"before the Internet"

Anyone else remember using the yellow pages to order up an escort? What amazes me, looking back to my heyday 1991 - 1994, was how simple it was in the old days. No acronyms -- NONE -- how the heck were we able to communicate? No pics, no published info. Just you, the phone book, the motel room phone, a pimp on the line with vague assurances of "a REALLY good time", and very attractive young "models". Upon arrival the Model would state a simple list of 3 or 4 or 5 levels, the last being "straight sex", maybe some trailer-trashy ones would offer anal, but I never had that type of escort. I damn near fell in love with one 19 yr-old who went independent and traveled to Florida with me to have an "off duty" weekend getaway.

SA was an entirely different animal too. The streets were lined with gold back then.

Before Internet it was MP, SW and one encounter with an escort from agency from Yellow Pages. There was also that place in Berkeley 30+ years ago named Touch. That place was the best (even by today's standards). The one escort experience was a "bust". They sent me the opposite of what I asked for. 15+ yrs older and 25-40lbs heavier. SW action in SF about 15 yrs ago was hopping. There were some decent looking ones out there. And you could get a semi-nude or nude (she is naked) lap dance at MBOT for as little as $1 (with touching). They didn't do extras then although there was a period when you could DATY the dancer in the Kopenhagen room. MBOT was wall to wall guys then (very busy). The girls would make the rounds in all the rows in the NY room. Now lap dances are $40+, they do overpriced extras and the place is a ghost town. They are pricing themselves out of business.

>The one escort experience was a "bust"

Was not too bad for me. I remember I had to travel to Seattle for business every week, for a couple of days. Tried a couple of escort agencies and many girls. With trial and error, I found myself a 19 year old who was a dynamite. Once I found that one I had no desire to try anyone else. I started seeing her on and off for about 3 years, but I did not have the diversity I do now. I feel so spoiled now!

I also remember the good old days of MBOT. I had so much good time there.

Wow, flashbacks back to about '93! Yeah, I can still picture myself pouring over the yellow pages ads having picked a hotel with free local calls for my business trips and sitting on the bed working the room phone for half the evening. Sometimes it turned out okay, but even then the ads went outta date so fast and the pages torn out that RB, BP even CL weren't even a dream we dared to entertain. Life's improved a LOT!

The streets were much better pre internet. A drive down OFarrel or Geary would reveal dozens of hot white girls dressed in hooker gear. You could get out of the car, walk around and shop. Just like TJ . The downside of the internet is that the streets only have junkies in SF and black girls in oakland. The upside is you can be more assured of getting what you want on the internet. But it took away the fun of shopping.

Driving the TL and all around San Francisco downtown was insane, we're talkin' back around early '90's. Morning, mid-day, evening, wee hours, always! Hell, my 1st "SW" was a hot Asian in a Celica GT racing me with the windows down and she kinda started this thing... Smiling, winking, blew a kiss, pulled up close, I followed her, wow... Yeah, what the heck did we know it'd all turn into some internet, what the HECK would that be!?!? And the cell phones looked like...

Never used the Yellow Pages or classified. I am "picky" and like to see what I'm getting. From 1974 until the internet I used SW or massage parlors, and on occasion, legal brothels because I could "see what I was getting".

This is why fake pics are an immediate rejection unless it's an AAMP, where I expect fake pics but you can't see the face anyway and the body type is usually very close.

   My sources:

- The Spectator (which, if I'm not mistaken, descended from the Barb)

- Chronicle and Marin IJ classifieds for FBSM

There was something thrilling about those pre-internet days. The initial phone call required more of both of you--you had to try and establish a rapport and tune in to what she was/wasn't saying, and how she did/didn't say it. It was much harder on the provider, I think, because with the exception of a few of the classifieds in the Spectator and the Guardian, there were no pictures. Even the smoking hot babes had to be good on the phone in order to get the appointment. That in itself is something of a talent.

