"Attn: Blackberry Users"

You may already have the ultimate hobby phone and not even know it. I have a Tour from Sprint and have successfully integrated a T-Mobile prepaid sim card as a second line (hobby line). I just bought a cheap T-Mobile prepaid phone from WalMart, took out the chip and inserted it into my BB. It wasn't quite that simple as I had to upgrade my phone os to one above 5.0 for it to dial out successfully. But now I can just select network options, change from 1XEV to GMS/UMTS and within seconds I'm on the T-Mobile network with a different phone number. No data with the prepaid plan but I can make calls and send/receive text messages. While you are on one network the phone appears to be off to the other network and will send calls to VM and hold/forward texts until you switch back over. Now I don't have to worry about stashing a hobby phone and not having it when I need it. I believe it will work on the Storm and even the newer Curves as well either from Sprint or Verizon. The T-Mobile prepaid plan is 10 cents a minute if you buy a $100 card and the minutes are good for one year. Do not try it with an ATT prepaid as they lock their sim chips to the phone you bought it with.

To my knowledge, Sprint is a CDMA phone and T-mobile is GSM. The SIM card switching applies only to GSM phones. Unless your Sprint phone is a dual phone, i.e. both GSM&CDMA, which I did not know Sprint sells those. I ahve switched from Sprint a while back.

>Now I don't have to worry about stashing a hobby phone

But you still need to remember to switch the SIM card back to the original and make sure you stash away the new SIM card in a place that's easy to remember and find.

The Tour is a world phone and will switch back and forth between CDMA and GSM networks on the fly. You never have to remove the T-Mobile sim because the Sprint connection does not require a sim. You just switch in network options from 1XEV to GSM/UMTS. It takes about 5 seconds to switch from one network to the other.

Don't forget to clear your call history so the SO doesn't spot anything.

Yup, Sprint and Verizon sell so-called 'world phones', which have both the CDMA and GSM antennas, and you can just buy a GSM SIM for use outside the US (or in this case, if you want to use it as a hobby phone).

There's also a dual SIM holder that fits into some phones. You toggle betwee the hobby phone and the main one. I haven't used them but they may be suitable for some hobbyists. Google "dual sim adapter" for options.

In asia, it is quite common and easy to procure and some phone even have slots that allow multiple SIM chips at the same time. So you can toggle between phone lines without ever powering down and changing SIMs:

Isn't it a problem if your SO get a hold of the phone, select the "right" network, then get a hold of your hobby phone number? can possibly search based on the number on provider networks? or simply ask why you need a prepaid card in the first place?

Sounds great. I have an ATT Curve (a couple years old) - any reason it wouldn't work on there?

Also, just so I'm clear, I will still need to buy a T-Mobile phone and a $100 card, right? If so, the benefit is to have just one phone so there's not another phone lying around for the SO to ask about and/or to have to remember to bring?

I have been using the Go Phones and T-Mobile for a few years and can easily explain away the "fleet" of phones as associated with work, but it would be convenient to have just the one phone (Blackberry).

Then again, I always bring the phone with me when visiting a provider, in case I need to call again on the walk in (can't find the apartment, etc.), and I'm not so sure I would feel comfortable about taking my Blackberry in with me with all of my contacts, etc. loaded on it....Hmmm.

If you're going to use the same phone for hobby and personal Google voice is a much better option IMHO.

tyner,

I guess you could have the best of both worlds and move the sim chip back into your burner when you don't want to carry your BB. As far as your curve goes, you need to check the specs for your model to make sure it has "Quad-Band: 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900MHz or EDGE networks" capability.

I'd love to hear move about Google Voice, but what I have now works and it's convenient.

Google voice basically the same thing you're doing with the two sim cards.

Basically you get assigned a phone number that gets forwarded to your phone. You can make and receive phone calls and text messages using the service and it's free.

http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html

I just recently got out of a long term relationship and only give out my google voice number to the new girls i meet, so i don't have to worry about the stalker chicks or any of that non-sense it also has a really nice feature in which you can block numbers from calling you or send those numbers straight to voicemail.

I second the notion about Go.ogle Voice. In fact, I have GV numbers for different area codes I frequent (408.650,415, 510)

So with GV, does that mean you use your BB to log in to GV, then make the call from there, so it doesn't show up as being called from your BB?

I'm assuming their caller ID shows your GV number and when they call your GV number it obviously rings on your BB.

This definitely sounds like the way to go, as long as you're not getting calls at strange hours from people you don't want to be called by (and possibly have your SO pick up the phone).

Any naysayers on GV out there? Something I'm overlooking?

What is this? On this board? You have condemned perhaps 90% on this board...

I am not married, but I have a missile-like penis, like many on this board (albeit not too large, unlike the purported self-assessments of many on this board). I contend that missiles, married or not, deserve to be ready to launch. "Fire in the hole".

We are all (missile)men, with the same biological imperative.

With GV, the following will show up on your Verizon bill (my provider)

1. Outbound calls: A GV number (google "calls" you and then turns around and calls the number you want).
2. Inbound calls: the number the caller is using.

So, if you don't want those number to show up on your bill, then GV won't work for you.

I like GV because if it ever doesn't work out with an escort, I don't want my real number ending up on the internet somehow. If they post the GV number, that's not a big deal.

With regard to getting calls at strange hours of the night, you can set GV to send to voice mail.

With my solution of adding a T-Mobile chip to the Blackberry, nothing shows up on my Sprint bill at all. When I'm on the T-Mobile line my Sprint line is basically turned off. It's like having a hobby phone but not having to carry a second phone. There are a couple of things you have to be careful of however. The phone will record your call history and texts, it doesn't really know what line you are on, so you have to make sure you erase that. The other is you have to remember which line your on. I almost called home on the wrong line one day. The display does say T-Mobile when you are on that line but you just have to be aware. If that ever happens my story would be that my phone is dead so borrowing a friends.

I think the chipped Blackberry solution and the Google Voice solution both have strengths. My plan is to have both at some point if I can ever get an invite from Google. If anyone wants to send me one please inbox for my email, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can just buy a google voice invite from ebay for $1.50 at most. That's what I did. Took 2 minutes total from making the bid to getting the invite.
