"Sending money to a friend in Thailand"

LAST EDITED ON 01-Feb-10 AT 11:41 AM (PST)

I would like to send a small amount of money to a friend in Thailand: small is a few thousand baht.

Suggestions about low-cost ways to send money to Thailand will be appreciated.

Please note that, although my friend is female, she is a civilian, not a working girl, she is not maintaining a stable of farang abroad sending her money to not work in a bar, she does not live in Pattaya, and the funds I want to send are for her to obtain a passport so we can travel together outside Thailand (our trips so far have all been within Thailand).

A Thai passport only costs 1000 baht according to the internet, but some extra funds are needed to travel to the nearest passport office (Songkla in this case).

The most obvious method for her to obtain a few thousand baht would be from her bank account or cookie jar (Thai girls typically are broke) or to borrow from a friend or colleague (her Thai-girl friends will typically also be broke). If I had a friend I trusted in Thailand I would ask, but my ex-pat buddies are all in the States at the moment.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

I would never send a single baht (pisos are a different story LOL).

Western union.com is easiest, and if the amount is small (say 3000Baht) the fees are tolerable. For larger amounts, other remittance services are cheaper (I know them for the PI, NOT for LOS). www.xoom.com is cheaper than WU.

Surfer, xoom apparently agrees with you as they send money to PI but not to Thailand.

Maybe this has something to do with Filipinas leaning on their farang boyfriends to support them, while Thai girls don't even ask (um, good luck).

Websites like iKobo charge about $20 for a first transfer, and, since 1000 THB is only about $30, this is hardly cost effective. I assume WU is worse, I'll find out.

Since this is a one-fer (I have never sent my friend money, even though we have taken several trips together, of course I do compensate for her time when we are together) I'll encourage her to borrow the 1000 baht (she only makes 6000 baht per month, so this is not a small sum) so she will have her passport in hand when we head south to Malaysia together next month.

Meanwhile, I'll look into Paypal and look forward to other suggestions.

W/U will cost you $12.00 to transfer up to $500.00. They will ding on the other end on the foreign exchange rate. So always sent dollers and let your friend or friends do the currency exchange at a better rate.

Roger writes Thai pretty darn well and the girl he wants to get money to is not in Pattaya, but those issues aside, helping the lovely Tik in her new business is something I would encourage ALL RBers to consider.

Now who taught her Japanese and Korean?

Every now and then I send money to my offshore betting operation. I use Money Gram, they are located at Lucky Supermarkets, pretty simple and convenient, cost $10 for around $500, then I go shopping.

   Roger,

Check with your bank, you might get "free" wire transfers to her account...be careful if your wife has access to your bank records. Pay pal maybe another option if you send money often. WU screws you on the exchange rate.

Just a warning, don't be fooled by the low cost of the transfer, they can burn you with a crappy exchange rate. So figure it all ways and go with the better deal.

I seem to recall there was a flower/gift service that would send flowers/gifts and money to Thai girls...I forget the name...something like "mythaigirl.com" or "mythaibargirl.com" But they would hand deliver her cash and flowers or whatever...

Thanks all for your constructive suggestions about how to send money to a girl in Thailand. The responses were informative and useful.

I would particularly like to note that a member of this board who has not always been a fan of mine privately and generously offered to arrange the transfer through his personal bank account.

I practiced my Thai-language conversation skills with my Thai-language tutor yesterday, in advance of my phone call to my girl in Thailand yesterday evening. I had "bank account" and "bank transfer" and "passport office" and lots of important words ready in Thai (I speak Thai with my girl).

I expected her to say "mai mii sa-dtaang" which roughly translates as "I'm flat broke." To my considerable surprise, she said she has 1000 baht and will get her passport without my immediate financial assistance. Of course I'll pay her back next month when I see her. Now we'll see if she can hold onto her 1000 baht long enough to actually get her passport.

Thanks again all, Roger

The offer was generous as I said, and would certainly work just fine. I have privately thanked the RB member for his offer, and I would have accepted it had there been a need to do so following last night's conversation with TGF.

The point of my update was that TGF does not need a money transfusion to obtain her passport, thus no need to send her money at this time....to my considerable surprise. Maybe she is finally beginning to grow up...or maybe not...do Thai girls ever grow up?

