very interesting topic ... starting a new thread as the other one reached max

what if you work from home, use dsl, wireless, and have two computers side by side - the work machine with VPN to work, the other personal machine for browsing etc

does the company network, or the company machine, see your personal machine traffic?

thanks

Thanks for starting a new thread.

Some guys in the original thread discussed using a personal laptop. I know a lot of places that forbid from bringing your personal laptop/netbook on site. And almost every place I've worked at has that policy -- if found out, and it's easy -- it's a black mark in the personnel file possibly leading to dismissal.

Well talk about coincidence. I've been in the habit of browsing RB from work lately (including just yesterday). I was just reading this thread last night so today at work I was deliberating whether I should stop and I held out most of the today. Finally towards the end of the day I was getting bored and broke down and tried to access the site. I was greeted by a page that said the site was banned by the company gateway due to containing nudity!

Damn it, my golden years of browsing for pussy at work are over :(

do anonymous proxy servers work for protecting you at home, or from your ISP? Aren't we getting to a point where everything is recorded somewhere and there's nowhere to hide? Everyone says get a tracphone, but they can be traced, if you registered it on a home computer. All computers keep a log outside the browser settings of sites visited. There is no way to stay completely anonymous.

It's great except for those of us who work in facilities where you can't get a cell signal. Of course, one can always step outside.

I would think the company will be able to track anything going through their server or gateway. Wouldn't matter if using personal laptop or smartphone. The data is going through their server/gateway. They would have to figure out who is at the offending IP address to bust you.

To browse at work, you would have to dial into an "outside" network. Don't forget to turn your screen away so no one can see what you are looking at.

There was a TV news story about some guy at CNN or some financial network who was looking at SI pics on his computer and eveyone can see what he was looking at while they were doing an on camera interview. LOL. That guy got outed on TV worldwide.

buy a verizon mifi card (basically a wireless router that connects to verizons 3g network). disconnect your laptop from the company network, connect to the mifi network and browse to your hearts content... when do, change back... remember to clean up your browser afterwards....

Guys, listen to the IT guys. There are 2 ways you someone can find out what you've been doing:
1. Files stored on your computer. This is cookies and cached pages.
2. Listen to the network traffic. When you look at websites, the info comes in packets. Think of them like letters, but without any envelope to hide the contents. The postman could read the letters and know what's going on, right?

When you use incognito mode or a hard drive cleaner, it handles #1. That's like if you have a letter you don't want anyone to see and you shred it. Gone.

But shredding the letter doesn't do anything if the postman already read it and xeroxed it, right? Same deal with using your company's network. Before you get the web page, your company's network (the router specifically) already saw the webpage, recorded what page you were looking at, and if it looks like porn, notified your IT guys.

If you're a computing professional, there are ways to do it that, if you are using only a little network traffic, will sneak under the radar.

But if you don't know the difference between cookie browsing and network sniffing, don't try it. It would be like a guy who doesn't know the difference between french and greek trying to negotiate a price. They're going to get screwed.

This subject has come up a number of times on RB... If you're at work, don't browse RB, CL Adult, porn sites, etc. IT tracks this stuff along with your emails and such. Yes, there are exceptions like if you are the IT department or it's your own small biz, etc. I know someone that got canned for surfing porn at the large corp where I work. The management couldn't come up with anything else solid, so they had IT check his surfing history and bingo, they found porn sites galore and he was history.

Best thing is to use a 3G card, but be sure to use private mode in your browser (or do a complete history clear after your RB session)and don't store any incriminating files or info on your laptop if it's company owned as they can grab it any time they wish.

Happy surfing!

I read this thread with minor interest, but I only browse from home with the "in private" mode in IE8. Works fine, no cookies, no tracking.

However, I was in for a shock this am. I have a RB account with email, and a yahoo account with email. All the private stuff goes through one of those.

Last night, instead of logging out which is my normal method, I was tired and simply clicked the "X" and closed IE.

This am, I opened IE, clicked to yahoo.com, and my email popped up! Everything I have ever sent or received. Then I clicked myredbook.com and the same thing! There was my inbox.

So, tip 'o day: log out of your email accounts before closing.

would be interested in a fail safe mechanism for this. It's so easy to forget. Or to close the browser window without logging off. and, like you say, just lucky you got to the computer first.

When logging into various accounts, be sure Save Login info or stay logged in, etc is not checked. If you want to be double sure on saved browser info, you can set most browsers to clear all info on exit, usually in the privacy or security settings. Not sure if that will kill the login info or not though, so always be sure to press the logout button...

I'm an I.T. dweeb and at our company, our web filtering server blocks any site deemed inappropriate including redbook. Even if you're working from home and come in through a VPN connection, your activity is being monitored, logged and blocked.

If I’m at work and want to schedule an after work session with a hot little AAMP lady, I use the browser on my cell phone. It's lame and slow, but I can still see the ads, pictures and numbers.

As for home use, I use VMWare or as I call it, my porn machine. SO has no clue what VMware is our how to run it.

And yes, your ISP knows every site you visit. But the way I see it, since I’m no terrorist our child predator, I can care less what they know. If they ever share my browsing habits with anyone without my knowledge, I will sue the living shit out of them and I know lawyers will be lined up to take the case.

On that last point, I think you're being overly optimistic. For example, I've heard a divorce lawyer could get access to those records. Or say you were a completely innocent suspect in another crime, more and more LE goes after those records. The internet is not safe, and dont't ask me why I'm posting here - it's probably not a safe idea long term.

Another way to browse from work if you have a home computer you can browse from. Use Remote Desktop to get to your home machine and browse from your home machine through Remote Desktop. You could also use VNC (TightVNC, RealVNC, UltraVNC or one of their peers). I like remote desktop a little better because it logs you out of your machine at home so that if the SO were to go into my room and turn on the monitor - all she's see is a logon screen. If she logged on, my session from work would be logged off, and she still wouldn't see what I had been doing. With VNC - that's not the case...

If your employer actively blocks porn websites and/or screens network logs to see what you are looking at, you'd be a fool to VNC into your home machine. This is just as incriminating (and possibly more so) than looking at RB. If you are surfing porn, they know that you are just violating their acceptable use policies. If you are VNCing to a machine outside their network, not only are you likely violating their acceptable use policies, but they don't KNOW what you are doing. You could be transferring intellectual property to someone else.

The rule should be -- if the AUP prohibits personal surfing or looking at porn, etc, DON'T use their computers and DON'T use their network to connect. If they won't allow you to bring a personal system in, use your cell phone via 3G or just wait till you get home.

I agree, even if you are running VNC over an encrypted VPN or
SSH connection the sysadmin can still remotely connect to your
PC and view what you are doing on your monitor. They can also log
your keystrokes or entire session. I know they do this certain
high tech companies because they are afraid of people looking to
steal their IP. I remember reading a story about a engineer in
India trying to steal code from company he worked for. He thought
he was being slick by copying and pasting code into a web email
account but he was busted.

Don't use your work PC to do anything you don't want your company to
know about!!! It's not worth it. Come on its not like the early to
mid 90s when decent bandwidth internet accounts were hard to get.
