"Q: About Michael Douglas and correlation to the hobby"

He was d/x with throat cancer.
Ridiculous as it may seem, many mongers out there started theorizing about how he got it.
(totally dismissing what he said himself)
The most underground talk about it right now is that MAYBE he contracted it thru repetitive exposure to DATY on many women(past and or present, including his current wife)

Michael Douglas Discusses His Cancer on ‘Late Show’
Compiled by Dave Itzkoff
Published: September 1, 2010

Michael Douglas said in an interview with David Letterman on Tuesday evening that he had started treatment for Stage 4 throat cancer, and offered cautious optimism that he would recover from it. Appearing on Mr. Letterman’s “Late Show” on CBS to promote his coming film, “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” Mr. Douglas, above left with Mr. Letterman, said he was given the diagnosis earlier in the summer after seeing several doctors for a nagging sore throat. Asked by Mr. Letterman about the severity of his condition — a Stage 4 cancer is defined as one that has spread to other parts of the body —
Mr. Douglas replied: “The big thing you’re always worried about is it spreading, so I am head and neck. I am above the neck, so nothing’s gone down, and the expectations are good.” Mr. Douglas, 65, said he had completed the first week of an eight-week chemotherapy regimen. When asked by Mr. Letterman if he smoked, Mr. Douglas said he smoked and drank, adding, “This particular type of cancer is caused by alcohol and drinking.” When asked about his chances for recovery, Mr. Douglas replied: “The percentages are very good. I would hate to say, but right now it looks like it should be 80 percent, and with certain hospitals and everything, it does improve.”

I didn't have time to listen to the entire video, but I know enough about this to say it's true.

I have a very close person in my life who is recovering from throat cancer much like Michael Douglas and George Karl.

90% of those who have this type of cancer are smokers and drinkers... neither of which apply to the close person in my life. However, he did test positive for HPV, and was told by one of the top cancer treatment centers in the U.S., that HPV is a huge factor as well. In addition it's something you can have for decades before it manifests itself in terms of cancer. In his case, he tested positive for HPV, but his wife is negative. So he contracted it either before he married her or from someone he had on the side (possible.)

Here's the bugger about it though... if you test positive for HPV, then it actually makes the cancer treatment more likely to be successful. So it is not only a factor in getting this sort of throat cancer, but it is also advantageous to have because it is more curable.

If true then everybody relax...got the ure right here. First you fly to Mexico, check into a clinic. Then the medical staff takes apricot pits, crushes/grinds them and makes an extract. After running through a pot distillery several times, the liquid is filtered through charcoal. After runing through a centrifuge, the potion is now ready for injection. Never mind that the FDA has repeatedly refused to approve this for cancer treatment since the 60's.

Hochaser is talking about "laetrile," also known as amygdalin. Laetrile was one of the first drugs tried for chemotherapy (we're talking 1900 here). It was a failure. Nevertheless, a few quacks tried to revive interest in laetrile around 1950, and a few true-believers in laetrile are still around today.

Why are some people so determined to believe the laetrile works? It's part of a larger narrative. Some people believe that pharmaceutical companies and the FDA are conspiring to keep a useful, unpatentable cancer drug off the market. For-profit pharmaceutical companies are indeed shrewd and heartless, have been known to gain undue influence at the FDA (especially during Republican administrations), and deserve their share of criticism. But laetrile is not a legitimate part of that story. It's bunk.

fighting the forces of evil since 1952...

As I seem to recall, Steve McQueen went to Mexico to get this supposed treatment.

It didn't work and he died of cancer.

Simplicity Is The Key Note To A Happy
Life.

I didn't watch the entire video as I know what he has throat cancer, etc. I would rather live ten years less and have a blast then ten years longer and not enjoy life.

Everything causes something.... Drinking out of plastic bottles causes cancer.

My niece like I once mentioned on the boards has Cancer and she is 19.

You just don't know what's going to happen and when.

I wish him well.

I say "who cares?"

They guy has throat cancer. He's always had a gravelly voice. He smoked for years, right? He spent much of his life giving his voice a workout. Personally, I'm saddened because I've been watching him since Streets of SF, one of the best cop shows in TV history which still holds up. I'm at a loss to think of a Michael Douglas film where he didn't put in an excellent performance. Not to mention, he got an oscar as producer for best film CUCKOO'S NEST ..AND an oscar for best actor for WALL STREET.

This is one of those rumors that wouldn't waste space without an internet.

Be the change
