Fisher: Woman s massage services were not appreciated in Los Gatos

The ad on Craigslist for massage services by "beautiful Asian girls" caught the attention of the Los Gatos vice cops. But while Amy Hu, a certified massage therapist at Relaxing Massage on North Santa Cruz Avenue, is indeed beautiful and Asian, when an undercover cop asked for a "happy ending" massage, she indignantly refused.

"I don't do that, I do massage only," says Hu, mortified that anyone would think the business she and her husband opened last year was a front for prostitution. "I'm a good girl."

A good girl and a good massage therapist, according to her clients. But not, apparently, a good enough businessperson to pass muster in Los Gatos.

While the police sting turned up no hanky-panky, it did uncover some code violations. On an April afternoon, the police burst into Relaxing Massage and hauled Hu's husband, David Jie, to jail while she and their 6-year-old daughter watched in horror. The town yanked their permit and now Hu and Jie face losing their business and their reputations.

"We thought Los Gatos was the perfect town," Hu, 36, told me Friday, her eyes filling with tears. "It was clean and nice and the people were friendly. I think they did not want us here."

Not a good fit

Los Gatos may be clean and nice, but it's not a place to bend the rules -- at least not for Asian massage therapists. None has stayed open downtown more than a few months. Hu thinks it's because businesses

offering $59 massages aren't welcome in classy downtown Los Gatos, with its boutiques, home furnishings dealers and high-end day spas.

But Town Attorney Michael Martello says if the cops are particularly tough on massage parlors, it's because the industry is rife with prostitution and unlicensed operators.

"They are not like other businesses," he said. "When they are massaging and touching people, they are getting intimate with them -- not in biblical sense, of course -- people have a right to know who they are, that they aren't criminals."

I understand his concerns. Yet I think the cops may have gone overboard on this one.

Chinese immigrants Hu and Jie borrowed $40,000 to fix up their studio and signed a three-year lease. Their landlord, Joe Vieira, told me Hu was meticulous about getting the necessary permits and licenses from the town before opening in October. If she violated any laws, he believes it was out of ignorance. For example, it's illegal to put signs on the sidewalk, but lots of downtown businesses do it. Why was she the only one cited?

"I think she's getting a raw deal," he said.

Stung by the cops

According to police records, the provocative Craigslist ad, which Hu says a friend created for her, started it all. An undercover officer twice tried to catch Hu providing illegal favors, but she didn't take the bait. At one point, the cop reported, his genital area was left uncovered briefly, a code violation. During another, she had a therapist assisting her who didn't have a town permit.

Then he asked to come in for a massage after hours, claiming he was a chef who worked until 10. Hu says she reluctantly agreed, not wanting to disappoint her customer. She had no idea it was a setup.

Clearly Hu made mistakes. Martello says she made too many to forgive.

"If you say everything was a mistake, then you don't know how to run your business," he said.

But this business never posed a danger to the good citizens of Los Gatos. By closing it down, much more is lost than gained.

She followed the rules, but because there are SOME Asian massage places that do more (bless them), the coppers enforced code violations or other mistakes to make her legitimate business fail?

POLICE STATE: LOS GATOS!!

What a complete joke. I've been in bars in that town over the past 20 years that have a code violation every three feet. I hope that article stirs the pot and the massage shop proprietors find a good lawyer.

From our, the hobbyists' viewpoint, this was something of a rip off given the her ads for "beautiful Asian girls."

It would be interesting to know which CL section those ads were in.

C/L ads were in Therapeutic section. BTW, driving from the post office to the 7-11 on Santa Cruz Ave today, I counted 18 street signs. Los Gatos is going to need a bigger jail, because to be fair, I'm sure they'll arrest all these business owners too.

I'm not suggesting that the business was not legit but placing an ad in CL advertising 'beautiful Asian girls' had to have attracted real customers looking for more than just a massage. Hard to believe she hadn't had more than just the cop asking for a happy ending. Hopefully she can re-start her business and, next time, post an ad that explicitly says therapeutic only.

I think they're being racist in Los Gatos. If the owners were white, they would not have been harrassed.

Let's hope they succeed. Let's give them the business.

The cops need to focus on more important issues than a couple of immigrants stuggling to make it.

"I think they're being racist in Los Gatos. If the owners were white, they would not have been harrassed" ... and what are you basing this ignorant comment on? I'm getting sick and tired of everyone crying race. There are lots of minority owned businesses in LG.

