"Do you buy a go phone or what?"

I'm concerned about calling providers from my own phone. I tried using skype with Caller id, but it doesn't work. I'm considering getting a gophone or some other pay by the minute phone for this hobby, but I'm not sure if I'm just being overly paranoid. Others?

Go buy a trac phone and pay cash for it as well as the minute cards. If you can't add minutes just through the phone because the system is busy, go to a public library on one of their computers and add the minutes from the card.

If you go to Safeway, they have some virgin mobile and other brands of phones in the giftcard section. Pick one up and pay cash.

That's exactly what I did. Just don't let the thing expire. You have to place a call at least once every 90 (?) days or they release the phone number and you have to go to a T-Mobile store to get a new simm card. (Or just get a new phone.) If you have an SO just keep it turned off and hidden when not in use.

You can also use Google Voice. Use your phone to call the GV number, and the caller ID will be that of GV.

At one time I didn't think it a big deal using my personal phone, after all not married no SO. I've have since gotten a gophone and why, lets just say I told some PO to go fu*k himself, he got my number and put it on various bad guy lists.

With a gophone no ID required, you can easily change the number if you run afoul of some lil shit PO.

no big deal just a learning experience.

I wouldn't use your personal cell phone. Only invites trouble (See Tiger Woods). I got a AT&T Go phone for $15. It works well enough. The only problem I had was activating it. I bought it with cash, went to a local Kinko's to activate it online. Used a fake name, address, etc. It gave me a phone number. I was able to make calls, but the problem was I couldn't receive any. So I bought another Go phone, called the customer service, and they gave me a new number that worked. I then returned the second Go Phone. Not sure why it did what it did. Could have been the fake address. Keep in mind, whatever cell phone service you decide on, you will likely use it sparingly. So don't overdo it on the options.

Man, Red should make all of the hobby phone threads a nailed up at the top of the forum.

Tracphone. 20 bucks gets you a phone and 1 hr of talk time. Pick one up at safeway, target or 7-yo.

If you DO get a tracphone (which I have) then shop for one of their 'specials.' Some of their packages come with a phone which has double minutes for the life of the phone...you buy 450 mins for $80, and you get 900 minutes...lasts a good long time.

Tracphones are cool. Walmart sells a all black (u can tell they made it stealth looking for a reason) motorola flip phone for 9.99, comes with double minutes for the life of the phone.

no camera or bluetooth but for 9 bucks, u cant go wrong. it also has a security feature that locks down the phone so prying eyes could not see anything if they found it.

I have heard alot about google voice but I do not know much about it yet and you need to get an invite to into the beta program to use it

Always thought it was a little strange getting another phone for the hobby...

I understand you want to conceal your phone records from your SO...

BUT, What do you do when she finds the OTHER PHONE?
And what is your excuse?

I always just use my regular phone.
Only though I had was that if LE would check phone records,
but phone records by them self is proof of nothing, and I would
never say anything to them either...

Someday your main phone will ring, and your SO will hear you try to disguise the fact you're talking to a provider (best case) or your SO will answer it and engage the provider a rather explicit conversation about your extramarital activities.

You will regret using your main phone.

First of all, keep the hobby phone somewhere where your SO won't find it. For example, work, trunk of your car. Make sure it's password locked. If for some reason your SO finds it - "wow, forgot all about that, I found it, was going to see if it still worked but the phone has a password". Then throw it away in front of her. Your penalty for her finding it - ypu have to pay for another hobby phone.

That's one reason why I use Google Voice with my regular phone. The caller ID is my GV number, and if called, it goes straight to voice mail - and if I choose I can view the voice mail as text.

I think most of us work in the tech business - so the other phone could be lab gear that we used to test the different mobile carriers in the bay area or traveling and your normal cell phone does not work in that area.

I have a virigin mobile phone I got for $10.00 at Target. You need a yahoo user name, make one up, don't use your own name and when you need to add minutes, buy an extra card and never use your home computer to add those minutes. It takes only 5 minutes, to add, go to Kinko's and use their computers

I got a Tracphone from Target for $20. Double mins for lifetime. When you call the 800 number to activate the phone you can skip lots of personal questions and still can activate the phone. The phone card I bought says good for 3 month yet once the phone got activated the actual expiration date will display and it is for 5 months instead.

I used to use my personal phone, but when I get drunk and into a fight with a ROB I just call 911. It's like "I paid for an hour of your time (not your pussy so it's not prostitution) so now, even if you don't give me 'service' I'm staying here for an hour!". She gets physical with me and I just call 911 instead of 'pounding' her the wrong way.

I did that once with my own phone! Walked out of the Lombard motel just as the black n white drove in. Still wondering if they got to the room. I also walked off with both the girl's phones XD (Don't drink and monger!?)

So now I just use a hobby phone, t-mobile from Target. I haven't done it yet but can't think of a better payback than calling 911 into a ROB's incall.

Nobody else uses verizons pay as you go?

Best coverage.

You get the phone for $25 (for a decent flip phone others are cheaper) and then buy a minute card.

You just call and add minutes from the card via automated system. No live person, no name requests, no fake names. Nothing to "make up" period. No logging in from a library or other computer.

The whole thing takes 2 minutes in the best buy parking lot.
