"College 'hostess' at U of TN"

The recent NCAA probe of Univ. of Tenn's use of their "hostesses" for recruiting high school players brought back interesting memories.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/ncaa/12/10/kiffin-violations.ap/index.html

I went to college down in Texas and it was an open secret as to what the "hostess" girls (university students who got paid to play hostess to athletes being recruited to the university) did to entice high school athletes to sign.

As one of the Univ. of Tenn. student athlete said, "they don't come if girls are not pretty & friendly".

I had an athlete friend at college who told me about the length to which our university's "hostesses" went to make him feel welcome and needed when he visited the campus.

I'm just surprised these things are still going on - I thought with the liberalization, the "hostess" programs got phased out at most universities but I guess I'm wrong.

Here's a little article detailing the history of use of hostesses in major college athletic programs for those of you who are not aware of these girls (usually girls).

Know what you mean. At our school, the got around NCAA rules by having some of the rich boosters basically give the girls money for the extra's they did or bought them clothes. One girl who was responsible for some key talents signing on even got car - or so the story goes (it might be an urban legend but several girls I knew back then all said it was true).

When I went on recruiting trips in high school, every school visited had these girls - and the prospect had his selection. Even well known schools with a stellar academic reputation were providing a lot "extras.". Cripes...to be 17 years old again.

I have been aware of these programs and have even witnessed some of the "persuasive tactics" used by some schools. Some Hostess programs went much further than others. Hey power to them, but I felt back then that if I was to make a life alerting decison based on a piece of ass (no matter how pretty), then I have no one to blame but myself if that decison turned out to be wrong. Not to mention any subsequent investigation by the parsasitic NCAA. It actually made more sense for college players to take recruits out to strip club and then got him laid.

Oh puleeze; let's not waste money on this as an investigation.

A college athletic recruiting program without hostesses is like . . .
...a beach without water
...spring break without booze
...a frat party without a beer bong

corned beef is a poor man's pastrami

Yeah, isn't everyone getting laid at campuses all over? This is the only arena where the jocks don't have a big advantage.

Ahh yes...I have *very* fond memories of the "Gator-Getters" at the University of Florida. They were some of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Wonderful recruiting trip for an innocent high school boy ;)

To me the two interesting point of this article were (1) the continuing hypocrisy of NCAA and (2) this is still going on at this day and age. The use of hostesses to recruit student-athletes has been an open secret for a long time and universities as well as NCAA knew about this for a while. For them to suddenly make this an issue is funny. Second, I was mildly surprised that its still going on. When I was going to college back in the 80s & 90s this was pretty wide spread affair, specially down in Texas.

Ditto on what you said. They also will not stop any of it because they don't want too. Just like student athletes that get on the dean's list but seem never to go to class. Or their jobs around campus like turning the automatic sprinklers on. M

This is happeneing all over and there is nothing the NCAA can do, unless schools or boosters are compensating the ladies. There are rogue boosters all over shelling out cash like it is candy, just so they can feel like they are a part of the program.
