"Advice: SEA Rookie Visiting in March"

I need a little help from the brothers of RB. I will make my first trip to SEA on business in March but will take a week off to have some fun. My itinerary is not final but it looks like I will visit Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. Mostly close to large cities and university research centers. My plan is to have a week in Thailand to relax. While on business I probably will not have much time to hobby but I will try to have some fun in the evening.

I've been searching the threads but still have a few questions. They are the following:
Out of the countries I will visit would most of you say that Thailand is the country to spend my free week?

What are the recommended hotels in Thailand? Preferably ones that are clean, not too expensive, close to the action (Pattaya) and girl friendly.

What are some of the other things to do in Thailand besides hobby?

Can you still have suits and shirts custom made in Singapore at a reasonable price?

Will there be in RB brothers in Thailand around the second week of March? Maybe we can meet up and have a beer.

Sorry for all the questions but I want to be prepared and have a great time. Any advice and tips will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

NYC

Pattaya is probably best bang for the buck. Depending on your time in Singapore, you might want to take an extra day or so to just 'hang out'.

What are the recommended hotels in Thailand? Preferably ones that are clean, not too expensive, close to the action (Pattaya) and girl friendly.

Too vague. Describe the type of accommodation in which you are most comfortable then figure it out. Regardless of room category, always book for double occupancy if the hotel doesn't mention being guest friendly. If you've got points, stay at the Marriott. If not, then there are several places ranging from guesthouses to 4 star as well as condo options.
--At the low end are many guesthouses and rooms above bars. Metro, Rockhouse, 3Som and Irish Rovers are frequently mentioned In this category.
--If going high on the hog, you also have the Hard Rock. (*Keep in mind that HRH is inconsistent on guest policy. Always check ahead.
--PBR seems to be real popular right now
--so are the LK properties (LK Metro, LK Renaissance). The problem with the LKs is that they aren't near walking street. http://www.lkpattaya.com/
--You may also want to check out Tim Boutique. http://www.timboutiquehotel.com/
--Secrets is on Walking Street http://www.secretspattaya.com/ (**keep in mind that Walking Street is noisy late at night)
--Amari Nova is fairly popular http://www.amari.com/NOVASUITES/
--Areca Lodge has been very popular, but new construction noise nearby. http://www.arecalodge.com/
--Residence Garden is pretty close as well and you get pretty good value with FLB discount mentioned on ptalk. http://www.theresidencegarden.com/
--I haven't stayed at the Galaxy Suites but it looks pretty nice.
--A buddy of mine swears by the Eastiny Chain http://www.eastinypattaya.com/
--I'd also check with dancewatcher as March is beginning of low season and he might have a condo at a pretty decent rate. Again for a first timer I'd stay in town and that probably means View Talay "6".

Since it's your first trip, this list should be sufficient. As you repeat you may want to stay in Jomtien on future visits.

**Do a search on here and check out some of the other LOS boards as they typically have reviews of hotels. When booking, see if your hotel shows vacancies on latestays.com as they typically offer pretty decent rates.

If I were to re-do my first trip . . .
...on a budget, I'd stay at Secrets.
...if I budget like at home, I'd stay at Tim Boutique or LK Metro.
...or I'd use my points at stay at Marriott.
...newbie with large bankroll, Hard Rock. (as it is, you might want to just visit Hard Rock for the pool party--I think it's on Thursdays).

---

What are some of the other things to do in Thailand besides hobby?

Lots of tourist places such as temples, Big Buddha on the hill, elephant sanctuary, The Nong Nooch botanical garden, Cart Driving, Gun range, Golf, Water Park, eat, charter a boat, parasail, shop, massage, disco, blues club, cooking class, movies, bowling, hobby, snorkel(**not in Pattaya--water is too bad). You can also play pool almost anywhere and karaoke. I didn't mention drinking as that goes without saying.

Also check out Bangkok.

---

Can you still have suits and shirts custom made in Singapore at a reasonable price?

Define reasonable price--Yes, Elkay <sp> is popular and there are several other tailors. I'd assume your choice may depend on your location (Orchard, SunTec, Marina, etc.) Ask your colleagues and make sure you get at least 3 fittings during construction.

---

Will there be in RB brothers in Thailand around the second week of March? Maybe we can meet up and have a beer.

You'll miss me by a week, but you should find a few as several live there. Just go to FLB Bar. Also do a pub crawl.

---

You didn't ask, but another 2 cents

One
I don't know when Songkran is, but you don't want to stay in Pattaya all week if the week you are planning to visit coincides with Songkran (aka Thai New Year aka water festival)

Two

That's enough for now. Have fun.

   >Can you still have suits and shirts custom made in Singapore at a reasonable price?

depends on what you mean by reasonable, I had great suits made in BKK, same quality as what I got in HK. I got some quotes in Singapore but didn't think they were reasonable.

There are always people you can grab a beer with in Thailand, I've never had trouble meeting some random brit/oz to have a beer with. Just be friendly and willing to buy a round.

>What are some of the other things to do in Thailand besides hobby?

What are you looking for ? you can take muay thai class, a cooking class or go join a Buddhist colony for a week. Plus lots of diving, eating,...

NYC, did you finalize your plans? What's your agenda for Malaysia? There was an excellent report on KL not to long ago but if you need additional advise post up. Been two all four of the places that you mentioned. My last trip in December was to SG, KL, and then AC/Manila.

Peace
