"Sleep deprivation and ginseng side effects"

LAST EDITED ON 19-Jun-10 AT 10:07 AM (PST)

This has happened two times now: I work really late for a couple of days and get very little sleep each night, then I schedule an appointment with an RA in the afternoon between meetings. And around an hour or two before I go, I take some ginseng (in pill form) because I've found them extremely effective in preventing me from falling asleep at the wheel, and off I go to the session.

Unfortunately, at those two session I had a hard time reaching my O, and end up not finishing.

Is this a side effect of lack of sleep? Of taking ginseng? Of both? Any remedies that still helps me from falling asleep at the wheel (unfortunately this is a major problem for me)?

(Editing to say that I'm not currently taking any medication of any kind at this time.)

Thanks for any inputs.

I'd blame sleep dep first and foremost.

I've taken ginseng for some time, and I'm not aware of any performance related issues, but I can't say I could rule it out either.

One thing I definitely believe helps beforehand -- maca, zinc, arginine, at the same time. All can be found in powdered or supplement form. And I do gingko for good measure, tho not convinced it helps.

I have a theory, unproven of course, that blood thinners also can contribute to performance issues. Therefore, I try to avoid aspirin/ibuprofen beforehand.

Then there's caffeine. For me, a LITTLE caffeine can help, but more than a cup of coffee or more than 50 mg of caffeine supplement seem to hurt more than help.

Thanks for your pointers, and for clarity, I meant that I could get it going, but couldn't manage to cross the finish line - felt like I was "just short of reaching it", if that makes sense.

Again, thanks for your input, and I hope I could get an answer before this situation hits me again in the future...

As long as your good at DATY don't worry about the rest. Oh by the way Ambien works great if you can't sleep...
