"Do Alcohol and Ibuprofen Mix?"

Q: Can you drink alcohol with ibuprofen?
— Sharon, Georgia

A:
While it is generally safe to take ibuprofen and drink alcohol, it is highly recommended that you limit the amount of alcohol you drink while taking any medication, especially ibuprofen. Alcohol can irritate your stomach and intestinal tract, and taking ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin, for an extended period of time can also lead to stomach and intestinal irritation, as well as ulcers and potential bleeding problems.

Also, depending on the medical condition for which you are taking ibuprofen, high dosage and long-term use of NSAIDs may cause gastrointestinal problems. So, make sure you read the label directions and follow the recommended dose and duration. To help minimize irritation, you should take ibuprofen with meals.

I know for a fact if you take tylenol for pain reducer it can cause a lot of problems to your liver, your liver can grow soft and mess up.
So DON'T DRINK THEN USE TYLENOL! Even if you have a bad ass hang over, just drink lots of water to reduce the headache.
Water helps flush it out.
Or drink water and take a nap.

For a great hangover cure -- green tea (iced is better), lots of water, and potassium rich foods to restore electrolyte balance (be aware that frozen vegetables are blanched first, and have no potassium and are lacking many other nutrients). So don't go for the Green Giant if you have a hangover.

420 is iffy... It tends to dilate blood vessels, which can make your head throb more. Sometimes it makes me feel better, but take it easy. It can cure the nausea, but a hearty 420-cough can make you puke your guts out.

But yes -- never take Aspirin, Tylenol or Advil if you have a hangover. With all of that alcohol you had the night before, all of those drugs will either shred your stomach or your liver. I know people that pop Tylenol after a long night of drinking, with the idea that it will prevent a hangover. No -- it will just make it harder for your liver to clean up the mess.

I pretty much stay away from most of those OTC drugs. They are ineffective and harmful. Tylenol, Aspirin, Advil have never cured a headache for me.

Caffeine is also great for hangovers and headaches. Many OTC pain relievers (like Excedrin) contain caffeine specifically because it is so good with pain and headaches. Migraine sufferers often consume caffeine when they feel a migraine coming on.

Basically, the throbbing head from a hangover is due to enlargement of blood vessels in your head. Caffeine will shrink those quick-fast and make you feel better, but be aware, it will have a diuretic effect.

No! No! No! It says on the label. Ibuprofen is harsh on the stomach and with booze it will make it worse. It's OK if you only drink 2 drinks per day.

When I was younger and first started running, I had some serious knee pains. I took Advil and drank 4-6 beers a day, and I took a dump and it was all bloody. The combo of booze and Ibuprofen can cause stomach bleeding.

Tylenol is also a bad mix. So is Asprin. My advice for good pain relief that will work well with alcohol -- 420! Eat a cookie if you don't like smoking.

Some people find that drinking Smart Water helps.

By the way, Excedrin has both the active ingredients from Tylenol and aspirin in it. So you can get a double whammy post drinking.

Alcohol could increase the risk GI irritation and bleeding as well. For optimum precaution when taking Ibuprofen, avoid alcoholic drinks - that would be the best choice. Consuming 3 alcoholic beverages/day may increase the risk of GI bleeding. Ibuprofen prevents the body from getting rid of water and salt so indeed it is already a "burden" not only to the liver but kidneys as well.

Remember that it's not just ibuprofen, but also naproxen, diclofenac, ketorolac etc. In other words, the NSAIDs.

Yup! Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories will tear up your gut; if you want to do it faster, just add alcohol to the mix.

Been there, done that.
