"Massive Sting in Singapore"

   http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_481191.html

SOME 170 people were arrested Saturday morning in a massive 14-hour operation at Geylang, led by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The operation involved over 200 officers from the Home Team and kicked off Friday afternoon, said the Singapore Police Force in a statement.

The people were caught for a host of criminal offences including illegal gambling activities, secret society involvement, possession of an offensive weapon, immigration offences, peddling contraband cigarettes, vice-related activities, trafficking, possession and consumption of controlled drugs.

The operation also led to the capture of those who were wanted for other offences.

The arrests were made at various locations including hotels, at back lanes, lodging houses and also along the road, between Geylang Lorongs 4 to 24.

SAC Ng Boon Gay, Director of CID, praised the officers involved for carrying out a well-coordinated and successful operation. He expressed his appreciation to all agencies for their strong support.

He added, 'We will not tolerate such criminal activities. The agencies will continue to work together and conduct such regular enforcement actions. There is no safe haven for criminals on our streets.'

Investigations against those arrested are ongoing.

I don't see any problem here -- if anything, it makes the area safer, and is in keeping with local Singapore L.E. tradition!

The area is/was generally pretty safe, common sense rules meaning you don't flash your cash in a drunken state and picking up fights. But the shut down and stings as well as the pressure from the local MP has essentially wiped out the street action along all the lorongs. Now only the established red-lanterned houses as well online ones will rule meaning prices will invariably go up. There are few massage parlors in the area but we might see more foot reflexology places pop up ala HK.

Actually, prices have been dropping on-line, probably due to more availability- used to be US$100 for a two hour session, typically has now dropped to ~$70 for many Thai girls.

Street scene had essentially disappeared prior to this raid, which seemed to be mostly focused on gambling and immigration violations, not prostitution (which is of course legal in Geylang anyway)...

FP - are you referring to 1 pop or 2 pop sessions? I was referring to 2 pops. I'm quoting S$ so yeah, it's around US$65/pop.

Also, to clarify on FP's post - prostitution is legal only in the red lantern houses and not the street walkers as most are freelancers either on tourists visa or other visas that precludes them from working as such.

This can not be good for the local hobby:

http://www.razor.tv/site/servlet/segment/main/news/43020.html

36-year-old Chinese national Ms Lin travelled here from China to share her story so that Madam Zhang Xiang Yun could help speak up for her and other victims.

Ms Lin first came to Singapore in 2002 and met a man who forced her to serve customers in Malaysia for 2 years and 9 months.
