"The last days of CL Adult Services?"

It seems to me that the era of Craigslist as a venue to post and search for adult services may be coming to an end.

No, I have not heard anything official, but there is quite a bit of pressure building on Craigslist. Increasingly in the past few months, CL has been publicly associated with negatives. There was the "Craigslist Rapist", the "Craigslist murderer". Just recently, MSNBC broadcast a series on sexual slavery in the US, and in three episodes the site was labeled as facilitating young prostitution and sex trafficking, with screenshots of the site prominently displayed. District Attorneys in more than a dozen states are pressuring and threatening CL with legal action.

With all that negative publicity, I fear that at one point, CL will bow out. It is just too much trouble and a distraction for them. I think they are just holding out on doing so because they want to champion First Amendment rights, and two because they have not found a face saving way to cancel these categories without being accused of caving in to "The Man".

But I think that time is coming... soon

If you take a look at the adult services on CL you'll notice most of the ad are posted by the same girls over and over, and most of them are B&S, and some of them also have a ad on RB.

I fear you're on to something. CL gets a lot of heat because it's so visible. Everyday people use it a lot, and bump into the adult ads. This makes it much more of a target for public crusaders than say Redbook. You have to be looking to find this place.

The great thing about CL was that, for essentially the same reason, it attracted a lot of non-pros and "curious" women in the adult and casual encounters sections. A lot of women have trouble calling themselves "hookers" -- and don't know that sites like Redbook and Eros Guide exist -- but serendipity brought them to the CL adult sections and they gave it a try. I found my most genuine companions that way.

CL seems totally spammed now. It was useless last time I tried.

Another side of the coin is that CL helped wound street action at the turn of the century (ha ha. fogey speak.) and if CL adult services ends it could mean a return to more escort level girls hitting the pavement on a slow Saturday night. For some of us this is a GREAT thing. It's the thrill of the hunt.

I also wonder how RB will be affected. To a degree I have already seen RB forum and classified ads display CL type ads, B&S ops and obvious spamming. Private forums seem to be the only areas which have yet to be invaded and more closely mirror what RB was originally intended for. I also suspect that if and when CL Adult Services ends, authorities may then turn their attention to RB.

I'm skeptical. Hardly anyone in the general public has heard of RB, much less used it.

Feds and DA's go after people, sites, or whatever that will get them headlines. Everybody has heard of CL so going after CL gets them headlines. The general public has to awareness of RB. If the feds' goal was really to shut down sites that enable prostitution, they would come after RB; but that's not their goal. Their goal is to make headlines and get votes.

i certainly hope CL does not change anything they do. Not because i use them for hobbying, but because it is not the governments job to regulate speech and how its delivered.

If LE were smart they would use CL to snare pedophiles, like the famous case in FL, rather than shut it down.

I screwed my brains out. what's your excuse?

Although I would never use CL adult ads for my sexual needs, I hope CL holds its ground and clings to the 1st amendment for dear life. If they fall RB may be next, and then it'll be harder to find quality poon whenever you want it. Everyone needs to man up and tell everyone there is nothing wrong with paying a woman for sex, it really needs to be legalized. Everytime pay for sex is discussed in the media, they always talk out of their asses about sexual slavery when we all know there is no such thing.

>>Everyone needs to man up and tell everyone there is nothing wrong with paying a woman for sex, it really needs to be legalized.>>

Agreed !! After all, every guy interested in sex with a girl pays for it, one way or the other~either by dropping money on a girl for dinner, flowers, a movie, before getting in her pants or by seeing a provider. The only difference in the two scenarios is, the girl makes the money directly from the latter and it is spent on her in the former. Either way, we pay for sex.

So, why not face this fact and legalize the trade? What's wrong, after all, with a guy wanting to skip the preliminaries and getting right down to business? It's a lot less hassle not to mention a lot less money.

First of all, no big loss. Though a few have been successful on CL most of what I read here says it's BS.

Trying to stop such ads is a slippery slope against the first amendment. It will never fly. It's election season so there will be lots of noise about emotional topics. I recently heard that Laura Ingraham (conservative) knew about the mosque being built 2 blocks from ground zero a year ago. Now conservatives are making a big deal about it.

You think the anti-sex brigade that criminalizes the private activities of consenting adults would stop at CL?

Attorney Generals actions are misdirected -- the whole reason why CL has a adult section is that people used to post these ads under the classified sections and they would be all mixed up in the dating section. If CL gets rid of the adult section, guess what will happen? All the same ads will still be on CL, just posted under the casual dating section or W4M section or randomly all over CL....

I'll admit, I don't know very much about conducting business on the internet, but... couldn't Craig just move his servers to another country? I know it will be fucked up for the people here who would lose jobs, not to mention whatever tax revenue the govt. collects, but it seems like that what things are coming to.

Many of the sites dealing with Escorts have moved their sites already on foreign servers. Still, that may not be enough. A great number of them have incorporated abroad, judging from the addition of SA (Societe Anonyme) or NV (Naamloze Vennootschap)next to their names, instead of Inc. of LLC. This makes these sites run by foreign entities doing business in foreign locales.

Some of the responders did indeed pick up on the fact that if CL is forced to remove adult services, then that will have an inpact on other adult advertising sites. In the MSNBC series I mentioned, take a wild guess which other site's screenshots were shown? Now, the site was not specifdically mentioned by name, but it was not difficult to recognize the site. Don't think that this only affects Craigslist.

Craigslist Adult Ads Under Fire
Seventeen state attorneys general sent a letter to Craigslist last week, calling on the San Francisco-based classified ad website to shut down its "adult services" section over prostitution concerns. We take up the debate over the online ads.

So reading all this got me a little curious about where RB is based, legally. If my casual research is correct, that would be Victoria south Australia. If so, that should give RB some protection that a US based organization, like CL, would not have.

There is a lot on the streets now, but more subtle. I think one factor is that once 42% voted to legalize or decriminalize prostitution, it stayed illegal but cops are more focused on stopping pimps and traffickers, not legitimate women just trying to do it as a consenting adult not under the power or force of a man.

CL was good in that women who thought about it might do it once. I met a lot who would meet me for coffee and talk and were open to an arrangement, had thought about it, and did it maybe a few times but not again. These were exciting, natural experiences that felt like the real thing. Any woman on RB will feel like a pro, it may still be fun but won't be the same as a mutually beneficial arrangement and open-minded woman trying it for the first time, seeing the feeling of power and adventure in her eyes. I think a lot of women that don't want to do it a lot will do it once with a decent-looking guy who talks them into it, it's a secret fantasy of many.

I even had one once pay me back the second time, I gave her 200, she called me the next day, I said I was broke, she said come over, I hesitated, she said I'll pay you, got the 200 back. She was in her early '30s and gorgeous, and on vacation from New York. She passed out drunk after hours of sex and I peeked at her ID, it was in plain view on a table. I googled her later and found out she had an MBA from Brown (Ivy League), and had a prestigious job and earned over $300,000 a year, far more than I, in Manhattan. She obviously didn't need any money, and was living out a fantasy. She was successful but had an alcohol problem. Now those were happy fun times and it won't happen on RB.
