"Posting photos of arrested sex customers online (SF Weekly)"

Now, police chief George Gascon is advocating a different tactic to combat prostitution: Posting photographs of arrested sex customers online.

Next he'll want to put people in stocks in the city center and let people throw rocks and vegetables at them. People in power like that disgust me. Fucking Puritan A$$holes. He's probably on the take and has a dozen women on the side that his wife doesn't know about let alone his boy friend he's doing. The difference between the police and the bad guys is the badge.

What a waste of time and resources, especially considering the fact 42% of the voters the last time around were for decriminlization. That is wasted time and resources that could be better used to address issues that actually matter like crimes against persons. It is surprising that this guy hasn't been fired given the political leanings of the city council and the current mayor

Yes, 42% voted that way...but..the target is the street side of the issue, thats much more closely related to quality of life issues for residents and business owners.

Thats what they're working on.

Out of sight, out of mind is, im sure, what those 42% voted for.

The movement needs to recognize that the public opinion problem is on the streets..fix it, and then you can move forward.

While 100% may agree with you, that logic alone wont win you any battles at the polls.

Time to fix what people generally dislike about it all, before you can move on.

That is strange. The first picture posted is Gascon's, and boy does he have a smile on his face!

Also, the SF Weekly states Wichita tried this and it "backfired," a town where Sodomy is still illegal. I thought SF was more liberal thinking than the midwest.

http://www.wichita.gov/CityOffices/Police/FieldServices/North/Prostitution+Page.htm

Sec. 5.68.200. Sodomy.
Any person who commits sodomy is guilty of a misdemeanor.
(a) For purposes of this section, 'sodomy' is oral or anal copulation between persons who are sixteen or more years of age and members of the same sex, or between a person and an animal, or coitus with an animal. Any penetration, however slight, is sufficient to complete the crime of sodomy.
(b) Every person convicted under this section shall be punished by a fine of not more than five hundred dollars, or by confinement for a period of six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
(Ord. No. 37-859; Ord. No. 47-087, § 2, 7-25-06)

The Vacaville Reporter printed an article on 12/24/09, yes, Christmas Eve, naming 2 local business owners, one of them a respected CPA firm owner, married, former chamber pres, and currently on the board of directors of a credit union. Included were the booking photos. If that was done by the local LE to serve as a deterrant to others, that is one heck of a price to pay for the accused.

Innocent until proven beyond a reasonable doubt. I'm wondering how fast the ACLU will jump on a case if this goes through. And maybe an out if you are arrested. Get a jury trial and then get it dismissed because of prior publicity in newspapers imply guilt, how can they find jurors that haven't heard about or seen the images, prejudiced, no fair trial.

Photos of people being arrested is not new and any publicity has little bearing.

If a celeb, for example, is busted for virtually "anything", he's usually on the front page on the National Enquirer the next day and TMZ or some other ridiculous show that evening.

The Judge will instruct that an arrest is not evidence of guilt (I don't have the jury instruction in front of me) and I'm quite sure they can find numerous jurors who have never seen the photos or the article.

Just because something is technically okay doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't something civilly that the city very well could be sued for. And that is why the criminal justice system is oh so much fun

Pretty sure those people who get busted on cops sign releases. I could be wrong but I don't think I am. Unless you are a celebrity or what happens to you is newsworthy, they need to get your permission to use your image on TV.

I assume that the reason for doing this isn't so much moral as it pertains to safety & exploitation. Most SFPD efforts to combat prostitution is directed toward street action and not internet-based hobbying which is what most of us are engaged in. Many women advocate groups have huge issues with street prostitution because of the likelihood that many more of the women are out there not entirely of their own free will. Some are being controlled by pimps and/or have drug habits they need to support. And I assume there are minors/runaways out there also. Those of us who don't participate in the SA scene don't really need to worry about this.

Thats why it'll never gain decriminalization or legality.

Because the non SA world, ignores the SA world.

It's what holds us down.

There are some similar threads in other forums. Doesn't much of this type of enforcment, and the enforcement of laws against prostitution, mostly amount to a hate crime against sexually active adults choosing to live an adult life style?

God bless us, and god save us from the unholy alliance between LE and the right wing religious fanatics they represent--why do we fight religious fanatics in the middle east, but pander to them and put up with them here???

No..because REAL lawyers tried this decades ago...and it didnt float.

Its a commerce issue...and in SA where you're also suggesting this, its a community asking for the enforcement, which is THEIR right to ask for, which THEIR taxes pay for.

What we do is illegal, man up, accept it, and move on. Play safe.

Denying the risk that we choose to undertake, is simply stupid and tilting at windmills.

Thanks for the thoughts my friend, but times change and repeatedly bringing up issues is important when the greater good is being served. My taxes are also being used for this evil purpose, as are yours if you live in SF. And some of the recent polls have suggested that a very substantial number of people do not oppose adults having sex for money (overtly of course, since many relationships with sex included also involve the exchange of gifts, dinner, etc). Good people are being hurt by the enforcement of these laws. Are you familiar with the white paper (position paper) created some years ago under Brown's administration I believe, supporting rather convincingly the decriminalization of prostitution? The current mayor seems to have conveniently forgotten about this so he can pay back some political debts, and perhaps as a public relations stunt following being caught with his pants down with his best friend's wife (ie, needing to look like some kind of crusader to avoid looking like the hypocrite he is--opening up gay marriage, then pursuing a very conservative political agenda, and unable to manage a budget, trying to raise money by giving out tickets etc to generate revenue for the city).

Perhaps REAL lawyers will try this case again, and again if necessary as pursuit of our rights is an issue worth the trouble. A class action suit on behalf of those harassed by LE would be a way to go.

God bless us and protect our rights as Americans, and as I said above, God save us from the unholy alliance between LE and the evil right wing religious fanatics they serve.

In the City of San Francisco? What are you smoking? When will you wake up to the fact that "progressive" has nothing to do with "liberal" and neither does "liberal".

it's all about being smart. i remember when chicago posted pics of "busted johns" on a website. also, i know once you get busted and it's made public, you WILL lose your job. you WILL ruin your relationship/marriage!..you WILL ruin your family life.

its all about covering your tracks. go with reviewed providers or by someone you know that can vouch for you that the provider is safe. use a hobbby phone so they never know your real phone number.

as far as those sites that ask for you name employment etc....that's up in the air because i can always goto those sites and then enter my dickhead boss's name and number since i know these. this isn't a guaranteed way to get busted but more for practical joke purposes.
