"Proper Use of the Hobby Phone"

Based on your feedback, I just purchased a hobby phone from Wal-Mart. I do have some questions, and I'd appreciate your feedback. Some background: I'm married, have young kids and see a few RAs on the side (about once a week). And I'd like my hobby to remain a secret.

1) Charging - Where do charge your hobby phone?
2) Carry - Do you carry both your regular and hobby phone with you? If so, when and where?
3) SIM Chips - Does anyone swap their hobby phone SIM chip with their regular SIM chip in their regular cell phone when the need arises?
4) Texting - My RAs like to text messages to me fairly regularly. Is this advised (I like getting their messages, BTW)?
5) Voice Mail - Do you leave an answering message or use the standard message?
6) Discovery - What do you say is your SO discovers your hobby phone?

Any other advice? Thanks!

1) I charge it on the nightstand next to my bed.
2) I do not have a regular cell phone and only carry the hobby cell phone when hobbying. Otherwise, it is turned off and recharging next to my bed.
3) don't know anything about sim chips. I just use a very basic disposable phone
4) I don't know how to text, but I do read those sent to me.
5) I don't have voice mail set up. In fact, I only turn on the phone when I want to call a provider. I don't really want them calling me or texting me.
6) I do not have an SO, so I don't worry about discovery any at all (explains why I leave the phone out in the open)

There are my answers, but they probably don't help you due to our very different answers on #6.

1. Keep separate phones. The hobby phone can be cheap and should be anonymous.

2. Turn the hobby phone on when you want to make or receive calls. Turn it off when you don't.

3. If you have an SO, never take the phone home or leave it in a car parked at your house. Otherwise, keep it with you when you want to make or receive calls. Leave it somewhere (like your office desk drawer) when you don't.

4. Charge the phone at any convenient place that is not your home (See #3.) and has electricity.

5. Assuming that your phone is anonymous (See #1.), text away. But don't send or store any personal info you wouldn't want someone else ("manager," LE, SO) to read. Do not send info that would let someone find your home or work location.

6. Use the default voicemail greeting, the one that just repeats your phone number. If you ask providers to call you back, tell them that this is the greeting they will hear.

7. You did read #3, right? Okay, so let's suppose you forgot and she finds it while hanging up the jacket that you tossed on the chair. Or maybe it rings (See #2.). "Oh shoot! I found that (on BART, on the street, in the office conference room, etc.) and forgot to turn it in." But let's suppose she wants to read the names and text messages stored on the phone. (See #5.) You did leave the phone off, right? (See #2.) Good for you. That means when she starts it up, she will be prompted for...

8. ...the passcode, which you set up when you bought the phone and which neither one of you will know.

9. And of course, when she checks your credit card bill, nothing will be there, because you paid for everything in cash.

Enjoy the hobby!

Fantastic advice, Aprime. Though if my SO ever found a second phone there would be no story good enough to convince her it wasn't mine and its purpose for misdeeds.

My simple rules. Charge it at work, leave it at work. Remove txt's and calling history after each use.

Yep Aprime nailed it, my hobby phone was stolen out of my car recently. Worried a moment then I remembered there's absolutely nothing on it to tie it to me.

Someone got 10-15 free local minutes and that's it.

>1) Charging - Where do charge your hobby phone?

Car as your driving would be cool. Or depending on your work situation, maybe there.

>2) Carry - Do you carry both your regular and hobby phone
>with you? If so, when and where?

Actually, the way I would do it would be to get a phone with two dial in numbers, and keep one on vibrate (probably the hobby line) and one on ring. And if you aren't expecting a call, leave the hobby phone line in silent mode no ring or vibrate. Nextel phones can do this, others too but I haven't checked out which lately. I think you could set them up with different security codes on the different lines, but I'm not 100% on that. Have your bill sent to a PO box; tell your wife it is paid for by the company or something. Or, maybe have the bill paid automatically from a CC IF that doesn't display too much info on the CC receipt, and have the bill sent to work or whatever.

>3) SIM Chips - Does anyone swap their hobby phone SIM chip
>with their regular SIM chip in their regular cell phone when
>the need arises?

That isn't a good approach, IMO. Sims and sim sockets aren't designed for daily use. Good way to break a phone.

>4) Texting - My RAs like to text messages to me fairly
>regularly. Is this advised (I like getting their messages,
>BTW)?

