"Social Networking privacy threat"

   Hi:

The link at the bottom of this post should take you to what I found to be a very interesting threat to our hobby.

If I read this correctly, people who post information about themselves in these forums AND post similar information on Facebook or Myspace run a risk of being outed.

I won't be concerned until the SFPD gives email addresses to each of the cops! Can you believe that they are THAT out of date?

Interesting. I went to that page and then tried out their History Hack page. It was maybe 90% accurate, failing to recognize my recent visits to yahoo.com and msn.com. Note that the original article is from 2006, so this is not a new threat.

Sounds like staying in Privacy Mode while on here is just good practice for a number of reasons.

I'm always amazed by the amount of personal info people give out here on the forums and in the chatroom.
A person with a grudge or LE could gather a lot of info from doing a search on someone's posts.

Social Networking is also becoming a huge threat to an individual's personal information and possibly to their well being. More specifically, there are individuals that share too much about who they are, what they are doing, where they are going, etc. By doing so, they often share too much personal information leading to identity thief, information about their upcoming vacations, the fact that they are leaving the country for a specific period of time and that they will be away from their homes for an extended period. Burglars, scam artist and other crooks often take advantage of this "public" information and have used this information to burglarized an individual's home as a result of getting this "insider" information. Therefore, it is not a good idea to share too much personal information and details about yourself on Facebook, MySpace, and the other social networking sites. Just remember that there are lurkers everyone watching and observing what you say and share on these social networks. As all of you know, kids often post too much information about themselves, their family, etc. BEWARE who is out there reading your "STUFF"!

It is so true that the social networking sites are causing people to divulge too much personal information about themselves. I have run across web sites of people who think they are very discreet in the hobby and think the connection will never be made. Wrong! These sites are only the tip of the iceberg. For only a few bucks you can find out more than you ever wanted to know about an individual. Individual privacy is becoming a thing of the past. My feeling is I only post information that I wouldn't care if my worst enemy knew. As far as being outed ... my worst enemy knows!
