This question has become more relevant due to extensive shilling by professional shills (reviews and forums) with many handles.

It seems if there was a reasonable limit, the reviews would instantly become more credible.

How to go about limiting the handles while maintaining anonymity seems to be a major hurdle. Any suggestions here?

Otherwise, why not do it?

Can anyone really justify someone having 10 or 20 handles?

2, one for posting, one for reviews. How to limit them is a major hurdle.

I agree with Dunester, two is the number of handles I have. One for posting, and one for reviews.

I don't see any easy technical solution to stopping people from having multiple handles. There might be a financial solution, though: make everyone pay for RB membership. Of course, that would pretty much kill the supply of new members... I used the site for free for two months, and had a sense that I would make good use of it, before going VIP.

Isn't there a way to allow just one handle per IP address?

Your computer may NOT have a unique IPv4 address. Depending on how your internet service provider parcels out IP addresses, yours may change periodically.

IPv6, if it is ever fully implemented, will supposedly fix this problem.

Good idea, but impossible to implement. I hang out on other sites where people get the BanHammer daily. The idiots who get banned just open a new account. But get weeded out and banned again. IP ban does nothing, as soon as I disconnect my modem from power, then re-power it. Almost impossible for a perma-ban.

BanHammer victim here.

However, they've discovered a way to track MAC ID whatever that is.

I saw a log from them once where a provider had logged in on another provider's computer and they banned them both.

There's a way!

I am a proponent of ONE handle only.

Simply false. MAC ("Media Access Control") is a unique identifier assigned to the physical network interface in your computer, usually your ethernet card. This ID does *NOT* ever get included in the IP (Internet Protocol) packets that make up web and email traffic. It is sipmly not possibly to track an Internet user by MAC address. If you have a link to the contrary I will be very surprised, but perhaps you can post the exact info you saw and we can explain why it's wrong or you're misunderstanding it.

The initial DHCP request that your computer (or home router) makes to your ISP includes your MAC address. Actually, all of the packets that flow on the same subnet (from your computer / home router to your ISP) have the MAC address. Of course, it's generally possible to spoof (change to a different one) a MAC address if you really want to.

The MAC address is easy enough to ban instead/also, I would think.

But banning by IP or MAC is not "fair" if say, there are multiple RB users within a "company". Let's take an example of a 50 user company. They will typically share the same IP address (since they are NAT'd (masked) from the outside world). Taking that example into mind, say you have 3 RB users (who don't even know each other) within that company, and one of the three users is an asshole, that say, abuses the RB system with multiple handles for shilling, attack dogs, bad posts, etc. etc., then it's not fair to the two other "good" RB'ers if that IP address gets banned, right? Now if there's a way to install a "cookie" to reveal the ultimate MAC of the end-user's computer being used, now that would just be dandy mandy. From that stand-point, I may actually consider supporting spyware'ing that asshole's computer.

Which brings me to a pet peeve of mine and the subject of this discussion -- these abusive, delusional, needy, insecure, ball-less, pathetic, stalking, super-shilling, multi-faced, etc, etc, you name it, multiple handled RB users -- I mean, how pathetic can one be? Even threading to their own posts sometimes with counter or supportive arguments? Don't they have a life outside of this? Son-of-a-skanky-ass-bitch, right?

Yeah... these multi-faced, multi-handled RB cowards really pisses off sometimes.

OK.............

I have DSL here and I plain old don't know enough to get myself in trouble with computers. My earlier comments were based on information I got from another member of THAT board.

So, I woke up this morning and signed on to that site with a new user name, password etc. and navigated around a bit.

Had a cup of coffee, signed off and went for a drive on the Coast where I live.

Came home, signed back on and found myself banned again.

You figure it out.

How they do it is a mystery to me, but again, I've seen a log sent by email to the provider I mentioned earlier who is a favorite on this site Laura De Leon, who lived in Virgina and at the time. Paola Rey was visiting her and signed on to her log in on Laura's computer and they both were banned. Later after a number of emails they were re-instated. I don't know how they do it, but I do know why they are so anal retentive.

CONTROL.

Very few people still use dial up modems to access the internet. On these services, yes you will have a different IP address each time. But dedicated internet service like cable, DSL, T1, etc. usually have static IP's attached, yes?

I think that if you power cycle(cut the power for 2 min. then plug it back in) your modem, you get a new IP each time you do it. Thats why an IP ban does not really work.

Even on DSL, when your router goes quiet, your license for an IP address can expire. Your service provider may then assign that IP address to someone else. When you reconnect, your IP address can change.

In practice, your IP address is stable for several days, but it's NOT permanent unless you pay for a static IP address (and it costs, I know, because I needed one for a while to access a university's VPN).

I know alot of guys have review handles and chat handles and what not because they don't want to deal with people they flamed on the board or gave bad reviews to, in chat or at mixers. I understand the logic of this but I still think they're being chicken shits.

Having only one handle is necessary to maintain the usefulness of rb.

Gaming the system via multiple handles makes info useless and untrustworthy, discourages participation, drives people away, and discourages new people and growth.

rb may be able to limp along despite the multiple handles, but does so far below its real potential.

Agreed. Put your money where your text is. Of course, your "value/history" as a reviewer could be completely independent from your "personality" as a board member/contributor.

When initially creating my logins, I decided it would keep me honest, as a reviewer and commenter, if my handles were the same.

As many of us know from our online past, assume that anything you write will be viewed by all (SOs excluded, here at least..).

May we all be Saints today, my son.