Then there was the anticipation of not knowing exactly what to expect when you showed up at her place. Will she be great looking? Would she be a tiger or a barely there? Would she do X, Y, or Z?

These days we can search and filter to find providers who fit exactly the small niche that we seek. With rb we can qualify on specific physical attributes, specific sevices offered, location, price, and review rating. It's certainly more efficient, and there seem to be many more providers than I remember. Still, in some ways it's not as much fun--a bit of the thrill is gone.

Related thought/speculation--I wonder if the growth of the internet has shifted providers away from the street. If it weren't for the internet, would we have seen such a precipitous decline in SW?

The internet is clearly shifting providers away from the street. Police hassle indoor prostitutes far less than SWs, who have a much greater impact on cities (and those who vote for mayors and police chiefs). Also the internet allows prostitutes to advertise and get their own clients independent of a pimp, and therefore make more money.

A sociologist named Sudhir Venkatesh has studied prostitution in both Chicago and New York, and has collected real data (unlike nearly all other academic research, based largely on interviews with women in shelters). His work fills nearly an entire chapter in the book Superfreakonomics, a good read and unlike most of what's written about prostitution it rings pretty true.

A brief interview:

to honor the Spectator!. there was even a time when you could go to the Chron, but they backed off pretty quick.

And the street scene....god. The TL was already mentioned. You could also wander down Capp in the Mission and sometimes get 20 offeres in 4 or 5 blocks, at times. Some pretty decent.

Sigh.

Looks like I'm the only big time call-girl-monger? I'm so glad I got to enjoy the last of the tat-free beauties with pettable pelts on the kitty. Must admit I did lose my virginity at 16 with a black street walker in Ft. Lauderdale in the back seat of my Plymouth Satellite sdn. DATY w/ a SW = thinking with the small head ;) That was just before AIDS was discovered.

RB is perfect for me now. I have more fun browsing the ads and fantasizing than the actual sessions, not that I haven't enjoyed every one of my sessions this year.

The Internet has allowed customers to communicate, and that's been a wonderful thing. Before the Internet it was a crapshoot. I'm an old fart and I remember driving around with a Spectator and a pocket full of change for the pay phones! Yeah I'm old

I used to access a dialup BBS for information about AMPS and basic reviews about the girls. It was very reliable. Also, it had quite a bit of good stuff related to the street scene.

I doubt, and I found the information though sparse to be incredibly valuable. I'd find a place in the Spectator and check to see if there was any info on the BBS, it worked for me.

I'm sure more than a few old duffers like me have memories of using the yellow pages when there was nothing else handy - seemed like whenever I needed them most desperately, the pages containing massage and escort ads were missing from the phone book in my room or the nearest phone booth!

For the most part, even before the internet there were better means of finding adult entertainment, all of which that I can remember have been mentioned previously in this thread (i.e. Spectator, etc.). Still, there were times the phone book came in handy, like when I was out of town and unfamiliar with the local adult entertainment scene, the yellow pages (when the juicy pages weren't missing) served as kind of a barometer of whether or not there was any action around. Sometimes the ads for erotic massages were as advertised, sometimes not. At least you could find the places and give them a call. Same for the strip clubs (which sometimes were great places to score extras, sometimes not).

Last but not least, since back in those days cell phones, let alone hobby phones, complete with address books listing your favorite hangouts were not widespread (at least I didn't have one), the good old yellow pages could always be relied on for the Golden Gypsy ad, so I could call up and verify whether my latest favorite was available on a particular night.

In the 80's I used the Yellow Pages as many have mentioned in this thread.

Occasionally used the magazines that you could pick up in Adult stores. They used to have telephone services where you'd call a number and could talk to some girls (charged by the minute)and then set up a date with one you might like (although site unseen!).

I got lucky once and met a beautiful college girl at UCB who was working for grad school tuition. She and I took off for a weekend in Reno once - one of the best weekends I've ever had with an escort. The cost was like $800 for 3 nights and 3 days. It's a great memory!
