   The word hooker for describing a prostitute appeared in John Bartlett’s Dictionary of Americanisms of 1859, before the America Civil War, hence Guess #1 and the response to this thread are not correct.

The most likely known answer appears at the end of the video.

Nice catch. In researching the answer, I found websites supporting all three theories. The one you mention seems to be the most credible, simply because of the time line.

Great video!

After watching Ken Burns's documentary Civil War, I've told countless friends about the word origin and General Hooker. Now I'm not so sure anymore since you say the word appeared before the Civil War. Also makes me suspicious of the word origin for "sideburns" from General Burnside who had them, again a story from the documentary.

If there's a place that should know the work origin, myredbook ought to be it! I want to know the definitive story and why the others are false.