I would firmly discourage that with them. You don't want any written messages, no matter what.

>5) Voice Mail - Do you leave an answering message or use the
>standard message?

On the hobby line, standard message, of course.

>6) Discovery - What do you say is your SO discovers your
>hobby phone?

"Step back, BEE-OTCH!" just kidding.

If you follow my plan here, that shouldn't happen.

>
>Any other advice? Thanks!

If you do keep your second phone, Is there a place near your home (but not your car) where you can store it? A storage place with late hours? A bar where you know the people? 711 where you know the manager? Friend who is single and won't turn on you?

Thing is, you sound a little shaky about this whole concept. What your wife can't get her hands on, she can't compromise.

Hope some of this helps.

Are we to assume he's sticking it up his ass? BTW, I've never set up VM on my hobby phone as both a security measure and to avoid calls from providers fishing for business.

Hmmm. Tried signing up for Google voice, but got a message saying it is available by invitation only and I will receive an email when it's available. Is that normal?

Update: It is by invitation only, but an RB bro sent me an invitation, and so far things seem to work fine.

One question though--the number appearing on the incoming call is whatever number Google happens to be using to connect to the telco network instead of the number you get from Google, and providers cannot use it to return the call. Does that make girls nervous? So many of them fuss about blocked numbers in their ads.

There are two ways to have your google number show as your return number. I'm assuming you are using a mobile phone here, but the same basic stuff applies to any phone.

1. Manually. Call your own google number from your phone. When the computer starts talking, hit star to get to the min menue, than hit two. Dial the 10 digit number of the girl your calling, and then hit pound. Your google number will appear on her phone as the origen number. I'm assuming you have disconnected, on your mobile only, the necessity to enter your 4 digit security code. If you haven't, there is another step but it will be obvious.

2. By programming. If your phone can program speed dials, you can make it so that people you have on speed dial can be reached with a one button push, and will get your google number showing on their phone. This involves programing in some strings, which is a bit time consuming, but no big deal. It does vary somewhat depending on what phone you are using.

For more info, go here (which is a google help forum) and then punch in "string" or "dialing string" in search to get to your issue more specifically. if you post, mention what kind of phone you are trying to program.

THIS (programming) is why you probably want to disconnect the 4 digit security code, which you can do, on your mobile, by going to the GV settings. Not having the security code makes the speed dials much easier toprogram.

Hope this helps.

Yup, that all works. However, having your fav providers on speed dial is a little risky with an SO around. In the Google settings it says that displaying your Google number is an option that's "coming soon". I hope they're serious about that. That way you could use the Atomic Web browser like BluIce said, keep your providers in the Google contacts, and password protect the browser.

Then program one of your speed dial buttons with all the string stuff except the final 10 digit number you are calling. Hit that button, put in the 10 digit phone number, hit pound, and your golden.

   Excellent suggestions!

It would be better to say it's a friend's phone than one you just found, then you can argue that she shouldn't snoop and grab it back from her.

I recently signed up for Google Voice (free) and it's a true breakthrough. Not sure how it will help with hobbying, but undoubtedly somehow. It can simultaneously send a provider's message or call to multiple phones if you configure it to do so, and it can transcribe voicemails and forward them as text and email messages, so probably dangers lurking as well.

I recently saw a provider who uses Google Voice. First time calling, I had to say something before it routed me to her cell/voice mail. I assume it somehow screened for my area code or verified that I wasn't blocked. Second time, it went right through to her cell. She also shares the google number with a friend, so I'm assuming it sends my call to either or both of their cells when one is turned off.

I use the magic jack, its cheap !!! I use the call forward feature to forward all incoming calls to my cell phone. So I only have the one cell phone. It has voice mail and greeting features.
It allows me to call out of a safe number and allows me to keep my personal cell number private. Plus you can always easily change the number if you really want or need to change it.
the downside is that you have to make the outgoing calls from the computer where the magic jack is installed and no texting ( I think).

   1)Charging: in the car
2)Carry: the hobby phone goes with me when hobbying, NOT the regular phone.
3) SIM: no swapping as I have a pay as you go hobby phone
4) Texting: I get texts from RAs including directions and sometimes alerts if they are not busy.
5) Voicemail: My greeting is off, but you can leave a message
6) Discovery: I have no numbers or messages stored except for a couple of numbers to businesses that I would never call, therefore it must be someone elses phone.
