"I saved someone's life tonight"

I was at a friend's house, we were eating and watching tv. She has a habit of talking while she eats, which I give her shit about. She was eating in the kitchen while doing stuff, while I was eating near the TV. She calmly walked over to me with that universal choking sign of her hands on her neck. She was so calm that I looked up at her, thinking she was messing around. After a couple seconds, I asked her if she was choking, she nodded yes, so I stood up, turned her around, gave her about 4-5 heimlichs, then she gurgled and rushed to the kitchen to spit her food out and started drinking water. The whole thing took about 15 seconds.

After about 5 minutes where we figured out how she choked, we then joked about it, then she tried to eat more but was a little shaken, then we watched tv and surfed the net and talked until her bf got home.

The whole thing was surreal. It was calm, quiet, matter of fact, with no panicking on anyone's part. It was over in a flash, with no drama, no heroics. It was the first time she ever choked on food, and the first time I ever used the heimlich to help someone. As i was doing it, I kept thinking I wasn't doing it aggressively enough, but it worked like magic.

Maybe it helped that she was a health care worker, and I that have required annual first responder certs from work.

I've never saved anyone's life directly before. Indirectly, perhaps, but nothing so immediate and exigent. It feels like a euphoric high. It was about 4 hours ago, and while I'm tired, I'm wide awake. I'm not bragging, there's nothing to brag about. I just felt like sharing.

Great story. You deserve an award. Were you afraid of doing that procedure ? Was she initially unable to talk ? What food was she eating which caused this ? Was this her first time of choking ? Does she eat fast or just not chew well or talk while eating ? Have you ever done this before ? Why were you so calm ?

Thanks, but no award necessary. Like I said, I didn't feel heroic or like "a lifesaver." No, I wasn't afraid at all. That's the weird part. It was so routine, as if we were just practicing. I've known her for 15 years, so that part was easy. She couldn't talk. i wouldn't have heimliched her if she could still talk. She said she was making those "crowing" sounds -- I call it squeaking sounds-- but I didn't hear it. She was eating mexican chile rojo, like a spicy pork stew, but it wasn't a chunk of meat she choked on...it seemed to be some combo of potato and something thick and saucy. Like I said, she said it was her first time choking, and she's in her 50s. She doesn't chew well...she typically talks and breathes while she eats. Like I said, I'd never done it before on a live choking person. Why was I so calm? Don't know, but I'm not an excitable type in general. And neither is she. What surprised me wasn't my calm, but HER calm. I always imagined a choking person starting to panic. But she was in her own home, and she knew me well, and like I said, she's accustomed to occasional medical emergencies in her work.

Oralio,
Great story. I use to teach first aide and cpr while i was in uncle sam's canoe club. While teaching for the red cross we had to stop using the term Hiemlich due to copyright laws they were going to sue over the use of that phase. So it now taught as abdominal thrusts. Good job on what you did and I know your friend appreciates you very much. Just thought I'd share the the update in terminology.

If nice guys finish last I guess I'm bringing up the rear.

It seemed life changing for a couple of days. I've pretty much forgotten it, probably because it was so oddly matter of fact. Nothing like on TV or the movies.

That happened to me in the UK. Car going about 35 mph missed me by a split second when my buddy pulled me back. You have to look in the opposite direction in UK, and it's surprisingly hard to get the hang of that.

After a softball game many moons ago, we were eating pizza and drinking beers(the best part of playing softball) and one of my teammates gave the "I'm choking sign" and was turning slightly blue. I got behind him, checked for his xiphoid and gave him a squeeze. A projectile of pizza flew across the table, and we able to continue our revelry. Many people who start choking will go into the restroom so as not to cause a commotion, not a good thing to do...

Kudo to you, Oralio! It's true that a lot of people who died due to choking died in the bathroom. instead of letting others know they're choking, they went straight to the bathroom. Good thing, you were there for her. you saved a life....you should be getting a medal.
If a police officer did that, he would get a medal, award and a dinner reception for it...and maybe a free pussy, too.

   Good Job!

Here is a link for Choking Rescue Procedure from WebMD. Very simple. Anyone should be able to do it.

http://firstaid.webmd.com/tc/choking-rescue-procedure-heimlich-maneuver-overview

Everyone should be familiar with it. You never know when the info may be needed.

So very true. I've known the technique for maybe 30 years, never used it once, and when I finally did use it, it was the furthest thing on my mind.

   Thanks for the link.

A couple questions:

1. How important, if at all, is hands-on training?

2. After confirming that the vic is indeed not breathing, is the next step to begin the Heimlich immediately or call 911? I can see good reasons for either approach.
