"The latest on Go Phones"

My Go Phone crapped out so I need to get a new one - I had it for quite a while. I used it of course as my mongering phone to avoid using my work/personal cell phone.

So, am wondering what you all can chime in on as far as the latest with respect to:

-- Which brands of phone and mobile services are best.

-- What's the best place to keep it so it is handy but of course will not be discovered ( I kept my old one in my office but sometimes when I needed it like on a weekend I was SOL).

-- I recall buying it with cash, and signing up for the service under a fake name so there would be no way to trace the phone or calls made from it back to me. Can that still be done ?

-- Do you use a fake name with providers when you call them from the phone ? Most of my mongering of late has been international, where I dont need to worry about my identity. Seems lately providers want real names of their customers, do screening, and sometimes even want to verify your work place (I absoulutely will not do that, and am reluctant to give a real name).

Thougts please - thanks

If you have a GSM phone from AT&T or T-Mobile, you can just get a prepaid SIM card and use it in an older phone. Personally, I like the T-Mobile prepay plan the best.

Could you be more specific about hobbying like you're going to die tomorrow?

Does this mean withdraw ten grand and go from provider to provider until you can't get it up any more or what?

LMAO,

I was curious about the "hobbying like you're going to die tomorrow?" too.

Damn! If I was gonna die tomorrow, and I will be hobbying, I'm gonna blow lots of benjamins on the top hookers.

Regarding hiding your phone, consider a safe place in your car. Most cars have some places where things can be stashed that only a dedicated search would reveal. Behind the spare tire, a back seat armrest with a compartment, the pocket behind the seat (with some other stuff tucked in above it to slow an accidental discovery), etc. Just make sure that you turn off the ringer anytime you are not using it or expecting a call back. You would need the car anyway if you were off to monger, so look around, I am sure you can find a good spot to hide it.

   You drive your car home.
Consider leaving the phone in an inconspicuous drawer at work, if you have a private, lockable drawer or locker at work. Chances are MUCH slimmer that a spouse or SO or for that matter LE will find it there.

There's also the matter of keeping it charged, which is a problem if it's permanently hidden someplace like a golf bag.

My solution is to keep it at work, off, permanently plugged in, on the floor hidden behind a filing cabinet in my office. Nobody around my office ever sees me using it, so if it were discovered I would have plausible deniability. (Of course it's an anonymous cash transaction, etc.)

The problem I have with the Tracfones is that after 60 or 90 days of being off without topping up, you lose your phone number. I tend to have long dry spells and forget to do this, and later end up needing to get a new phone. Anybody know if there's an (anonymous) way to re-activate the phones?

Paul

Good info regarding the phones gents. As a matter of fact, I have used my golf bag too - not only for my phone, but for my cash as well. As NealDown states, it is probably the last place my SO would bother to look.

Beyond this, any opinions on my last question would also be appreciated. As I stated in the OP, most of my mongering is international where my identity is not a risk. However, I am in a lull now in terms of overseas travel, so I need to resume my domestic hobbying.

I cant take the risk regarding my identity when I am so close to home. Nevertheless, I get these questions from prospective providers in various forms:

-- Can you supply a reference (this is sometimes hard for me to do due to my infrequent local mongering).

-- Can you tell me your real name (For obvious reasons I dont want to do that)

-- Can you give me your work telephone number so I can verify your name (again, as I said in the OP - absoulutely not).

I ask your advice on these how to negotiate through these questions becasue it seems providers are wanting this type of information more and more these days. I can understand that, becasue they need to protect themselves too. However, I will not take the risk of being "outed"

Much obliged in advance for your thoughts/experiences.

I use a Virgin Mobile, picked it up at Target, and see them at Radio Shack, Walmart, some Pharmacies and even Safeway. The reload cards are in the same stores.

I always pay cash, anon and no billing mailed out. Cheap deal $6 a month and a dime a minute for calls.

DO NOT CREATE YOUR OWN VOICEMAIL MESSAGE. If you must have a greeting get another guy you know to record it. Here's why...

If your fishing phone is discovered you can say you found it and forgot about it after you threw it in the car map pocket. If they call the phone they will hear it's not your voice, and that makes your story very convincing!!!!

(edit) I had a provider leave the out going message, and then some other providers backed off when they heard a womans voice! So, don't do that!!

It seems lie having a provider leave the V could work. Done right, you could get a voice message and a provider reference at the same time!!

I use Tracphone and buy the year card all cash transactions at walmart then activate at pay phone I give my zip but when it asks for name/number I just answer "none".

when the year was up I just get another card and activate within 60 days of expiring and you will keep number and any minutes left, I never use all the minutes before time expires.

Keep the phone hidden in car-pouch zip tied under dash or under hood, I have a 110v outlet in car and own an inverter so charge it on long drives.

The message is standard. I might be paranoid but any time tracphone is on I turn off my regular phone so that they are not located together.

In regards to your last question - Use the fake name. If the provider asks for work number, etc, and they didn't say anything about it in their ad, then just say "I'm sorry, I can't provide that information" and move on. There are plenty of providers that don't require that type of screening.

Also, in regards to having a buddy record an "out of office" voice message for you. How are you going to explain that to your buddy? Especially if you don't want anyone but providers know you hobby. Most phones have password locks, so lock it. If the SO finds it, she won't be able to access it anyways.

Virgin Mobile is good. $20 every 90 days minimum. Phones as cheap as $10 at times. I have used one for years with no problems. I keep it in my car along with a car charger and keep the battery topped up by charging it when I drive solo.

Also remember to put a lock code on it. That way, if it is discovered by your S.O. she can't check out your history, and you can play dumb if it discovered--say you found it in some random place and tried to figure out whose it was, but it was locked.

I have to agree on the Virgin Mobile phone. It's the cheapest plan I've found, although you do need to top up every 90 days if you top up in small increments.

The golf bag idea was genius! I wish I had thought of that earlier. I was hiding mine with the tax records. My wife can't balance a check book, so why the hell would she care about tax records. But the golf bag is wayyy more accessible.

Also, I charge my hobby phone before storing and found I have pretty close to a full charge up to 3 months later. I also picked up a car charger so I can boost the charge if necessary.
