"So what is wrong with a cell phone?"

I was told by a provider that she can't communicate by phone or text. What is wrong with a phone? I've never met a woman that can't text or call.

Have any of you out there had problems with a phone? Recording? Tracing?

Could be that she wants to e-mail only? How else do you communicate

and set up appointments?

Maybe she has a fear of brain cancer and the overuse of cell phones?

By any chance was this an asian provider, or one that doesn't have English as their first language? Could be just a translation slip. I've seen many ads that request no text messages so maybe this is all she meant, even though she said "phone or text". That was my first thought.

She is a newbie who had not run a simple search and has not read the many useful discussions on the benefits of owning a hobby phone. Though, for her it is not a hobby, it's her real job.

Different people have different preferences for communications modalities. Admittedly in this business the cell phone is very common, but it's not universal. A quick search will bring up plenty of folks who prefer email.

Some providers prefer you contact them thru email first then you
get their phone number. I think the idea is that the email
account has been registered and can be used to trace back
to you in case something goes wrong? With cell phones you
can be more anonymous. At least I think that's the theory.

Also providers who cannot afford a phone could use free web
email account and get access to that email via library PCs
or PC made available to motel/hotel guest in the manager's
office or lobby.

If it's an untraceable cell phone (AKA you paid cash 4 it) she can't scam you. If you use your computer they can trace it back to you with your icp number.

There are some providers that have opted to go this route (email first only) to filter out their target audience. I'm thinking such providers are more on the low-volume side and are exercising an extra step of discretion. This also weeds out random phone calls and text messages, mostly from guys that are into the "blow-and-go", and even guys that are just wasting their time - jokers, stalkers, etc. There are a handful of providers that I know of that conduct their business this way, and it actually works for them, and even to their new and established clients. Of course, this doesn't work for every hobbyist; and for that, there are plenty of other providers that still go the "call girl" way.

Such providers typically have smartphones (i.e., BlackBerry's, iPhones) where they can pick up emails as they come even if they're "out in the field". So don't fret about them having to find a computer just to answer your emails. If they don't have a smartphone and/or only checking emails whenever they get to a computer, I imagine they're even more on the real low-volume side as they're not anxiously putting more "numbers" on the board on a more consistent basis. Can you say, side-job? Nice!

So yes, it takes a little extra work to schedule with such providers the first time, and it'll be very rare that you'd get a same day appointment with them. References will most likely be a requirement also, so be ready for those. Also, make your email show a little bit of your nice personality -- it'll go an extra way in the YMMV department.

Like I said, such providers who require "email only first" are not for everyone. For those hobbyists that are okay with that, I think that you are in for a higher class of a provider -- more discretionary, on the low-volume side, just to name a couple of traits that I personally find extra appealing.

I've known a few who only want to communicate via email at first. For some reason, they don't want to maintain a second work-only phone, and until they trust you with their real name, don't want you to know their number.
