Air blow hand dryer manufacturers claim that they decrease the chance of spreading disease because they are much more sanitary than paper or cloth towels. On the surface, this is true.
However, given that many people do not wash their hands after using the toilet, there is another perspective.
It is very common, these days, for people who do wash their hands, to use the paper towel to open the door to exit the restroom, providing some insulation from the germs that were left on the handle by prior patrons.
But, restrooms with air blowers typically do not have paper towels, so you have to use your bare hand to open the door to exit.
So, what good is washing your hands if you have to touch the door handle where undoubtedly countless patrons before you, many of whom did not wash their hands, have touched it.

I'd worry more about the bacteria and other unmentionables on the door handle than whatever might be on the dryer. Even if you use the dryers to dry your hands, you should still use a paper towel to open the door out of the restroom. You can't know for sure if anyone else has done their business and washed their hands. Better to be safe than sorry. If a bathroom does not have paper towels, I use a wad of toilet paper and toss it in the trash on the way out. Anything else is just unsafe.
