I stopped by a CVS store today and noticed a selection of prepaid phones; verizon and tracphone. Any suggestions?

Lots of threads on this. I used to use Virgin now I'm a tracphone user. For 20 bucks you have a hobby phone that works.

I use T-Mobile also - it seems to be the best deal if you buy $100 for 1000 minutes, and the minutes don't expire for a year.

Get a Trac from Target. For $14.99 + $19.99 for a 60 min car you get a nice Samsung phone with 'Double mins for life" meaning your 60min card is actually 120 mins; and an accessory pack - headset, case, car charger and wall charger. Activation is easy and no real personal particulars needed.

For under $40 you will be talking in no time, btw buy it with cash ..dont use your credit card.

good luck

   >Verizon has the best reception?

To some extent, it varies depending on where you are. Overall, most people who have experimented (and also, most people in the industry) agree that Verizon has the best reception.

I've been with most of the companies...and I use MetroPCS for my phone, and Verizon for my laptop. But if travel was big in my life right now, I would go with Verizon for the phone, too.

(Metro has some big advantages....such as UNLIMITED 411 use for $2.00 a month. I believe Verizon currently charges something like $1.49 PER CALL to 411. That saving alone pays for my metro phone every month.)

Agreed AT&T is the worst for quality of phone and replacement. AT&T doesn't give a good deal with minutes.

   T-Mobile prepaid is the cheapest @ .10/minute. The best plan tracphone has is the 400 minute @ $100 with "double-minute" = .125/minute.

If there is a prepaid phone that can beat .10/minute, please post

i picked up the tracphone at walmart. 10 bucks for the phone with the double minute feature. came with wall and car charger and cheap case. The

The phone is all black with no other color on it. its obvious Trac phone knows their customer base. all black makes it easier to stash away.

got the 60 minute card for 20 bucks, with the double minute phone its 120 minutes for 20 bucks, not bad. Paid cash.

been meaning to do this for a while, thanks to Tiger for motivating me.

I am using a T Mobile Prepaid Service. .10cents per min with $100 card. But the best part is, I don't need to use their phone. I am using their Sim card in my 'unlocked' AT&T phone. Whenever I need to make a hobby call, just switch the SIMs. Made this change recently and it's a lot more convenient than having a separate phone. When I tried to buy the Sim Card, the T Mobile shop wanted my address etc, but no such hassle in buying a pre-paid Nokia phone with the Sim for $15 from Wal-Mart. (after $5 discount).

T-Mobile provides 1,000 minutes for $100, which doesn't expire for a full year. Refill it and all the minutes continue to rollover to the next expiration. Tracfone is good as long as you buy the double minutes card. Their refill cards are quite easy to find, I prefer T-Mobile since I see them sold everywhere.

All of them are inexpensive enough (Target or Walmart) to test, so if you don't like one, just sell the phone & sim with minutes on ebay or craigslist...

One thing I would say to the newbie, is pick the first phone well. Once you establish a number with your ATF's, it is a bitch to switch numbers. I have ladies who stopped posting for greater than one year, but who will still call me back to hook-up because they recognize the number.

You don't want to migrate your number because this requires giving out personal information. Pay cash, refill cards with cash. If anyone ever gets busted you don't want any hard link to an org.'s database or providers phone.

Finally, a keyboard comes-in handy. Some of these young gals (18-22)love to text and like if you respond in-kind.

I love the prepaid TracFone. It is cheap, easy to set up, and now they have a decent selection of nice phones.

Don't have an SO or anyone I really need to hide stuff from, but I still use my TracFone for hobbying and a regular phone from T-Mobile for contacting work, family, etc.

firstknight-that was my first exclamation upon hearing of Tiger's debacle..."what this business-saavy bazillionare didn't have the brains to use a hobby phone?!!!! duh."

There's that voicemail recording that's been circulating the news where he left a voicemail for one of his mistress' saying "...my wife has been going thru my phone...please remove your name from the outgoing message..."

doh-doh didn't use a hobby phone.

25. "Straight Talk Prepaid"
In response to message #0

LAST EDITED ON 16-Dec-09 AT 01:25 PM (PST)

I've been using Net10 and been very happy with it, but now that Straight Talk is available in my area, I'm gonna switch as soon as my minutes run out.

Straight Talk. can be found at Walmart or purch online.
Its fairly new and becoming available in wider markets.
Available in two plans:

1. $45/mo = Unlimited talk, text, data & free 411.

2. $30/mo = 1000 minutes & 1000 texts & 30 MB data & free 411.

Net10 is another reasonable plan = .10 cents/minute.

Trac phone is a major rip off if you use alot of minutes because it's .30 cents a minute
AND
if you don't use very many , you have to re-up (add additional minutes) every so often, even if you already have plenty of existing minutes.
