta; Baltimore; Chicago; Dayton, Ohio; Elizabeth, N.J.; Fort Worth, Texas; Hartford, Conn.; Inglewood, Calif.; Las Vegas; and Memphis, Tenn."

Perhaps the areas predominantly covered by RB are less likely to operate stings or lead to arrests, or we're just more savvy in discretion versus the other areas? (always thought we were a fairly bright bunch )

These cities are the ones where LE goes after providers hardcore. The Bay Area, either underreported or not as much as we think.

The rest of this article is just preaching to the choir.

NEWSFLASH! Internet helps anonymous people of shared hobbies and interests gather and share information!

I'm always curious how these studies that set out to study obvious things get funding. I do disagree about the commodities statement though, but maybe that's just the people I've interacted with so far.

Notice that this pretentious 3rd-tier wannabee-criminologist is a lowly assistant professor. This academic cockroach is trying to get tenure through publishing that paper.

Someone ought to pull a sting on him. I bet he hasn't been laid in 5 years, if ever.

If prostitution is a criminal activity, then why is it legal in Nevada? Was this study funded by Christian Fundamentalists?

If one were to read the US Constitution carefully and correctly there is no need to justify our behavior. The sexual activities of consenting adults in private are a civil right and a human right endowed by our creator.

Doesn't the 'Oldest profession in the world' ring any bells? Pussy-selling has probably been happening since man first devised trade and payment. (In the cave-man days we probably just took it). It still amazes me that generation after generation continues to try and tell US what is moral or deviant. I agree that prostitution is something that is never going away, no matter how many 'studies' are conducted or how much money is thrown at it. People will always buy sex.

It's amazing how many other countries have it legalized (see link below) and thus of course it's not a crime

Prostitution is LEGAL (with some restrictions that aren't that bad) in Canada, most all of Europe including England, France, Wales, Denmark, etc., most of South America including most of Mexico (often in special zones), Brazil, Israel (Tel Aviv known as the brothel capital of the world), Australia, and many other countries

Canada is a closer example of few legal problems and more equal purchasing power. The typical $CAN200/hr cost for 1 hour of full service with no silly tips expected is a bargain for U.S. customers since this is about $US170. One reason prices are so reasonable compared to the U.S. is there is no legal risk and many more women choose sexwork as a profession for the right reasons and enjoy it. Canada (as in most of the world) has mostly honest sexworkers vs mostly scams, rip offs or much higher priced providers in the U.S. with the huge unmet demand for natural sexuality but fewer women willing to take the legal risks. More women get into sex work for the right reasons as a legitimate choice, when you don't have the legal risks of the U.S. Prostitution has always been legal in Canada, but its limited by the 1850 bawdy house restriction and you can't publicly solicit on a busy street or public area.

Really? I have not notice. People study the obvious and think they discover something earth shattering.

Taxing pussies that is a novel idea, but we have been taxed by pussies since the cavemen.
