"Day 6 a day of rest: reflect on Thailand"

Skip this if all you care about are the sexual exploits...

I’m stuck at the airport because my Cab driver was so late picking me up. So I’ve been thinking a lot about Thai culture and attitude. I sympathize with these women who choose this profession, but one thing I know is that most of them are not forced into doing this. It is means to improve their financial independence, help their families, enjoy a little freedom, and let’s face it have a little fun at times. I’ve tried really hard to get to know each girl I have been with. First of all I don’t want to spend even a short time with a head case, so a quick assessment is necessary before I spend time and money with a ying. First off can she speak a little English. Second does she have a sense of humor. Third is she attractive. After I do my brief interview, a lot is based on gut instinct as well, and make the decision to spend time with her I explore with more questions about where they are from, where they currently live and with whom. I ask about their families and upbringing. I’m very interested in what makes up these women. Although you pay for their company the experience is not one of prostitute and John in the way it is in other parts of the world. From what I have experienced so far, generally these girls seem very happy and at peace with themselves, they take care of themselves, they speak at least two languages perhaps more, they are curious and generally have very good manners. They are pristine in their hygiene and take pride in looking and smelling good. So, why are they so different than sex workers from other parts of the world? Of the five ladies I’ve been with so far if I would definitely date at least three of them. I have a theory on how this phenomenon has occurred. There are some elements when all combined together make the perfect environment for creating these special ladies.

O.K. here it goes; take a country that has a huge population poor people, many of them beautiful women. Not a lot of opportunities to move up in the world especially if you are female. Primarily raised in a patriarchal society to be subservient. A very poor educational system. Many single mothers who want and need to provide for their children. A religion that doesn’t base itself on good and evil and doesn’t condemn people because they choose to live a life not sanctioned by its belief. A government who knows its tourist trade would suffer if it cracked down on this type of hospitality. All these factors have made it a viable choice for woman from Thailand. Of course they don’t go parading it around the neighborhood or brag to family members, but if one is discreet she can really supplement her income and contribute to the larger family, which they all do.

Skin phenomenon: A common topic that has come up amongst each and every Ying I have been with so far has to with the fact they all think their skin is far too dark. Just as in the states when young girls are assaulted with images of Kate Moss style models and their ultra thin appearance. In Southeast Asia ultimate beauty is actualized when a woman has a perfectly pale complexion. It is all over the media and advertising from magazine and TV commercials to newscasters and movie stars, all the woman and for that matter the men all share a common attribute of a pale almost white complexion. So all these stunning woman with their beautiful tan skin avoid the sun at all cost. One asked me not to go into the sun because she prefers her Farrang white. Well I know I look and feel much better with a little color in my skin. Because yings work into the night they try to sleep through the intense midday sun while avoiding any contact with the dreaded rays. I blame the Japanese for their ideal of beauty and the imperialistic attitude. Don’t get me wrong I love Japanese culture and people just an observation.

Random thought:
Protection is a must when you hobby like this. Always insist.

I love this country. In terms of prostitution, I wish other countries would follow this model and we'd probably would have world peace...haha

Pattaya has men from so many different countries and we all could care less, as long as there is still 10 yings each for us to choose from...

I like Thai women of all types, tanned or not. I don't discriminate, except that I like my beer cold and my p_ h_.

Man, I almost got BB-RCG last night and I said, "wait a second!!!", pushed her aside, grabbed my condom, and went full speed ahead...

It's not just the Japanese who idealize fair skin as the standard for beauty. The Chinese and Koreans are just as guilty of it. In fact, the Chinese are probably the worst influence because in China, there is a wide range of skin pigmentation creating stratification by skin shade. The darker skinned population are classified into a lower working class group by nature of their exposure to the sun during outdoor labor work.

Due to a more homogenous racial mix and climate considerations, the skin color of the people of Korea and Japan are more homogeneous. So for them, fair skin is simply a preference (by nature of commonality with themselves) whereas in China, skin shade discrimination is commonplace as it more clearly denotes socio-economic stature.

I would contend that the Thai people's preference for lighter skin didn't simply trickle down from China, Korea, or Japan. I think that they have a similar reasoning as the Chinese in that it is a means to determine a person's socio-economic background (fairly or not). Of course, this preference is exacerbated since the "wealthy" sex tourists from Japan, China, and Korea share the same preference.

I think you pretty much got the analysis right. Certainly there is a bias against darker skinned people throughout Asia. It's funny, there are so many HK movies where people make subtle remarks or jokes at actor Lau Ching Wan (one of the great HK actors) because of his dark skin.

Certainly one can see the preferebce differences just from where the working girls are. It is almost non-existent lighter-skinned girls in Nana and Patpong except for the the Thaniya street where the Japanese places are. On the other hand, there are very few darker skinned girls in the Ratchadipsek places (well at least the ones I've seen) which is where most of the Asian homies hang out.

I've always thought that we Filipinos were the ultimate in Asia as far as lighter-skin prejudices were concerened. It's interesting to know that it seems to be just as bad around Asia, although maybe for different reasons.

In the Philippines, the preference for lighter skin has commonly been attributed to colonial mentality and the influence of Western media. Being first a Spanish colony and then a US commonwealth, Filipinos associate having white skin and Caucasian features with the highest standard of beauty, probably because of the very same socio-economic factors that you mentioned.

On the second tier are the Chinese "mestizas" or "Chinitas" who are a mix of the Chinese and Malay features, and have a light yellow skin tone -- these are the more common "beauties" around as there aren't really too many Filipinos who have Caucasian features. Being good businessmen, your average Chinese-descended Filipino is richer than your average Filipino, and in fact most middle class and up Filipinos invariably have Chinese blood in them.

I thought only Filipinos had this bias, because of its unique colonial past. But if it's really everywhere around Asia, then maybe there it really is nothing more than how lighter skin shows you come from a family that doesn't have to work out in the sun.

Same is true for Vietnam. The Women all wear large hats and have stockings covering their arms as they ride their scooters through the streets. To be tan is the sign of being a peasent.

This discussion shows that the skin tone prejudice is worldwide as it is here in the states, south of the border in Tijuana or on the other side of the world in asia.

In many places around the world, the lighter skinned people are considered more attractive. In Italy, the Northern Italians look down on the darker skinned Southern Italians. They have a saying in Northern Italy, that "South of Rome is Africa".

To add my two cents, and go off on a tangent:

There is stratification w.r.t. physical attributes of men as well. The beergut/buddha belly is a sign of success. A lean, muscular physique means the man works with his body, therefore lower on the totem pole.

And I certainly wont forget the derision I got from a newly-hired friend upcountry, who upon noticing that my hands (palms) were calloused, remarked, with a sneer, "Oh, you workman???". [No, the callouses were not from excessive onanism ]

Clothing, brandnames, haircut, number of cellphones, eyeglasses,... are another tangent I will leave for others.
