"Swinging Chinatown: The Golden Age of Chinese Nightclubs"

Interesting exhibit starting later this month on the Chinese nightclubs in Chinatown before the Strip Clubs dominated the scene in the 60's.

More info: http://www.sfhistory.org/index.php?pageid=20#swing

"From the late 1930s to the early 1960s, Chinese nightclubs flourished in San Francisco's Chinatown. Clubs like the Chinese Skyroom, the Shangri-La, and the Forbidden City, were the first - and in those days the only - venues for talented Asian performers."

Grandfather told me about those days. Roger's & Hammerstein's Flower Drum Song got the ideal from that era. Like the Jazz in the Fillmore & the Mambo music the Mission during that time was also rolling. San Francisco or bay area was always a little bit ahead of the rest of the country as far as trend setting.

Does anyone remember the hookers who used to work the corner of Clay/Kearney Streets, around the early-mid 80s?

Yes. Swarming around Portsmouth Square, Bars along Grant to Broadway & Holiday Inn. Fond memories of making a selection along Bella Union & the Int'l Hotel. For me it was the mid 70's & most were non-asians there, the asians worked in the shops.

Petite asian lover

Saw a show on PBS (Channel 9) a while back on the World's Fair on Treasure Island. They mentioned the show they had there and interviewed a Chinese American woman who did a topless performance. That was quite special back then. And she had aged gracefully, too.

   azzze.

oh yes, if i remember correctly, many many decades ago, when i was young, this guy chased me at the corner of grant and clay, all because i got a dance first with that hawt asian bar girl at lipo. i almost got my butt kicked by this asian guy. luckily, i ran down the street faster than he, and he was running in circles around me, and could not get his hands on me. i dodged a bullet there.

These clubs were popular in SF and NYC Chinatowns, not unlike finding sistahs in the Cotton Club.
