Yes, but male pattern baldness also requires testosterone to express the gene. Hence, even with a positive family history of MPB, a male can have a full head of hair if his testicles are removed before puberty.

Although a number of genetic alterations have been implicated in the development of male pattern baldness, much of the variations result from mutations in the androgen receptor [AR] (X-linked) which increase the activity of androgen receptors in the scalp. Other genes than the AR are also implicated.

This sensitivity forms in part the basis of developing drugs which interfere with 5-alpha-reductase (such as finasteride, which inhibits the predominant type 2 isoform) have been approved by the FDA as treatments for hair loss as they block testosterone activation (conversion to dihydrotestosterone) in the scalp.