Years ago, stopped for a cold drink after a day of fun at the shooting range on Skyline Blvd above Los Gatos. Had to adjust the load in the van, so a few of us pulled out some weapons. Well, some fine LG citizen sees us and calls the cops. They respond like we were robbing the gas station. We were parked at the edge of lot, 40 feet from the station. Weapons all unloaded, actions open, trigger guards in all handguns. Three of us were active army, wearing our field jackets. Another is a cadet at POST Academy wearing his cadet cap. Cops see our arsenal(like 30 weapons for 9 guys) shit a brick and take us down on our faces. Patted down and van contents strewn all over the lot. Taken in and our stories checked...Ft. Ord MP's verify our leave status, POST Academy vouches for cadet and others have no record anywhere. Released without even a "sorry". Why am I boring you with this tale? ALL NINE OF US ARE ASIAN.

Get serious ... i bet no matter what race you all were you'd have raised one hell of a scene pulling out that kind of arsenal. I know if i saw 9 guys of any race pull out that kind of weaponry in my neighborhood i'd shit a brick before knowing the whole story.

"... and what are you basing this ignorant comment on?" Based on cops being racists?

Cops don't ask for a "happy ending" at non-Asian message parlors.

This is blatant INJUSTICE, because the shop is owned by Asians. This couple went through the city process, did everything LG Planning required and obtained ALL the necessary permits before opening, according to this article (I had read it yesterday in the paper).

If no Asian massage place has stayed open for more than a few months (meaning there have been several over time) but the city gave permits to the Hu's despite this, it cries that they knew before hand what would happen and obviously conspired to bring this about.

A case like this should go to the ACLU in hopes the city of LG gets their asses sued off !!!

   Read between the lines...
The cops may not have caught them, but the activity was clearly fishy.

In my mind it is a bigger crime to lure guys in with suggestive ads saying things like "beautiful young Asian girls", and then NOT deliver anything but a regular massage. They should have arrested them for FRAUD and NOT delivering a HE, as the ad suggests. I say thank you to the LGPD for saving us guys from being duped and conned.

I'm sure the cops would not have had a problem with a legitimate therapeutic spa advertising therapeutic services the way such businesses do.

yeah it is stupid that when there is apparently only one women giving the massages that she would advertise "beautiful young Asian girls". It misleads potential customers and attracts the police. You think she would know better.

In the town where I live the massage places do this false advertising too and it pisses me off, even if I am just looking for a massage, when the woman are over 40 and the ads says "beautiful young Asian girls".

In my experience Asian massage parlor ads are full of false advertising and fake picture.

i suspect she didn't speak english very well, at least wasn't so familiar with the idioms (the hardest part of a language to learn, and the last to be mastered).

i very much doubt she had much idea what the suggestive undertone of "beautiful asian girls" meant. whomever wrote the ad, though, probably did, and figured it'd net her more business, thinking of course like a good old american pt barnum huckster.

then i'm also sure that more than a few customers came in wanting more, but she probaly chalked it up to just americans being horndogs.

i once had a strange theraputic/non-theraputic wires-crossed experience in dallas. the shop had a mildly suggestive ad, but when i got there, the masseuse was adamant about not doing anything sexual, no matter my offers of tips or whatever. she seemed amused by my raging hard-on (i was young), but didn't acknowledge it outright, and sure didn't touch it. she did howeveer have feathers there, which i asked her to use on me, and she did, everywhere EXCEPT my dick. it was pleasurable in some ways, frustrating in most, and she definitely had a wry smile the whole time. i walked out at the end of the massage with the huge hard-on still intact. she got paid a theraputic massage type fee. and, the masseuse was as white as morgan fairchild (and almost as good looking too). so, who knows, maybe she was usually game for more, but thought i was a cop doing a sting or something, or maybe she was just scamming guys and indulging her domme side in a non-consensual kind of way.

in this case, yeah, something iis wrong, but i suspect it's the ad writer who contributed the most to this grand fuck-up.

They are not as innocent as you think, and they learn very quickly that phrases like "Grand Opening" and "Beautiful Young Asian Girls" are what brings in the customers. They can pretend they don't know, but they do.

Cops says he works till ten and can he see her after hours. The cop does not understand Chinese mind. They will stay after to make appointment to make the extra money.

Also, claims his genitals was left exposed for a short time which broke code. Then he should have kept himself cover. They came there to bust them no matter what.

Yes.
Cops can lie, and entrap people, and it's somehow OK.
There should be a way to sue and convict the fuckers for soliciting illegal acts.