It is unlikely that there will be a next time, as I do not send money to Thai girls, preferring to be generous when we are together. The present case is an exception, as she needs the passport to accompany me to Malaysia....this will be her first trip outside Thailand....and....based on prior travel experience together...we should have a good time.

btw, you (FH) have met this girl, we had dinner together at Lan Na Thai on soi 38 a year or two ago.

For the rest of you, Lan Na Thai is a very lovely restaurant in an old teak house, expensive but very pretty.

i've met the rb member who made the offer too (though i didn't know that until he inboxed me about my post).

i'm sure he was sincere and was only offering to do you a favor -- he was handing out 1k baht notes to thais for christmas, so i doubt he's going to use you to intercept 1k baht meant for a thai woman.

but it was still fun for me to make the smart-ass comment.

FH, honesty and trust were never in question....as far as I know we RB brothers help each other out....never heard of a scam among us....and in fact I too have met the RB member in question. I have already thanked him for his kind offer to help.

I am just pleased that TGF says she actually had 1000 baht to obtain her passport....so I didn't need anyone's assistance in getting the money to her if advance of seeing her.

Your smart-ass comments are always welcome, although I am getting a bit tired of your contribution to over-use of "whore." Which of course is your point anyway.

Roger, FH may be wanting to de-sensitize us to the word whore but for some reason the more I hear it the more I want to hear it! His allergen immunotherepy isn't working, at least for me.......I guess he is attempting to treat the wrong ailment as its an addiction for most of us. Hmmm, but maybe for some on this board it is an "allergy" so maybe he has a chance.

Wait a minute, did I see that you used the word "whore"!

Glad your TG came through on her own. Have a grand time in Malaysia and keep treating her good when you see her.

it's not easy to work it into every post, thus the signature.

it's not a word i'd commonly use -- except as slang in situations where few would consider it offensive and in those cases, rarely am i using it accurately.

the issue is that those who are bothered by its use are so damned righteous about others not using it, even when used entirely accurately.

a word used accurately doesn't merit complaints. a word is a word. though if it weren't for everybody complaining, i'd use hooker or prostitute instead of whore. and if the word weren't being actively censored from usage in some RB forums, i wouldn't make a point of using it.

and as zingy mentioned, the stigma attached to the word is _increased_ by trying to prevent its use. i like what gays did with the word "queer." now it's totally acceptable to call a gay man a queer. no blood, no foul. of course, you have to resort to calling him a faggot if you actually intend to insult him... i guess every rose has its thorn.

Ah this discussion yet again. And so once again I will remind you all that WHORE is indeed a proper word. It is used in literature, including the bible and other works of fiction. It was, at one time I am told, used in the courts and laws as well. Women signed "contracts to whore" when they worked in brothels, and they were called whores, because well, that is what they were.

I have run this question by quite a few women, that is, "would you be more offended to be called a whore, a hooker a prostitute etc..." Most said they would be equally offended to be called any of those names. 1 did say she found whore slightly more derogatory. Almost all the women I ask say they would be offended only if it were intended as a direct insult, rather than an observation. That is, "YOU FUCKING WHORE!" yelled would be an insult vs "those shoes make you look like a whore..."

Oddly, almost ALL the women said they would be more insulted if a woman called them a whore as opposed to a man calling them a whore. Most found "kitty" (WTF? I typed C**T) and "bitch" to be among the most offensive insults.
1-2 women did say "how could I be offended if I was actually a whore? None of the women I have asked to this point have been whores. I think I'll ask Jeanie next time she blows me.

Some people object to my use of the word whore, others object to Surfer using LBFM. I personally find "provider," "RA" "Session" etc to be lame pussified and sanitized. Which is one of the many reasons I choose to use the words I do when talking about fucking whores.

Selling sex may be dehumanizing, degrading and exploitative, but the same could be said about buying sex. There is nothing holy in any of this, on either side. It is ridiculous to me that words are censored on a board that is dedicated to whoring and buying sex. We graphically discuss our sexual exploits but we can't use certain words...I typed c**t above and it was changed to "kitty" how pussified. (get it, kitty, pussified?)

I am a hard core punter in love with the game and I will make no apologies to anyone for my involvement in it, or how I express myself regarding it. The PC crowd can line up and make like whores and suck my dick.
