"Using Tineye for photo searching"

Tineye seems like a pretty good idea, but I'm not sure how well its working.
I trying searching on a picture of Lillian Ward, a well-known 5-star provider. I copied a link to a photo from her RB ad into the Tineye search engine. I know this photo exists on Lillian's website, because I checked first.
Tineye did not get a hit on it.

It could either be that the site has not yet been crawled by Tineye or the site prevents crawling.

From their site's FAQ:

How many images are in TinEye's search index?
TinEye is constantly crawling the web and updating our image database regularly. We also accept direct contributions of complete online image collections. To date, TinEye has indexed 1,630,532,499 images from the web. We add tens of millions of new images to TinEye every month, and our index is on the grow.

To receive notification when we update our index, please subscribe to our Updates RSS feed. Alternatively you can follow us on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook.

How do I prevent TinEye from crawling my site? Does TinEye obey robots.txt?
The Tineye crawler does obey robots.txt. Adding a robots.txt file to your website with an entry to disallow "TinEye" will prevent TinEye from crawling it in the future.

Tineye no longer searches what they deem 'adult' websites so its basically useless for redbook related uses. You can thank the investors for this policy change.

That's interesting, because when I searched the 2nd photo from this ad, I got a hit from a porn site:

I right click an image I want to Tineye and save it on my disc.
Then I upload it to Tineye and have Tineye check it out.
This eliminates a layer of complexity.

Do you have a link to the source of that statement? I briefly scanned the Tineye site and their FAQ and could not find anything substantiating that other than their TOS saying not to upload pornographic images.

Maybe the answer is somewhere in the General Discussion Forum on the Tineye site. They have about 100 topics or so and I didn't go through many of them but did see this:

http://forums.tineye.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=119

Maybe they consider it a "porn" site for some particular reason:

This whole face-recognition technology scares the shit out of me, because I have anonymous (supposedly) profiles on personals sites, and they require face pictures, and I do NOT want these to get connected to my real identity, which often uses the same face pictures, or ones close enough that a sufficiently advanced face-recognition technology could identify.

I'm not sure its "face recognition" that's being employed by tineye. Matches for photos can come up when the face is blocked out. I think they're looking at the whole picture. I think it would work on pictures that don't even have people in them.

I'm with you on the face recognition argument though...

Dudes -- check out the technical aspects of tinyeye -- their scripts do not do "visual search", just looks for meta-data in the JPG/PNG/GIF/BMP and similar name structures.

Some of the pimps and handlers are too stupid to clear or clone images in Photoshop (a five second process) before uploading them.

Visual search (something both Google and Bing want to do) will be the next big thing in 2011 or 2012.

I'm going to disagree with you, syn5.

While tineye is not doing facial recognition, it's definitely looking at more than file attributes and meta data. I think that file attributes and meta data are certainly part of its algorithm, but I would argue that actual analysis of the image is part of it as well. You can find tineye hits on pictures that have completely different names and have been completely stripped of their meta data.

Good thing you just explained it to them though. I think a mod should delete this comment - lets keep stupid pimps stupid.

Recognition technology is already advanced, So much so that my standard Apple IMAC has a command to "go find this face". Works just like tineye but it scans your personal photos recognizing the image, whereas T/E searches dara (thats why Tineye will find altered pics because they are searching the data, not the image. Apple uses recognition technology.

You better get those pics off wherever you don;y want them because the connection can be easily made.

Airport security technology is advancing its use rapidly.

LE is using face recognition software in crowds to find felons or known terrorists. I first read of this a few years ago taking place in downtown London. LE here has started using this technique at super bowls. They will expand its usage. DC police use a similar technique for scanning license plates.

This part may be science fiction that is not to far off. While watching a series called MI5 (Spooks in the UK) they used a combination of facial recognition software tied into all of the CCTVs to follow a suspect.
